All that glitters is not gold
My wife and I, and my four adult daughters, came to stay the last week of July 2011. The house was chosen for its setting [a beautiful island] and location near transportation. Both of those objectives were fulfilled. It is truly a beautiful place. That’s the positive side of this review.
I will describe the house, so you are not fooled by the pictures. It is the most poorly designed house we have ever rented. The kitchen is too narrow, so when people are sitting at the table, you can barely walk behind them or open a cabinet drawer or refrigerator. It is situated on the ground floor, next to a bathroom, and is the only room on that floor. You go upstairs to a “great room,” which has the best space and feel to it. The two bedrooms off the great room are very small. Each has a loft that is reached by a rather steep ladder. The loft beds are shorter and made for children only. The only bathroom on that floor is off the hall that heads toward a small “master” bedroom.
The house and property are poorly maintained. The screens in the house are filled with dirt and dust. A screen door to a balcony we opened ONCE!, came apart because it had rotted away at the bottom. The cabana, which is where we spent most of our time, has holes in the ceiling where wasps have built their nests. If the wind isn’t blowing, there are biting flies. The cabana has a cold water shower and toilet. It is reminiscent of a bathroom you’d find at the back of a gas station, without the graffiti but with all of the ambience. We sat in an Adirondack chair that came apart. The kitchen was infested with ants. The water system, which was described by the “trustee” as being “good well water”, failed on our last day. During our stay, the toilet bowl refilled with a yellow colored water. This was the same water that we used for our dishes!
While there, the omnipresent “trustee”, who lives 200 yards away, asked us if he could conduct a tour while we were there, which we felt obliged to say yes to, which felt like a bit of an invasion of our privacy.
When it came time to return our damage deposit, we were charged for the “damage” to the rotted screen door, a “missing” refrigerator bin, which wasn’t there when we arrived, and 2 hours of cleaning for “marks on the walls and candle dripping on a grill cover”. He graciously did not charge us for cleaning the iron stains left in the sinks and toilets by the water.
Bottom line; beautiful spot, but horrible house and management
Owner's Response: We are happy to report that in the past 5 years we have had more than 50 guests that have had the time of their lives vacationing on the island. We have been fully booked each summer with many guests returning each year. Everyone enjoys the privacy and says that the photos do not do it justice. The house(Circa 2005)and property are well maintained. We spend 2 months in the spring of each year painting, washing windows, landscaping, general maintenance, cleaning and planting hundreds of flowers. Each week the house is cleaned by our Professional Cleaners. 12 Days after this group left they emailed us stating that they had a "Wonderful Week"...there were no complaints. However upon their departure our Professional Cleaners entered the house and found the house to need excessive cleaning. A recently painted screen door, that had been functioning all summer, had been literally broken off the hinges, causing damage to the door frame as well. We reluctantly deducted the repair costs and extra clean-up from the damage deposit. At this point the renters did not want to pay for the damages and came up with various complaints from a loose screw on an adirondack chair to a bumble bee in the beachfront cabana. The complaints are without merit. We do agree however that the sleeping and inside dining arrangements for the 3 Bedroom House were not designed to accommodate a party of their size, consisting of the couple, 4 adult daughters and their boyfriends. We invite you to come and see our beautiful island for yourself...you will be delighted!
