This is the best place ever. John it's such a nice person, the apartment it's great, it's big and very clean, you will feel in home.
The subway it's just a few blocks away and you get to midtown in 15 minutes or less. The neighborhood it's very safe, at night you can walk with out problems. I truly recommend this place for everyone how want's to visit nyc and live like a real new yorker and also save some money. If you stay in this apartment you'll definitely want to return.

For two women visiting New York we were very skeptical about booking this apartment since we were unsure about Upper Manhattan. We had such a great time and felt so at home in John's apartment that we even gave him a present on our last day. We decided on the option to share the apartment simply because we would be saving a significant amount of money. This option turned out to be a pleasant surprise. We shared with a lovely couple visiting from Europe. We barely saw them and privacy was NEVER an issue. The apartment itself is big, beautiful, very clean and fresh smelling. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed i.e. pots, pans, utensils etc.
I've only been to New York once before so I was a bit hesitant on the location but as soon as we arrived we felt right at home. The neighborhood is fantastic. It's a multi-cultural area, with a lot of families and young professionals. We had a few late nights when we came home slightly tipsy and we always felt safe when walking back to the apartment. The great thing is everything from food to clothing is 2 to 3 times less expensive than midtown which is only 15 minutes away!

John was very hospitable and accommodating but very strict with his house policies. One afternoon my colleague forgot the key and locked herself out of the apartment. John was there within minutes to let her back in. This was one of the nicest places I've stayed in a looong time, and I travel about 6 times a year. I would without hesitation recommend this apartment to anyone traveling to NYC. I can't wait until our next visit!

A good place to stay in NYC

Me and my friend stayed in this apartment Nov.8th - 18th 2009. I choose this apartment because the location and price. I contacted the owner, John, who sent me detailed prices and rental polices. He gave me the options of renting a single bedroom in a SHARED solution (with other people in the second bedroom) or in a NON SHARED formula (only us in the house). We choose the second solution to have more privacy. Remember that even in this solution, John has full access to the apartment, since he has an office in the third room and he likes to check that everything if ok with his customers and the house. I called John driving from the airport to his house and he was there just a few minutes after our arrival. He showed us the apartment that was very clean and bigger than I expected. There was some food in the fridge and John invited us to use it. Same for shampoo, toothpaste etc. We setup our laptop on his WiFi internet. Than he toured us around the neighborhood and showed good places to eat and shop. He showed us the closest subway station and made himself available for every necessities. The apartment location was good, it seemed to be safe, always people going around also at night. We never had the feeling of being unsafe. We only needed 10/15min by subway to get at Columbus Cirle on the south of Central Park. I definitely recommend this apartment and his owner John.

I stayed at this apartment in late November with my girlfriend. John communicated often with my girlfriend in spanish and was very easy going. The neighborhood itself is very interesting and inexpensive, 3 times less than midtown. John showed us around the neighborhood so we new all the good spots to eat and buy groceries - He also made sure we knew where the subways are, we were downtown in no time.
The 2 bedrooms apartment was very large for a New York flat. Very clean place and smelled good too. Since our budget was very limited we opted for the share option to save $$$. We had no idea what a "share" would entail but doing that was a blessing as we saved a lot and the apartment being so big we had plenty of privacy. The other guests were a very nice couple from germany that we became friends with. Because we had a long list of places to visit and so did they we were never in the aprtment and only saw them a few times at night and everyone was so tired we all went to sleep quickly. They even invited us to their home in Germany ( may be our next trip!)
Staying at John's place made our trip an awesome experience we are planning another trip with 3 other friends and will book the whole apartment.
That is if there are any vacancies after telling all our friends : )

Beautiful Apartment in Excellent Location in NYC!

My girlfriend and I stayed in this apartment from Nov. 16th – 19th. The apartment was perfect for us. We'll stay here every time we come to New York.

The location was great and very convenient. We were a little concerned at first because it’s at 143rd street but as soon as we arrived, we immediately felt safe. There were all kinds of people in the neighborhood, many different ethnicities and races and students from Columbia University. We saw a lot of woman and children walking around alone and the one night we came home at 3am after going to the NYC bars and nightclubs, we felt completely comfortable walking home from the subway.

The apartment was great. We were given the option to share the apartment or keep the entire place for ourselves. In order to save money we decided to share the place and we were so happy we did. The apartment was more spacious than we thought and had enough rooms for privacy when we needed it. It was also much bigger and nicer than in the pictures and had a fully stocked kitchen which we took advantage of. I was surprised at how clean the place was and there was a very fresh scent when we walked in the door, which is very important to me.

The owner, John was very helpful and accommodating. He met us when we arrived and even gave us a tour of the neighborhood. He made us feel very comfortable by introducing us to some of the local deli owners, showing us some of his favorite restaurants, which were delicious and very affordable and showed us all the best subway stops to get around town. It only took us 10 minutes to get to midtown Manhattan.

I would definitely recommend this apartment to anyone coming to New York. It’s a great place for a great price and was perfect for 2 young girls visiting New York. It was safe, convenient, affordable and very comfortable. I’m so happy I found this place. It’s a gem!

Beautiful Place

My boyfriend and I booked this apartment from mid September to early October. The place is indeed quite beautifully decorated and larger than it seems by the photo. It is in a pretty good location (only 10-20 minutes from lower Manhattan by train) and the neighborhood is very lively. This apartment does have satellite tv and wifi for those that are traveling with a laptop. It also has a fully equipped kitchen where you can cook and take care of your laundry with the washer and dryer.

