Photos and Description of the New Orleans vacation apartment rental
3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps 6

The Carrollton area has a history of being where the erudite summered in New Orleans featuring lovely streets populated by stately Oaks and beautiful Victorians lining this streecar boulevard. The Elysian is situated along historic oak-lined Carrollton Ave, mere steps from the St. Charles Ave Street car. This 3 BR/2 BA, is one of six flats in a lovely Historic home that has been faithfully restored to it's original grandeur with a mix of the historic and the modern, featuring two master bedrooms, each with a Queen bed, full-closet and one with an en-suite full bath. A junior bedroom also features two twin beds and full-closet. The heart of the home is a cozy kitchen with a large eating/lounging area and a living room featuring a flat screen TV/DVD, cable and Wi-Fi internet. Plenty of room for all to gather and pass an evening, host a dinner party, or settle in for a quiet dinner for two.

Spacious yet intimate, the Elysian is perfect for families or several couples traveling together. The Elysian is a quick walk or one Street-car stop from Oak Street. Nestled in the Riverbend section of Uptown New Orleans, sits Historic Oak street. Whether at full-tilt during the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, just coming to life on weekend mornings with crowds seated outside the Oak Street Cafe for fresh homemade doughnuts and live Jazz, or past sunset when crowds at the ever-popular Jacques- Imo's Restaurant and Maple Leaf Bar spill out on to the sidewalk, there's always something going on. Recent development has brought Oak Street back to life and turned it into a 'mini-Magazine' street with it's eclectic shops, boutiques, and various restaurants of all sorts, local groceries, pharmacies -even good old American fast food!

Good Eats!: Camelia Grille, Jacque Imo's, Maple Leaf Bar, Ninja Sushi, Rue De La Course, Oak Bar, Curry Corner, Mona's Mediterranean, Oak Street Cafe, Sno Balls, Lebenon Cafe, Cafe Greneda, Panchito's Mexican, Little Tokyo, Saltwater Grille, O'Henry's, Brigsten's, Matt and Naddies, Dante's Kitchen, China Orchid, Hana, Cold Stone Creamery, Cooter Brown's Oyster Bar, New Orleans Daiquiri, Le Madelaine, Lousiana Pizza Kitchen to name a few...all within a quick 15 minute walk!

Other Activities: Swamp tours, French Quarter Tours, Cemetery Tours, Walking, Jogging, Bicycling, Rollerblading and Horseback riding on the Mississippi River Levee. It was great, the house is bigger than what it looks like on the pictures and the place in town is perfect wether you want to take your car or not.
Everything is close too and the neighborhood is nice.

We arrived at 6pm but couldn't get the door open. The recent rains had swollen it shut plus the battery in the lock mechanism was dead. We spent the next 2.5 hours watching the handyman deal with this. The owner did dispatch a workman quickly and did offer alternative accommodation for the night but I really would have expected things to be checked and operational before we arrived. It was just not a good experience to start off with.

Once that drama was over, the rest of our stay was uneventful in terms of this rather funky but serviceable apt. The bathrooms need decent lighting and general maintenance; otherwise it was fine but we would not stay here again.

The location is truly inconvenient to the rest of the New Orleans unless you have a car. We were there for JazzFest and were dependent on taxis which got quite expensive and must be arranged ahead of time. The streetcar line on Carrollton is under construction but keep in mind that it's a long ride into town even when it is operational.

We've been coming to New Orleans every year since 1995 and this was not the best accomodation experience. Then again, the pricing is rather inexpensive for JazzFest time, so if you are not too particular, this could be a good place to stay.
Owner's Response: Unexpected things happen, but I honestly don't believe there is anything more I could've done to please Mark K.

We offered several options immediately to address his concerns, all of which he refused. Following his check-out I was told that 'Overall, the apartment was as good as we expected', which is a direct contradiction to his review.

I'm confident that in this situation, I did exactly what I should have done. I immediately offered Mark K alternate accommodations in the same building, so that his plans would not be disrupted at all. I then had my handyman on-site within 15 minutes of his call and I called a locksmith, which he refused and had us to cancel.

Our goal is to provide excellent customer service, which we did. What can I say...it takes all types to run a business. I love the diversity of Guests that I meet in this line of work and all-in-all, I enjoy the interaction. Every so often you're going to get a Guest that just can't be pleased and sometimes they write reviews like this one. I see it as a challenge, not a deterrent to providing great customer service and a superlative vacation experience. I'm sure you'll agree and I look forward to hosting you!

Great Location!

