This was my second summer at An Tigin--I couldn't stay away, and I can't imagine a more perfect cottage. The location is ideal, especially the magical and ever-changing view of the water. The dramatic tides are fascinating to watch from the deck, and the view is mesmerizing whether in bright sunshine or wispy fog. The cottage is a quick drive from the swing bridge that leads onto Southport Island, with very easy access to other sites on Southport (like Oliver's restaurant or the general store) as well as the more bustling town of Boothbay Harbor back across the bridge. The garden and backyard are truly idyllic, stretching down to a tiny cove, with views out toward more distant islands.
My first summer there we used the kayak every day, kayaking out to Burnt Island (a lovely nearby island with a lighthouse) and around the coastline of Southport Island. That summer I was visiting with my parents, both in their 70s, and the cottage was perfect for them--very comfortable, a great homebase for day trips and a wonderful place to relax. This past summer I went to An Tigin with younger, more active friends, and it was perfect for our purposes as well! After a day of hiking, hours of kayaking and sailing, or swimming in the cool local waters, returning to the cottage was blissful, and we also made a point of balancing time at the cottage with all of that activity, since the cottage itself is so pleasant.
Finally, it also must be said that Brooke is an amazing landlady! The care she has taken in renovating this lovely cottage is also reflected in how good she is at making guests comfortable. She went above and beyond for us, turning on lights for us so we could easily find our way upon our late-night arrival from the Portland airport. The cottage itself is immaculate, with cozy bedrooms and plenty of indoor space for the occasional rainy day, and outdoor space for barbecuing and sunbathing.
Both summers it has been very hard to leave such a lovely place, and I hope to return soon...