We were given to option to share the apartment with other travelers and decided to share the first few days we were there and then to keep the apartment to ourselves for the rest of our stay. The owner is very informative and attentive. If we had any issues or needed information about getting around, he would be there to help. He was quite easy to contact on a moment's notice. He even took my boyfriend on a tour of the neighborhood in order to familiarize us with the area. I would without hesitation recommend this apartment.

Affordable, clean, and comfortable apt in NYC!

I booked this apartment for a week in October 09 for myself (coming from CT) and my French friend (coming from Dublin). It was my first non-hotel experience, and I was rather nervous.

We were given the option to share a bedroom or each have our own. We picked the non-share option so we could have our privacy and the whole apt, and were very happy with our choice. We thought it was very reasonably priced, considering you could be in mid-town Manhattan within 10 minutes via subway and a short walk.

John was very friendly and helpful. He spoke French and Spanish and gave us a tour of the neighborhood, introducing us to people he knew in the corner deli or on the street. He showed us all the subway stops and reasonable restaurants. He even invited us to a dance class he taught, which was very kind and great fun.

The location is only a couple of blocks from the subway on a lovely, tree-lined street with brownstones all around. It is a culturally diverse area and seemed safe, with a locked building and tenants who each owned their apartment. I saw people and women walking around alone and safe at night, and people seemed friendly on our street.

It felt like home every night when we came back from running around New York. The apartment was comfortable and extremely clean. It smelled great and the beds provided a good night's rest. The street side was a bit noisy but didn't keep me awake (and NY is full of energy, wherever you stay). There was shampoo and conditioner in the shower and items in medicine cabinet and fridge that we were welcome to use!

We took advantage of the full, updated kitchen and saved quite a bit by having our daily breakfast and a couple of dinners in (great Jamaican takeout place John showed us and wine from local store). There was no kitchen table and chairs but we set up the small portable table in the living room to eat on, which worked.

Keep in mind that John has full access to the apartment. He likes to come by to check on things every day or two and keeps an office in the third bedroom that he used three times during the week we were there. That room was locked and we had keys to our bedrooms. Our things seemed quite safe at all times.

If you are looking for a place to stay for a week or even a night that is clean, affordable and provides easy access via subway or cab to anywhere in Manhattan, I would definitely recommend this apartment!

Bad experience in this shared appartment

Don't rent this appartment unless you don't care to have a shared one...I wasn't satisfied with the deal, but we've been threatened to be left on the street. I was with my pregnant wife, it was 2:45 am, and our host told us he wouldn't rent us the appartment if I kept arguing.

It's not written anywhere clearly on the owner's page, but when we arrived, there was a family in the appartment's other bedroom. Our host didn't even told us it was a shared appartment. We thought we would have the appartment only for us. He pretended it was clear in his messages; it was not.

Our host doesn't have a cell phone to be reached at in case you're late: he gives his friend's voice mailbox number. No way to have a direct conversation.

One night, one of his neighbours puts his music excessively loud until 4:30 am; we were hearing it as if it was directly in the appartment. I tell our host before leaving. He answers "Really?", and not even an apology.

Our host pretends he speaks French on his website but he doesn't.

The ad says "low allergen environment". But there was a thick rug in the bedroom and chemical air fresheners everywhere in the appartment.

So take this appartment only if you're OK with these.
Owner's Response: We speak fluently french, english and spanish. The fragrance in the apartment are air purifiers with a fragrance and can easily be unplugged. We have a phone to be reached at all times since we clearly need to book other guests. From our first e-mail we clearly give you the option to share the apartment or have it by yourself and not to share. Our policies are fair and simple but should be read to avoid misunderstandings. Unfortunately some rare irresponsible guests do not read the policies.
Don't allow the opinion of an irresponsible and unhappy individual who took advantage of a great apartment at an incredible price suade you for enjoying the same savings and comfort.

Our policies clearly states to call when arriving in Manhattan so I can meet the guests downstairs to let them in the apartment and not to ring the apartment bell late at night as it will disturb the Neighbors but the guest didn't call when he arrived in Manhattan. Then he made me wait for him until 3:30 am (!) in the morning instead of the 11:30pm check-in he asked for. Then he obnoxiously rang the bell about 10 times disturbing my neighbors. When I met him in front of the building downstairs, I asked him if he had read the policies and e-mails I sent him. He responded that he and his pregnant wife were tired and that they needed to sleep and that he could not discuss policies with me. When we arrived in the apartment I asked him to keep the noise down because of the other guests, a couple and their 2 year old baby that were booked for 5 days. He complained that he didn't know that this was a share. I again asked him again if he read my e-mails since I clearly sent a booking confirmation stating that it was a share. The other guests that arrived 2 days before clearly understood that this was a share and were very happy with all. Because of the misunderstanding, I offered to reimburse him his deposit if he was unhappy and was willing to let him and his wife spend the night for free and check-out in the morning. He wanted to stay the 3 days as booked and I agreed to it. He didn't bring any towels which is also stated in my policy but I felt sorry for his wife and offered him an extra towel at no charge. They actually stayed the whole time without any complaints and left smiling. Don't allow some unhappy individual who was given the option to get a refund and find better accommodation suade you for enjoying the same savings and comfort he chose to enjoy.

Hola! Estuve con dos amigas en el apartamento de John del 28 de Agosto al 4 de Septiembre de 2.012.

La fotos son exactamente igual al apartamento!!!!
Tv 50", lavadora, secadora, super nevera, a/a....
