About KC Christopher

Mitch and I moved from Colorado to the beautiful Finger Lakes region to begin another phase of our life together and to be closer to my parents as they are getting older. I grew up in the Buffalo area and Mitch came from the east coast originally, so this was a 'coming back to our roots' move.

After several years of searching in three different states, when we found the Finger Lakes we knew this was the place we had always dreamed of. Our love of water sports, lush green forests and a desire for the peaceful country life made Trumansburg an ideal choice. We found a wonderful historic mansion which we renovated into the Halsey House, a luxury bed and breakfast and we never looked back.

Mitch and I are avid animal lovers, with six exotic parrots and our beloved rescue dog Tess. Renovating these splendid old houses has become our passion and Mitch is certainly developing his woodworking and cabinetmaking skills here.

Someday I hope to get back to my hobby of making quilts, if I could only find the time. When we have the opportunity for a vacation, you will most likely find us in the Caribbean scuba diving.

Why KC Christopher chose Ithaca

This area of upstate NY is known as the Finger Lakes region, and its micro climate gives us milder winters and much less humid summers than other parts of the state. It also makes for a wonderful place for growing grapes. We are surrounded by wineries and vineyards, sandwiched between the Cayuga Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

We have sparkling lakes, over a hundred waterfalls, parks, farmland, forests, quaint villages and small cities. Although we are within a half day's drive from many large cities, we are a world away from the bustle and crowds.

Clarke's Cottage is 15 minutes from Ithaca, where Cornell University and Ithaca College bring culture and a vibrant atmosphere. Restaurant choices abound here, including several who specialize in featuring the bounty of the region's local farms.

The charming city of Watkins Glen is also 15 minutes away, with a park along the shores of Seneca Lake, The Glen racetrack, and the not-to-be-missed Watkins Glen State Park. The stunning beauty of this area is apparent through all four seasons, and you can be as active or as relaxed as you choose.

Amazing place for all ages!

Let me start off by saying we really didn't want to leave! The house is beautiful and was exactly as described- right down to condiments in the kitchen! The linens, pillows, and mattresses were amazingly comfortable (and I was 7 months pregnant when we stayed, so that's definitely saying something!) Our group had 5 adults and 4 children that ranged in age from 1 to 6 years old. We truly couldn't have picked a better home base for all of our activities. Ithaca has some amazing kid friendly activities (science center was a hit) and the bird lovers in the group really enjoyed heading off to hike at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. We also hit a bunch of state parks (Robert H. Treman State Park was like something out of a Tolkien novel) and visited Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen. The best part? Coming "home" to Clarke's Cottage. We ate in for every meal (Viking range was awesome!), told ghost stories with smores around the firepit, and wore the kids out running and rolling around the hill out front, when we weren't taking them out on the pond in the kayaks we brought. After putting them to bed, it was hot tub time under the stars for the adults. Luxurious!

One of the really big pluses to this house for us included how the library and bedroom downstairs could be closed off, so that became a separate suite for the couple without kids in our group. Another thing we loved were the large capacity washer/dryer- a big bonus in a house of kids. Towels and linens were more than plentiful and while everything was lovely in the house, nothing felt too formal or hands off. Mitch was very welcoming and the binder of general house info was very helpful.

Overall, we would definitely stay here again- except next time we're going to need at least 2 weeks!

We live near the cottage, but selected it as the place to stay with our out-of-town guests on the weekend of our (local) wedding. It was really lovely, KC and Mitch were friendly and helpful. The decor is beautiful, especially the master suite and downstairs library.

We did not realize that one of the bedrooms had two twin beds (rather than a full/king/queen), and you should be okay with paying attention to the rulebook.

Also, don't forget to admire the ducks.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jessica, and the best of luck to you in your new married life! You bring up a good point, it is best if viewers of the Clarke's Cottage listing read through the information we have provided to make sure what we offer suits your needs. Our bedroom configuration is listed, two with a king bed, two with a queen bed and one with two twin beds, for a total of five bedrooms. As for the ducks, well, you will just have to come stay at Clarke's Cottage to see what they are all about!

Amazing Place!

My husband and I rented this house for our first vacation with both sets of parents, and we could not have asked for a better place! It was perfectly located near the vineyards (we were there for the Cayuga Lake Wine and Herb Festival), yet close enough to Ithaca to be able to go to the store when needed. The kitchen was absolutely amazing and that, plus the dining room, allowed us to save money and spend more time together over dinners at the house. There was plenty of room (2 living rooms!) so people could get as much space as they needed. The entire house was immaculate and had everything you could think of needing. We can't wait to come back!

A Delightful Country Retreat

This is a really fabulous place to stay, not far from Trumansburg, New York and Ithaca and Cayuga Lake are 25 minutes drive away via Route 79. The rooms are comfortable; there is ample accommodation for 8 people and the pond is a delight. As is the amazingly well equipped kitchen.
The only quibble is that there is no TV guide for the enormous TV in the living room, so trying to guess which channel was which was like a quiz show with no rules.
The cottage is immaculately presented; it is a real chance to experience a sense of country peace and serene living all at once.
Overall a really great experience and this is to be fully recommended.

We had a family reunion at Clark's Cottage over the Thanksgiving holiday. What a beautiful place to stay--a quiet place in the country with pretty views, beautiful furnishings (including very comfy recliners for napping), comfortable beds, lots of room to move around, nice bathrooms with plenty of towels, a convenient laundry room, FABULOUS kitchen with all the accoutrements, and a hot tub to sit in under the night sky! Owner Mitch was very helpful and truly seems to have thought of anything a guest might desire. I highly recommend a stay!

