We bought Haven Homeplace in December of 1990 from the descendants of the original family that created the farm back in 1830. Scott was a successful model, actor and WNNNBC radio personality in New York City, and discovered the place on a visit back home. He jumped at the chance to own this little slice of heaven.

At first, there was not much here except potential. But slowly, together with Irma Hayward the spunky lady who sold us the farm, we pushed back the forests to reveal the old fields and the requisite New England stone walls.

In those early years here, the Haven family provided us with early 1900s photos of the farm – and we set out restoring the place to its original look (with modern updates like central air conditioning).

17 years after we bought it, we began to travel and while we were away, hosted a family from Cushing Academy for a week. They were wonderful and Haven made them so happy. It's then that we got 'the bug' to host travelers from around the world.

When guests are in residence at the farm, we live at an adjacent property. Either we or our caretaker are always available to meet, orient, answer questions and assist in making your stay a memorable and comfortable one.

Guests say that we are very detail-oriented, clean...and have terrific taste! And we do enjoy meeting people who come our way. You may view 5-star guest comments on every page of our website at www.HavenHomeplace.com.

John Rahaim purchased this farmhouse in 1990

Ashburnham is our hometown. Haven Homeplace didn't start out as a guest rental property. We made a dream come true for ourselves by renovating and 'TLC-ing' the farm and living there. The Haven family member that sold the farm to us actually participated in and applauded the restoration.

Although we have traveled the world from Rome to Bali, there is something special here that we now enjoy sharing with others.

It is just down the road from the world-famous college prep school, Cushing Academy. Luminaries such as the King of Bhutan, Nate Berkus, Bette Davis and others have graduated from its ivy clad tower.)

We did not choose Haven Homeplace. It chose us.

Where else could you see turkey and deer grazing on a verdant green lawn close by in the morning...and be shopping on glamorous Newbury Street in Boston that same afternoon?!

We're located in what we call 'The Heart of New England' in North Central MA near the cities of Gardner, Fitchburg & Leominster. Our area is just WNW of Greater Boston in the beautiful rolling hills beyond the coastal plain. (You can actually see the Boston skyline from some of the hilltops.)

Also nearby are The Winchendon School, Franklin Pierce University, Mt Wachusett Community College, the cities of Gardner, Fitchburg, Leominster, Devens, Westminster, Ashby, Princeton, Wachusett Mt. and arts mecca Peterborough & Mount Monadnock.

Peace. Charm. Nature. Renewal. Comfort.

Homeplace History & Guests: Elijah Haven Homeplace was built in 1830 – a gift from Elijah's parents, Jonas and Nancy Haven, who settled the 300 acres next door just after the Revolutionary War. One of their adopted daughters, Anna Dawn, was discovered on the doorstep early one morning in the late 1800s. They raised her as their own. In 1990, we purchased the farm from the descendants of the Havens (the first time it had been out of the their family in over 160 years). We completely and lovingly renovated and updated it. Some of our guests who find Haven Homeplace ideal are: – Cushing Academy Parents, Alumni and Prospective Students' Families – Relocating Doctors, Executives and other professionals – People with family in our area – Getaway Vacationers and Sightseers from around the world – Romantic Honeymoon/Engagement Cottage and Grounds We have hosted authors, actors, honeymoon couples, money fund managers, educators and many others – and we welcome you. Security, Phone, TV and Wi-Fi: The home is secured with ADT intrusion, smoke and fire protection. Comcast High Speed Wi-Fi is provided. Strong wireless phone signals for both Verizon and AT&T. Dish Network TV with local channels & DVR/Wi-Fi. Secluded Nature, Privacy and Comfort: Enjoy Mother Nature and the great outdoors. Play badminton or croquet on one of our lawns. Throw frisbees or scrimmage in the fields. Cross Country Skiing and Hiking through our fields, woods and miles of back roads is awesome for communing with nature, fresh air and exercise. Wachusett Mt. is just another few minutes away if Downhill Skiing or Snowboarding gives you a thrill. In Spring, Summer and Fall flocks of turkeys and their poults roam the grounds with the backdrop of a beautiful perennial wave garden, lilies and currants. Renew and recharge – or just retire after a hectic business day.

This cottage was exactly as described--private, cozy, charming and well equipped. The hosts were personable and couldn't have been more accommodating. We will definitely go again when we are in the area; would love to see the summer garden.

