“Great ambiance, good location”

We stayed at this B&B (without breakfast) for 4 nights with our family. It as a very nice experience. The suite that we stayed in (Terracotta Suite) was very large and beautifully decorated. The whole house is a gem. The location is very good: a nice, quiet part of South Harlem, just one block away from major subway stations. Better then any 5* hotel! Would surely return here again.

“Utterly Amazing!”

We came to NYC for the US Open and decided to stay somewhere other than a typical hotel. WOW, what a great decision. This is not a house, it is a home. A gorgeous home. We felt like we were staying with a dear friend. Thank you Dimitri. Our 16 year old said it best...."I never want to stay in a hotel again." I guess you're stuck with us.

“Hidden treasure”

We enjoyed very much staying in Mount Morris House. It was a very comfortable, quiet, and peaceful place to return after our exhausting explorations of the City. Combined with the great hospitality of the hosts and the high quality and spaciousness of our suite, we felt that we got a great value for our money too. If you are a history fan and want to know more on New York history and architecture, don't hesitate to ask the host. He is a history professor and a fountain of information on old and new New York!

“lovely house, lovely host”

Mount Morris House is one of the few hotels where the real-life appearance of the rooms surpasses the website photos. My room, "Sage", was huge, charmingly decorated, and very comfortable. The bathroom has a huge bathtub and a separate large shower unit. The front lounge is breathtaking, with vintage lamps and shelves full of books.
Location is very convenient--lots of good restaurants nearby, walk to Central Park, just a few stops on the subway from all the attractions. And Harlem itself is amazing.
But what made my stay the most memorable was the kindness of Vasili, the owner, who found a room for me when I arrived 1 day earlier than my reservation--I had forgotten that I was going back over the International Date Line. Not many hoteliers would have gone to such lengths to help a guest rectify her own mistake.
Don't have my photos on this computer, but will be adding some of my own. Can't say enough good things about Mount Morris House.

“A sophisticated slice of heaven”

I couldn't believe my eyes when we arrived. This exquisite brownstone is beautifully decorated, clean and artful. We felt taken care of. The host was unobtrusive but extremely helpful. The loft is an extraordinary space for New York, huge, beautiful with lovely art and a spacious feel. We got to know the neighborhood which is quite nice with a great coffee shop around the corner.

“Best B&B ever”

“Best B&B ever”
  • Submitted: Dec 13, 2011

Me and my 80-year old Mom picked this wonderful B&B for our 6-nights stay
in October 2011. We could not have picked a better place!

Every nice word you read about this place on Tripadvisor is correct - this
is a true gem in New York!

The hosts Vasili and Dimitri are the simply the best B&B hosts you can imagine. They are so sweet, thoughtful and attentive to their guests needs. They have lived in New York for many years and happily shares tips and information about restaurants, sightseeing, how to get around, shopping - whatever!

We stayed in the Sage suite on the second floor, my Mom in the queen size bed and me in
the sofabed. We were both equally comfortable.
The room is large, by New York standards I would say huge, and very nicely decorated.
There is a roomy bathroom, with bathtub.

The whole house is wonderfully decorated. Dimitri loves antiques, and it shows.

I got a flash-back in my head, from my backpacking days long time ago, when I used to stay at simple guesthouses around world, meeting people from all over.
This B&B is like a backpacking-deluxe-place for grown-ups.
There is always coffee, tea,
We really enjoyed staying in Harlem and always felt completely safe, also at night. The area where Mount Morris House is located is very quiet. Like others have said before, it is fast and easy to go downtown. We took the bus a few times on 5th Ave all the way down, alongside Central Park. It is a nice ride, but the underground is faster.
We were surprised that people were so friendly,
as soon as we entered the bus, or underground train, no matter how full, someone would always offer my Mom their seat.

We totally loved Mount Morris House, and I would not even consider staying anywhere else on the next trip.

Thank you Dimitri & Vasili for making our stay so special!

NYC accomodation at its best!

Stayed in Jade room for 7 nights in November 2011. Mount Morris House is a beautifully restored brownstone house in a great place of Manhattan (Harlem, adjacent to Mount Morris park).

First location. Located in Harlem this place is not central. However, its connections to downtown NYC are great. There is a bus just outside the house that takes you all the way down the 5th avenue (only a short ride to museum mile). There are two nearby subway lines. Closer 2/3 (direct to TImes square and Brooklyn) and a few meters more to 4/5/6 (direct to Grand central and ferry in the south). Note that 2/3 and 4/5 subways are express lines, and they are really quick when going downtown (it takes only around 15-20 minutes to Times Square). The district itself feels safe, and we didn't have any problems. Also, the house is located only 11 blocks away from the Central Park. There are also some very nice (and also popular) restaurants around. Taxi from airport costs 45 USD + 7 USD tolls (6.5 + 0.5) + tip. One can also use a public transport, it takes around 1h40-1h50 with Skytrain + line A to 125th street (only 7,25 USD or 5 USD + weekly metro card).

As mentioned before, house is beautifully restored in victorian style. Rooms are huge - at least our Jade room was, also well decorated with some nice touches. Bathroom is also big, there is also a bathtub. I think the size both the room and bathroom are big for the NYC standard. Rooms are comfortable (enough place to put away your luggage), clean and very quiet during the night. Wireless internet access is free, there is also a large LCD TV with cable TV.

Owners are friendly, knowledgable about New york and history and very helpful. Basically, their ability to renovate the house and their hospitality make this B&B stand out above other.

To sum it up. We had a great stay in this superb B&B and would be glad to return someday. Yes, price per night is high (also depends on a season), but much less than you would pay in a hotel with similar luxury - where room would almost certainly be smaller. Value is therefore good in otherwise very expensive city to stay.

Highly recommended.

Would never stay anywhere else again in NYC

I have stayed in several B&B’s over the last 7 years in Manhattan but I consider
Mt Morris House the best find and experience for too many reasons to list here.
If you appreciate turn of the19th-20th century brownstones, i.e.historical architecture, nationally preserved neighborhoods, quiet, feels-like-I live-here, then Mt Morris House is it.
I have stayed in inns in Chelsea, West Village,on the West Side, and in Brooklyn over the last 7 years during my visits to NYC.
Mt Morris House is a treasure and the best find of all. I need go no further in search.
I am grateful to Vasili and Dimitri for preserving it . They are very warm and helpful to their guests, most courteous, and genuinely sincere hosts.
Harlem is an amazing culturally vibrant niche with it’s own historical acclaim. Yet with a swift cab ride, subway or bus you are a short distance from Midtown, East or West side and Times Square.
Harlem with all it’s cultural offerings ( Hudson River parkway walk for long stretching walks in lieu of transit to Midtown in a woodsy setting) also has sweet bistros and cafes in the neighborhood within walking distance and the newly acclaimed Red Rooster restaurant. (The Apollo Theatre / amateur night mid week!) All not to be missed.
I echo all 5 star posts of satisfaction previously posted on Trip Advisor.
Less than 30 min drive from La Guardia Airport, one arrives at Mt Morris House feeling back home again, even if you are from California but need that NYC culture rush from time to time.
Of course, my husband and I have already booked to return this Spring 2012 !
