A couple of years ago we passed through this area of southwest Virginia as we traveled up 77 to 81 heading to New England from the Atlanta area. It is beautiful and we vowed to come back and explore. We selected "Reach the Heavens in Virginia" as we planned a last minute getaway for my husband's birthday. The owner was very patient and efficient in communicating with us as we navigated the online payment and contract procedures.
The cabin pictures and location described on the website are accurate. When you walk in the front door you can tell immediately the owners take pride in their cabin. The cabin is well maintained, clean, comfortable beds, and having a full washer/dryer on the main floor is a plus. We cooked our meals in each night and found the kitchen to be quite sufficient with plenty of pots, pans, flatware, glasses, and sharp knives. There is plenty of storage for items in the built in pantry!
While here is plenty of privacy and a feeling of being away from it all, you are only 10 minutes away from the Food City grocery in the town of Independence. We discovered Rixey's Store on one of our drives. They were very friendly and eager to share local history and secrets of getting around on the back roads. Also, the caretaker for the cabin is available if needed. Our second morning, as we were headed out for the day, the key became stuck in the front door lock. Something that can happen no matter where you are, but we fiddled and fiddled and had no luck removing the key. We called Chad, the caretaker, who came right over, was able to remove the key, oil and tighten the lock, and all was good.
In our short visit of 3 days, we explored north on Hwy 21 up to Wythefille and also on highways #52, #16, #58 as well as several interconnecting back roads. Lovely country. We would welcome a return visit to Reach the Heavens in Virginia!
