Photos and Description of the Guilford vacation cottage rental
5 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, sleeps 10

Called 'The Big House', it was built in 1890 and provides breathtaking views of Long Island Sound, Indian Cove, and your private, sandy beach. This is one of the few remaining seasonal homes in New England, with original wooden floors, walls and high ceilings. The spacious first floor includes a large family room, dining room, eat-in kitchen, bathroom, shower and laundry. There are front and rear stairs to access the second floor, which has five bedrooms and a bathroom. The large front porch welcomes you and your guests, while the screened porch is wonderful for relaxed, outdoor dining. You'll enjoy ocean breezes and water views all around.

The neighborhood is Mulberry Point, a quiet, charming area, surrounded by water views. The small private sandy beach area has a floating swim dock and tide pools to explore. Great for youngsters and adults!

The town is less than two miles away. It is well known for it's large historical green, surrounded by boutique shops, excellent restaurants, an Irish pub, toy shop, grocery stores, ice cream and chocolate shop, craft and jewelry stores, hardware store, churches, town library, town hall, day spa, bookstore, post office, as well as a breakfast and lunch cafe'. There are summer concerts on the green, a craft fair and other gatherings. The area is great for walking and cycling. Beyond the green, the town offers many amenities including a farm market, winery and orchard which is part of the Connecticut Wine Trail.

Just what we needed

This is a lovely, relaxing, rustic cottage in a quiet seaside community. If you're looking for luxury or action, go elsewhere, but if you're looking for long, slow afternoons of reading, swimming or simply sitting on the front porch - it's hard to beat this spot.

The house is large and homey. It's old and a bit quirky in its layout, but it's well-provisioned. The beds are comfortable and there's plenty of fans for the warmish nights. We particularly liked the many options for eating and gathering - front porch, screened in side porch, large dining area, picnic table in back. Our only struggle (a tiny one) was that there's only one shower. If we'd had more bath takers, it would have been less an issue.

In short, we'd return in a heartbeat.

Cove Dwellers

The Big house was the ideal location for my mother, sister and I to enjoy strolls on the beach or just relax on one of the two porches to enjoy a good book or take in the beautiful view of Long Island Sound.

We hosted a family gathering and everyone from children to young adults to great grandparents enjoyed their visit.

The cottage has large common areas that accommodate small intimate gatherings. The bedrooms roomy and comfortably sleep ten people.

Although the cottage is in a private secluded area, it is also close to quaint shops or major retail stores. There are also many great eating establishments nearby.

There is a small private beach to lie in the sun or take a refreshing swim. Several family members also brought fishing poles to cast a line off the stone pier.

The community was very welcoming and friendly. We were invited to a neighborhood cookout on the first day of our visit. As we walked through town, we were often greeted with a hello and a smile.

I would recommend the Big House because of its charm, the location is incredible and amenities are outstanding. If it had not been for the fact that there was another family arriving on Saturday, we would have extended our stay an additional week.

I would like to thank Joe for making the Big House a pleasurable retreat.
