Photos and Description of the Captain Cook vacation apartment rental
1BR Oceanview Vacation Rental Captain Cook, Hawaii USA

Imagine sitting at a table or reclining in a lawn chair, perched on the mountain side above Kealakekua Bay, looking over the southern Kona coastline with an unobstructed view at the 1200 ft elevation. 'Wow', you say, 'the view is incredible!' A veritable slice of paradise, with ocean glistening to the west and mountain slopes to the south. Your soul is at peace. Red cardinals and yellow finches are scampering for food. A canoe race or fishing tournament just might be happening in the ocean near the coastline.

We have such a place - a one-bedroom vacation rental on our working macadamia nut and coffee farm. This is where the South Kona Macadamia Nut Company processes its succulent nut products. The grounds around the rental have citrus and banana trees, but the orchard of coffee and macadamia nut trees comprise the commercial aspect of the farm.

The rental is in the lower level of the main house; a screened-in porch has a kitchenette and futon sofa. Very private.

Open another screen door and the avocado green walls of a large bedroom, complete with a queen-sized bed and tropical furnishings, greet you. The bathroom has a large shower. With a separate entrance, your privacy is assured.

Located on Napo'opo'o Road in Captain Cook on the big island of Hawaii, you are minutes away from the famous Kealakekua Bay and other Hawaiian sites of interest. Swim, snorkel, or kayak; drive around the island; visit the national parks; or, just stay put and soak up the view! Shopping centers are close by as are fine restaurants.

Gorgeous Setting, Quaint Cottage

I really enjoyed staying at this cozy little cottage over the Christmas holidays this past year.

The property was very clean and well-maintained. The screened-in patio was a lovely place for morning coffee, and the bed was comfy. I really appreciated the extra amenities, which made our stay more enjoyable:

coffee maker (!!)
boogie board (i had lots of fun with this)
beach towels and chairs
water sandles
iced drink glasses :)
plenty of toiletries

meris was a gracious host. she and brad were kind and helpful. ...and she gave us some awesome mac nuts.

my only concern was that the cottage does not lock at night. i never felt unsafe on their property -- the driveway is quite long and the house is removed from the main road. but i travelled with my best friend, and, as 2 twenty-something ladies, had we known the door didn't lock, we would not have stayed.

that said, we had a wonderful time.

while on that side of the island, my favorite things were the following:

1. eating brunch at the coffee shack, which had bomb coffee and killer eggs benedict.

2. renting kayaks from kona boys (wonderful people) and kayaking on the bay, only minutes from the cottage.

3. driving down to the green sand beach and hiking 3 miles to the most fabulous cove ever.

4. eating lunch at annie's island fresh burgers, where the food is organic, the burgers are delicious, and the waiters are freaking gorgeous.

Kona Getaway

Submitted: October 14, 2010 Stayed: October 2010
We had a short stay (1 week) but it was the perfect place from which to explore the Big Island. Comfortable enough to stay and relax as well, in between excursions. The owners are accommodating, friendly, and interesting conversationalists. The grounds are lovely; views are great. Any recommendations we received from our hosts were true to suggestion. I loved the change from a resort-like environment. This is definitely cozy and private enough to call home for awhile.

Relaxing Getaway!

Exactly as described and pictured--except the photos don't fully demonstrate Meris and Brad's hospitality! We had a wonderful stay here in Kona farm country, enjoying our view of the ocean every morning and grilling outside at night. It was the perfect base for exploring the island, only a short drive from restaurants and sights, but far enough from the hustle and bustle. My fiancé and I didn't want to leave to go back to reality when the vacation was over. Highly recommend to others!

"Our hosts, Brad and Meris made our stay an absolute delight. We were treated like friends rather than customers and appreciate their willingness to educate us in the processes of their Macadamia farm.

Their friend, Sarah, was a delight to get to know. We love having her and James's delicious, multiple award-winning coffee for our caffeine connection in the islands. We'll order more when we've slurped our way through what we brought home.

Rev. Pat performed our wedding ceremony right on site, with Brad and Meris handily in attendance as willing photographers.

The quality of the fixtures and flooring in of the bungalow apartment made our stay extra pleasurable. Excellent sinks, good faucets, top of the line cabinets, well painted walls and beautiful flooring.

The lanai kitchen was such a pleasure to fix short-order meals. Well stocked and such a treat to cook overlooking the harbor.

There is an excellent grocery store filled with an eclectic variety of goods at reasonable prices, which Brad said the store is the best in the state. We hadn't gone in for the newspaper one day and the next day the checker commented that they missed us and thought we'd gone back to the mainland. How friendly is that?

The two handsome dogs, Ki and Chief, cheerfully checked on us once or twice a day . . . Henny-Penny and Chicken-Little provided fresh eggs to go with the succulent oranges and limes we picked from the trees on the property.

Meris makes Madadamia butter, Macadamia and local honey butter, Macadamia oil and Macadamia candy in addition to packaging the plump, mouth-watering nuts she and Brad grow.

We had fabulous food at all the "local places" up and down the coast. Although we had studied the tour books for restaurants, it wasn't necessary, because in the two weeks we were there, we had only tasty eating.

A great place to stay and relax!

A great place to stay and relax! My husband and I just returned from 4 nights at this wonderful working farm and vacation rental. It had all the promised amenities, with a great view and a real "sit and relax" attitude. Which is exactly what we were looking for. Of course, there were tons of things to see and do in the area, and we did a few of them but really, we wanted some down time to just hang loose, soak up the view and pet the dogs. It was just perfect, and we will definately return for another visit. Thanks so much!

What a beautiful place!
It's a paradise!
We've loved everything: fruit trees, flowers, landscape, calm, music and overall our hosts.
They are very generous and hearty.
We'll recommend this place to anyone.

Minnesotan Dream

Submitted: December 13, 2009 Stayed: January 2009
For Minnesotan and Germans, there is the same dream: being able to spend 24 hours outdoors, under palm trees and other tropical plants and colorful flowers, never being cold. For the "W's", there is the additional dream of mountains and sea together and away from the crowds.
Your place, your hospitality, and the added bonus of the macadamia nuts, citrus fruits, and animals all make us want to come back EVERY winter.
Thank you so much!

Poem

Submitted: December 13, 2009 Stayed: March 2009
This is a piece of paradise,
the sun is warm, you folks so nice!
The crickets sing, the roosters too,
and clothes you only need a few.
We traipsed through jagged fields of lava,
munched on macadamias and slurped java.
We watched some whales, and fish galore,
saw turtles...and there's so much more!

Kind Hospitality

Many thanks for your kind hospitality. We have had a wonderful visit and coming home to this quiet rural paradise after busy days on the water and touring the coast was the Rx for relaxation we needed.
We look forward to our next visit and will be in touch when it is time to return.