Fantastic vacation Property

My family of 6 from Massachusetts, plus 4 relatives from England stayed at Clarks Cottage in August for a week and had a totally relaxing wonderful time. The Cottage was amazing, it was equipped with everything you need and more. The decor and rooms were outstanding. The location is quiet, we had many nights by the fire, drinking the local wine, watching the children swim and row on the pond. The extra bonus was the newly installed top of the range hot tub, we were in heaven, especially the 2 teenage girls!! While staying at the cottage we visited Niagra falls and the local vineyards. Very tranquil spot in the finger lakes, it is a place to stay, awesome!! Owners were very resourceful with information and really nice people. Thanks for such a memorable time

Fantastic Family Vacation

Submitted: August 28, 2010 Stayed: August 2010
My family just returned from a week long stay at Clark's Cottage and we couldn't be happier! There were 9 of us (6 adults, one 7 year old, one 20 month old and one 23 month old). The grounds were amazing. The 2 large yards provided great space for baseball, kickball and of course great amounts of running! The pear tree was a big hit with the young children as was trips around the pond on the raft.

At no time during our stay did we ever feel cramped. The layout of the cottage provided ample areas for all our interests as well as nap areas for the children. The kitchen is amazing! We cooked all our meals (for all 9 of us) everyday and enjoyed the considerable counterspace and storage areas.

The rooms are furnished beautifully, each room has its own unique charm. There were plenty of linens and towels provided but if you needed more the front loading washer and dryer was available. With small children, that was a considerable bonus.

This was one of the most relaxing vacations our family has ever had. We will have very fond memories of this trip forever. Thank you.

Top-notch at a great price

Let's get the location out of the way: it's rural. It says so right on the listing. It's maybe a 20 minute drive from Ithaca and less to Watkins Glen. The location is ideal if you're in town for wine country or have stuff to do around Lake Cayuga and Lake Seneca.

I don't think I can say enough about the cottage. The owners could have spent a fraction of what they did spend on construction, renovation, appliances, and detail, and it would still be more than adequate. A six-burner Viking gas range, gas BBQ, heavy doors, fantastic wood everywhere, plenty of patio furniture, and a swim-able, boat-able pond (boat provided!), a jacuzzi, two living rooms, very comfortable beds and soft sheets.

I stayed here for several days with friends before my wedding at the nearby Fontainebleau (it made a great staging area). Had I known how nice this place was before I arrived, I would have arranged fewer things to do in Ithaca and more entertaining at the 'cottage' as it is very well equipped for just that. The kitchen is enormous and has everything you'd need to make some great meals. There is a generous supply of linens and a laundry room if you need more.

The price can't be beat, either. We stayed here during Ithaca's high season, and the per-person cost was well below what you'd pay for any of the (mostly mediocre) hotels in Ithaca. If you absolutely must stay on the lake or on the commons, then maybe this 'rural' cottage isn't for you, but I can't think of any other reason why I wouldn't rent here every time I came up to the area with a group of people.

Finally, I have to confess that I wasn't the best tenant - we didn't leave the house in great shape and while we didn't trash the premises, we created some headaches for the owners and any big rental company would've socked us for our entire deposit. Instead, the owners were very approachable and straightforward with us about what we did and didn't do, and very easily and fairly resolved the problem (of our making) with us. It's not often you encounter the golden rule these days, but even if the cottage wasn't as great as it is, I'd go back for that reason alone. I hope I'd be half as awesome as these folks were if I rented a house to total strangers.

A relaxing getaway

We rented this house for a small reunion of college friends and it was perfect for the occasion. We couldn't have picked a nicer place for our get-together. The interior of the house is exactly what you see in these pictures, elegant and beautifully furnished. But the place is even nicer in person. There's a serenity in watching the orange sun rise over the field across a two lane country road. Or sitting beneath a full moon in the backyard, having a bonfire, and roasting marshmallows. We even took a swim in the little pond out back, perfect for a humid summer day. KC & Mitch were very helpful with directions and making sure the house was what we needed. And being only 15 minutes from Ithaca, and close to the wine trail, made it ideal. Highly recommended.

Perfect Family Time

We are a family of 5: 3 daughters (12,10,9) and my husband and I. Clarke's Cottage is ideally located in the calm peace and tranquility between both Cayuga and Seneca Lakes. It was the perfect setting for a quiet summer's respite. There are plenty of fabulous things to do in the area to get you back to nature and great eats. After the hiking and swimming and touring of the day, Clarke's Cottage was just the ticket for winding down. The fire pit pond side was perfect for roasting marshmallows and recapping the days adventures while listening to the lullaby of the frogs and the soft glow of the fireflies. The home was just that...home. Comfy and inviting and spotlessly clean! Very well organized and stocked. Movie night in front of the tv, snuggling on the super comfy couch was just what the Doctor ordered.
Being within short driving distance to so much was exciting when deciding what to do each day. Waterfalls, gorges, lakes, museums...parks, history, shopping, wineries, breweries...best mini golf around (glow in the dark!), Cornell, Ithaca, Watkins Glen, Trumansburg, Our Favorite Robert H Treman! Fabulous hiking for all skill levels. Swim hole and diving in the falls!

Best hosts by far. You can tell by all the detail how passionate they are about making your time just what you need. Girls loved playing badminton before dinner! I enjoyed walking the grounds and enjoying the gorgeous views and the peace and quiet. Sinking away into quiet bliss in the magnificent master bath melted away layers of stress. We are definitely recharged and cant wait to return for another respite!
