Party of 6
Great location, we stayed over the christmas holidays, the building was under renovation so the common areas were a bit tatty, and the building was surrounded with scaffolding. Luckily all work had stopped due to some "stop order" from the building inspectorate since 22nd. Nov. There was a gas oven & hob but no gas!, so "Y" ( the rental agent) arranged a 2 plate electric hob (huh!). No internet or cable TV but "Y" suggested we buy a mobile/celluar dongle at her expense (another huh!). "Y" was away in France so when we contacted her the Monday before the Thursday we were to arrive she only got back to us @ 2.00am on the Thursday morning , just hours before our flight from Dublin Ireland. This caused us a lot of anxiety as we were not sure we had a place to stay on our arrival. and could have been deliberate as only then did she advise on the various deficiencies giving us no time to arrange alternative accommodation. No hot water on the last day ( "Y" refunded us for this inconvenience ~20% of one days rental). At the asking nightly rate for ten days this apartment was outrageously expensive by any standard and as we found out, applies to most things in New York. Don't get me wrong!, I don't mind paying a premium for the good things in life, but anyone will feel disatisfied if they are repeatedly "gouged" just for the so called privilege of being in New York. So lets just say the rental agent & this apartment are very "New York"!
Owner's Response: Even though I understand that the guest was deeply unhappy with his overall stay in NY. I strongly disagree with this review. There were big mistakes made by the "rental agent". It was very unfortunate that the hot water was off on the last day (another incident due to the ongoing renovations at the time). One of the big mistake of the rental agent was to ask the guest what discount he wanted instead of offering a strong discount in the first place for the inconvenience. The guest answered and asked for the discount that he was offered. It was clueless from the rental agent to believe that the guest would be satisfy with his own offer. It was not her only foolish misunderstanding of the situation but she is only human.
In any case there is an essential point that has been "voluntarily" omitted from this review. The building had been under renovation for a while and to the surprise of everyone it was still not finished by the time the guest was supposed to arrive. The guest was offered and alternative accommodation of a bigger size in Midtown East for the same price a week prior his arrival in case the gas was not back on. But the guest chose to "try" the apartment in the conditions that were stated prior his arrival because they really wanted to be in Midtown west though there was nothing that could be done about the gas or the internet. It must also be said that the "rental agent" called the guests from France 4 times during their stay to check if anything was needed and all was alright within the present conditions. The guest only expressed his happiness about his stay, acknowledging the nicety of the apartment despite the tatty aspect of the hallway at that time. So the one-star and recommendation for pet owners (is it malicious?) that the guest left for this apartment are not a fair and sensitive recommendation in my opinion.
Understandably the guest has not enjoyed New York the way he was expecting to and part of the blame can be put on the way the accommodation was at that time and the way the "rental agent" handled the situation. But it is also due to the mildly unrealistic expectations of the guest. We love this unit but this is not a unit that represents the "finest things in life" and on which you pay a premium as indicated by the guest. It is a regular apartment that most of our guests have found very well located, always clean, picture and description accurate, of a good size and a nice play to come back to after a day of sightseeing.