Delightful Little Cottage of Ashburnham

It was one of the most pleasant stays I and my family had ever experience at any accommodation while traveling abroad. The cottage is classically located in the traditional New England farm but fully furnished with modern amenities for the enjoyment and comfort of its guests. While we were there the kids enjoyed picking apples from the trees, playing in the field, and also excited watching those wild turkeys making their rounds near the cottage every afternoon. Many thanks to our hosts, John and Scott, for welcoming us to their lovely home and making our first visit to Haven Homeplace so wonderful.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Jeffery. You and your family were a joy to host. You enjoyed our farm to its fullest – and then not only left it spotless, but with a great vibe! It goes without saying that we look forward to hosting you and your wonderful family in the future whenever you come to Cushing Academy.

Magnificent home, hosts and location

Tired of hotels, this is the first time my wife and tried renting a house, and what a wonderful week-long experience this has been.

This circa 1830s farmhouse, actually a beautifully renovated cottage, located at the center of 100 acres of forests and meadows, is perfect for us. It is immaculate in its cleanliness, beautifully appointed with both comfortable and handsome furniture. The hosts are wonderful, engaging, helpful, and friendly. Everything we needed to spend the week was in place and available.

Turkeys wander through the meadows; woodchucks scurry to find their borrows; stories of deer and coyote. We watched from the many windowed kitchen and dining area.

The landscaping reflects care and a stylish flair. The many beautiful stone walls that outline the driveway and meadows are a reminder of New England's and this house's past.

Haven Home Place is less than a one hour drive from the Manchester airport and likely about 90 minutes from Boston.

If you are looking for a relaxing, magnificently appointed yet very comfortable home away, this is for you. An added benefit, if you love Robert Frost's poetry, you see his poems everywhere: birch trees, not yet bent; walls that make good neighbors; tufts of flowers. We would love to spend time here at other times of the year: fall with the magnificence of maple colors; seeing winter's white.

We shall return time and time again. We will never be satisfied in a hotel again.

The Elijah Haven Homeplace exceeded all our expectations. It is beyond charming, meticulously kept, immensely comfortable, and warm and cozy as could be. We were as comfortable here as we are in our own home - no, more! We really appreciated your attention to the little details, and your gracious, personalized service upon our arrival. Of course, having the whole place to ourselves - complete and utter privacy - made the experience that much more enjoyable. Thank you, John and Scott, for a truly wonderful weekend. We will be back!

My husband and I got married at the Cathedral of the Pines this past summer and we stayed at Haven Homeplace the night before our wedding. It was the perfect place to go to just relax before our big day. The owners John and Scott were wonderful to deal with and were so welcoming to us. They provided us with everything we needed to feel right at home. Thank you again!!

***** A haven of peace and serenity!

My husband and I spent several months this past winter at Haven Homeplace while we completed a complicated real estate deal and started a renovation on our home in this area. As the pictures attest, this home was such a treat to come back to every day. A safe haven in the storm of our lives. We felt like we walked in to a haven of peace and serenity. Every detail created a sense of warmth and welcome. We loved the big bookcase, the inspirational books at the side of each bed, the big mugs and the hot chocolate mix so thoughtfully placed in the kitchen. For our short time there, we moved in heart and soul. The grounds are private and amazing. I'm hoping to find a reason to create a stay in the summer so I can see it from that perspective! This home was a true find.

***** A piece of heaven on earth!

We honestly could not find one thing that you could change or add to make our experience a better one. Your home was perfect for us. Some of my favorite things were the rustic decor, the large square table in the kitchen, the lighting (the ability to dim it) and the ambiance that it gave to the whole place. The attention to detail was superb. Your art work and your book case added even more to the warmth of the space. We honestly felt right at home the minute we walked in as if we had been there before. Trey's favorite things were the windows and the sky lights, and Jake's was your wonderful grounds. He was out everyday exploring the land. He spent hours out back scraping snow off the pond in order to play pond hockey and took to the high hill where he sledded. Our whole family loved the turkeys and all the wildlife. We saw several deer and a huge fox one day. It seemed that every day we were greeted by some sort of wild life, so we really looked forward to those little gifts that were sent our way. The only negative thing that we have to say is that we are so sad that we couldn't stay longer.

Our family has been truly blessed to have found Haven Homeplace, and feel that a home speaks volumes about the kind of people who live in it. Warm, caring and inviting are the words that best fit. With that we feel we have made friends for life! We wish you the best now and throughout the New Year.
