HORRIBLE, VERY DANGEROUS NEIGHBORHOOD
We rented this listing for 2 weeks, however, when we arrived we were downgraded to another apartment that had NO air conditioning, NO working stove top burner, and NO ironing board. The remote for the tv didn't work either. The sleeping was a queen size mattress on a plywood floor, a futon, and a twin size roll away bed. By not having air conditioning, the heat in the apartment made it very uncomfortable, especially for sleeping. We had the windows open, but that made it feel damp and sticky. In fact, one morning we found a six inch long slug on the bathroom floor. If I knew prior to our arrival that we would NOT be getting air conditioning, I never would have booked with her. Air conditioning is essential for us, and not a luxury.
The owner also neglected to tell us how dangerous the neighborhood was. We had a lot of suitcases, so we took what we could, locked the car, and carried our things to the apartment. We did this several times, but on our last trip, we immediately noticed that the driver's side window was broken, and our digital camera was stolen. The camera was on the passenger floor, and remember, the car was locked. The owner didn't seem surprised, she said that nothing can be left in the car. But what do you do when you're in the process of removing everything? She should have told us to have one person stay with the car until everything was out. After filing a complaint with the police, we wanted to leave. The owner said that if we stayed, she would return some of our money when we left. She said that leaving would only enforce that the thief or thieves, had the upper hand.
After the second day, we never saw her again, even at check out time. We were told to slip the keys in her mail slot. We tried contacting her several times during our 14 day stay, but when we called her number, we got a message to call back, with no opportunity to leave a message. She did not reimburse us for anything.
NYC is a wonderful place, but next time I will NOT be staying in Harlem! I thought this property was more in Manhatten. It's too dangerous for a fifty year old woman with two teenagers. I would NOT recommend this property for anyone.
Everything in this review is true, and factual.
Owner's Response: This REVIEW is a negative indictment on one of the nicest neighborhood. in NYC. These are lies, lies, and lies! I was shocked that anyone would leave a camera on the front seat of a car in full view of anyone passing by the car. This is not a usual occurrence in this lovely tranquil neighborhood. We and our neighbors were shocked about the incident. This is a large city, and as such, certain precautions must be followed, i.e. removes all items from your car before you leave it. I told her to remove all items from her car and she told me she had taken all items from her car when they left it. I did not personally check her car myself; after all, she is an adult. She admitted a camera had been left on the front seat of her car. When she says “The owner didn’t seem surprised” True, I was not surprised! I and my neighbors were shocked! They even rallied around and offered help. We are a very close knit community. On the day of the incident, I returned from the hospital from a visit with my husband, who unfortunately has suffered a stroke several days before this she arrived, she told me about the incident. Earlier I had informed her about my husband’s condition and told her to leave a note under my door if she needed me. She telephoned and told me what had happened. I went directly to the apartment. I did everything possible to help her get the broken car window repaired. When she said “Maybe we should go to a hotel” I said, “I understand.” I went to my office, took the rent she paid earlier, returned to the apartment and gave her the rent in full. I left the decision to her to decide what she would do. I spent the next morning calling Auto Repairs. After several calls, I located a person 14 minutes away. After speaking to him, she told me that her insurance company was connected to the company and would cover the damages. I personally talked to the repair person before and after the repair. She seemed pleased with the repair. Before the repair was finished, she returned the money and told me they were staying. She thanked me for my support. When I saw this customer during their stay, we exchanged greetings. The night before she left, I received a letter stating she wanted $500 because of the incident. I was shocked! After all, it was her decision to stay in the apartment. This review is completed fabricated and untrue! THIS IS NOT A DANGEROUS NEIGHBORHOOD!
