Photos and Description of the Harpers Ferry vacation house rental
3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, sleeps 6-9

This one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's, and renovated in 2004-2005. The house shares the building with a small boutique wine shop (Harpers Ferry Wine & Gourmet) and a family-style restaurant (Secret Six Tavern), which specializes in Traditional American cuisine. The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental actually spans both spaces (see photo)! The building was used during the civil war by both the Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour!

The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic views. The porch sits above the Secret Six Tavern's outdoor eating area, which due to the view, is a Harpers Ferry hot spot! The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains. After the leaves fall, there is also a view from the 1st floor of the Potomac River. There is a TV, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to new beds and living room furniture, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques.

The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers year-round views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon. The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families, three couples, or 6-9 friends! Each bedrooms has a TV and DVD player.

The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible.

Three couples shared this great residence for a long weekend. It was a perfect getaway. The location was outstanding -- walk or bike to the C&O Canal bike path or Appalachian trail. Lots of historical options in the area. Shopping. Plenty to do. The residence itself was fantastic - lots of space to spread out - big living area, fully equipped kitchen, nice deck with a view in the back. 3 very nice bedrooms. Couldn't have asked for more. Highly recommended.

What a find ! Sometimes you are not sure what you are getting based on photos and an owners' description. This was everything and more.We booked for 5 days and were fortunate that the house was available for an additional 2 days. Only a bit more than an hour from DC, an hour from Gettysburg and in the heart of Civil War History...not to mention on the Appalacian Trail and inside the Harpers Ferry Park. The house itself was more than you could ask for. Tons of room (we were 2 couples) ,spotlessly clean and all the amenities...even binoculars to bird watch and a bottle of wine upon arrival. We thought about going to a Washington Capitals hockey game. Not only did the owners help us secure tickets, unbeknownst to us they went to Washington, got the tickets and slipped them under our door.We were kept busy every day and returned to an awesome house in a spectacular historic setting. Don't let the fact that you are over a tavern be a concern. You hear a bit of noise if you listened but if you were on the "bedroom" floor you couldn't hear a thing. Also, the tavern was quite charmining.A number of places to dine within a 2 minute walk. Would highly recommend!!!!

Probably THE only place that you can rent in the historic district. Beautifully decorated and updated with the modern amenities. Easy walk to everything in Harpers Ferry and the bath towels are the greatest. It got cold when we stayed and the wood pellet fireplace was fantantic. Recommend this highly.

Just finished a weekend with friends at this beautiful house. It had everything we needed, was spacious, had a perfect porch looking at the mountains and Jill could not have been more helpful or friendlier. When we arrived, Jill and Rich had a pleasant note attached to a bottle of wine for us. It was a really nice touch and made us feel at home. We put the fireplace to use most of the weekend, which was crucial in the house.

I had a correspondence with Jill for over a month and she was able to answer all of my questions and to work with me on everything. The house, the location and the owners made this a memorable experience!

Thanks,

Misha

We (a few foreigners from all parts of the world) stayed at this home during MLK Weekend. It's a beautiful home with lots of space. The home is very convenient to the train (we traveled to Harpers Ferry via Marc Commuter train and back to Washington, DC via Amtrak) as well as to the lower town area (where all the action is for tourists and a good starting point for hiking trails). The fireplace/stove was wonderful for a dreary day.

We were in town and stayed only one night. The house is large and cozy and very very relaxing....very "mountain European-esk". The porch views are spectacular and rival the Hilltop House, which is closed now. It was very relaxing, charming and unforgettable. Our 8 year old son sat and watched the trains all evening and the next morning. We enjoyed our stay and would do it again. There are several restaurants around the house but we brought our own food and coffee. The kitchen is very large and nicely equipped. The pellet stove was wonderful.

A wonderful weekend experience. My husband and I traveled with our three children and fell in love with the area. The house is wonderful, warm, comfortable and relaxing. The view is fantastic. My youngest, age 3, enjoyed the trains as did we. The town is a lovely place to spend time. Easy hikes, nice shops and scary stories. The ghost tours are recommended by my family. The house itself is pleasant and the towels are wonderful.
