After a day of sightseeing, golf, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS in Carroll County, you can kick back at Vista. Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under Vista's gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming cornfields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies.

Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.

Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, the fabulous restaurant of the delux country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut and other familiar eateries are CLOSE and offer faster food alternatives.

The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.

For a quiet evening at your Country Home, enjoy a movie or documentary from a large collection of Civil War DVDs on a large HD TV, which also includes cable TV viewing options.

About Bruce Batten

Vista is located on Fiddler's Green, a working farm that has been in our family for 5 generations. Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team.

Here, where Big Pipe Creek flows through our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today.

Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who lives in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their homes in Alaska.

Bruce Batten purchased this chateau / country house in 2011
Why Bruce Batten chose Frederick

Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by Registered Lansdscape architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased.

This location has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through this property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C.

But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agarian roots.

April 2013 Stay at the Vista

My husband, stepdaughter and I stayed at the Vista for a long weekend recently. The house is spacious and easily accommodated all three of us. The amenities were great. The house was spotless and comfortable. The gardens outside were beautiful landscaped with tulips and azaleas blooming. It is a great house for getting away and having some peace and quiet. We truly enjoyed our stay. The home is lovely and had everything we needed. The host was very nice and greeted us late in the evening to make sure we were acquainted with the home. I would definitely recommend this house and would gladly go back again.

Simply Amazing!!

Vista completely exceeded my family's expectations! The pictures simply don't do it justice. The property is absolutely breathtaking and was the perfect location for our Easter holiday getaway. My 2 young nephews and 2 pups loved running through the fields and hiding their Easter eggs around the house. The highlight of our stay was our amateur photo shoot of the family in the fields during the "golden hour" (right before dusk). The house was immaculate upon our arrival and I must tell you the beds were super comfy! Not only was the property itself perfect for our group (adults, toddlers, and dogs) the location was great as well. Baltimore is only 1 hour away so those in our group that traveled via train from NYC were close enough to make a quick round trip to pick them up. Upon our departure, we were all consulting our calendars to plan our next trip to Vista-- hopefully sometime during this August/September and for a longer stay so we can explore all the surrounding areas. We can't wait to return!

What a wonderful way to ring in the New Year - our stay at Vista was fabulous! The owner and hosts ere wonderful and gracious and a pleasure to interact with. Vista was well kept, immaculate and beautifully decorated for the holidays. This home was extremely well appointed as we did not lack anything. The property was situated off the main road providing the peace and privacy we were seeking, yet conveniently close to the town. We were comfortable and relaxed and felt at home the minute we walked in. Thank you for sharing this beautiful home - we look forward to returning!

If you are staying in the Gettysburg area don't miss the chance to stay at this wonderful home! The home is spacious and extremely clean and well cared for. The Battens offer a charming warmth and hospitality if you so desire. There is an abundant amount of literature, maps, videos, etc. of the area as well as things to do, places to go and restaurants where you can eat. You definitely want to take in the beauty of the area.

Christmas 2012 at Vista Country Home

Oh, how hard it was to leave. The house was (is) wonderful...a perfect place for respite and spending time with family. The layout is so very unique...making for a very open feel. The windows are the BEST...open in all directions, bringing the outdoors in, came with a feeling of being wrapped up in the countryside...truly a cozy feeling. And, of course, the morning sunrise from the master bedroom was quite splendid.

As for the weather...well, one can't complain given a white Christmas is indeed a gift of the season...yet, the times it did snow did bring one to ponder if David (my husband) had something to do with it...everytime he headed out in a car the snow began to fall.

We are home now trying to catch up...preparing for next week. While our post-hoilday world awaits, memory of Vista is indeed an exclamation point for our year of 2012.

A Wonderful Wedding Weekend Stay

My family and I stayed at the Vista for my wedding weekend. My husband and I were married at the nearby Union Mills Homestead. Our family stayed at Vista in order to relax and make the weekend much more stress-free, only 15 minutes from the venue. This is a perfect getaway and we had such great memories here.
Bruce and Melissa are fantastic and the house is in perfect condition. The patio outside was where we spent the majority of our time with a beautiful view and plenty of space to relax and spend time together.
This house is a true gem, we strongly recommend staying here if you are looking for a place in the area, we loved it. We'll always remember Vista, it has a very special place in our hearts!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

This home and its owners are totally warm and inviting. We had a wonderful time at Vista! It is a beautiful, immaculately kept home in a peaceful, calm environment. We enjoyed amazing, colorful sunsets; dinners in the gazebo; and a great trip to Gettysburg. Chris, Bruce and Mary Beth were a pleasure to work with and attended to every detail to make this home and our stay perfect. This is a 5 star vacation home!

Close to Gettysburg, Antietem !!

This house was incredible for our stay. We had 4 adults and 4 teenagers. Us adults got the bedrooms ( with our own full bathrooms ) and the teens got the basement room (with their own full bathroom ). We were able to grill out, have breakfast every morning and just relax. Morning coffee on the deck - so peaceful, I must have counted 15 hummingbirds. This place is just beautiful. The beds were so comfortable. The location is perfect if Gettysburg, Antietem, Harpers Ferry, Baltimore or Frederick interests you. The Battens are wonderful hosts, we wish we could have stayed an extra day to visit, explore their farm, walk the creek and absorb the peacefulness of this place. This house was immaculate !!

Relaxing Family Vacation Home

5 of 5
Submitted: August 19, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
Our family spent a wonderful week at Vista! The house is absolutely immaculate, spacious and has amazing views to enjoy at all times of day. The beds are very comfortable and it was great to take advantage of the kitchen that has everything you need for cooking as well as nearby local stores which make it easy to stock up. Chris and Melissa were gracious hosts who made us feel like we had family nearby. It was a real treat that they shared their bounty of garden vegetables and herbs to be able to cook with fresh ingredients. The location was even better than we expected to do easy day trips to Gettysburg, DC and Baltimore and we unexpectedly discovered beautiful shrines in nearby Emmitsburg. I think our favorite part was when we had time to relax and spend quality family time at Vista. We really enjoyed the chance to: take walks to explore the property and creek, watch the birds - esp hummingbirds, play with the dogs and cats down the road, see the cows, look at the beautiful
flowers, eat meals on the patio with the relaxing fountain nearby, see amazing sunsets and more. Can't say enough good things about staying at Vista and hope we have the opportunity to return in the future!