Great location... the house was in a good neighborhood and was directly across the street from a beautiful park (which had a nice farmer's market while we visited). No issues finding parking in front of the house (in addition to the rear parking spot). Kitchen was well stocked with utensils, dishware, and glassware. Overall, a great place to stay with multiple adults or when traveling with a family. Would definitely stay again on another visit.

Dirty

The apartment was perfect as far as location. It was really easy to get everywhere we needed to go. And, it was nice having off the street parking. The stairs were a little steep and some of the bricks were broken so we had to be really careful going up and down. Normally not a big deal, but I was carrying a toddler, so it made me a little nervous. The trolley was out of service during our stay. Not really a big deal, but we were looking forward to leaving the car behind and taking the trolley around.

We were a little disappointed with the condition of the apartment. It was not very clean. The floors were extremely dirty. The sheets in the back bedroom were almost threadbare. The beds were not very comfortable, and since it wasn't very clean, it was hard to settle in to go to sleep. The living room furniture was comfortable and was probably the nicest of the rooms. The chair in the kitchen was filthy. So, I wasn't really comfortable letting my daughter get down to play.

It rained the day before we left and the rain was coming in above the front door. We had to move everything that was by the door so it didn't get wet.

We were told that we needed to clean the dishes, however there was not dishwasher detergent. I would bring paper plates and cups in the future so that I didn't have to mess with it.

There were about 8 towels for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. So, everyone used the same towel for all 4 nights. Not a big deal, however it would have been nice to have 2 per person. There was plenty of toilet paper and paper towels.

The owner did leave a basket with 1 packet of coffee and 2 small bottles of wine and a chocolate bar.

We did contact the owner once to get the wifi code. We had to leave a message and she called back within a few minutes.

If the owner would have the apartment cleaned really good, I think it would be a great place to stay.
Owner's Response: I am extremely disappointed that I was not contacted during your stay and given the opportunity to address your concerns during your stay. But I feel I must address them now as some were perhaps reported in error.

This is an older building but I have never had any complaints that the steps were seen as unsafe. There were apartments on the first floor that I would have suggested you consider had I known that carrying a toddler up and down steps was an issue of concern for you.

The apartment had been completely re-painted the week prior to your arrival and then professionally cleaned, so I find it hard to believe that my cleaning company, who have worked for us for two years, and have always done an excellent job, would've skimped and not cleaned the floors, knowing that they were cleaning up after a painting crew.

There is at least one extra set of sheets in each bedroom, so if the ones that were on the bed didn't meet with your approval, you could definitely have changed them. Regarding towels, there is a washer/dryer on premises, if you felt you needed to wash a load of laundry during your stay you were welcome to do so.

As far as being told you needed to wash dishes, the check-in instructions, which you were furnished with at the time you booked, specify that NO CLEANING IS NECESSARY unless something is spilled or there is a stain. There should have been dishwashing detergent there, however. I will make certain there is in future.

In future, hosts prefer if you contact them, say when you called to ask about the wi-fi instructions, which were included with your check-in instructions, and mention any concerns that you have upon CHECK-IN rather than giving a bad review when there's nothing that can be done about it, but damage to my business' reputation.

I'm saddened that I was not given the opportunity to address your concerns and provide you with a comfortable stay, which is our goal. I see it as a missed opportunity. I welcome you and your family to return and see that your stay was not indicative of a stay at our property.

Very Quaint Place, Good Location

I did a lot of research into accommodations in New Orleans for our anniversary weekend and decided that the Elysian was the best choice. The 3 bedrooms were very comfortable four group of six. We particularly liked sitting on the balcony. It has a view of a park and beautiful oak trees that line the street. Although we had a car, we didn't move it much because the street car passes right in front of the apartment. However, we found out the hard way if you are staying out passed midnight, the street car's schedule is rather unpredictable so we had to get a taxi one night. There was an issue with the television in the living room, but once I reported it, the owner came right over to check out the problem (which was a cable company issue and not an owner issue). We would definitely stay here again if we are ever in New Orleans again.

Owner's Response: Translated from German: Beautiful and spacious Apartment, well equipped. The location is very good street car stop right outside the house, drive about 15 minutes to the center. Nice neighborhood, shopping and restaurants in the immediate Nähe.Wir were 7 adults (coffee can be used as a sofa at a pinch), so it was a bit tight. However, not enough chairs in the kitchen were present (4 pieces), so I would recommend them for a maximum of 5 people. The owners we have not seen, except for email no personal contact, but was not necessary.

Best Location

This place is in a perfect location. It is so close to a trolly station that you can see it from the front door. You can park your car and just take the trolly for a relaxing gas saving trip. It is also in a great neighborhood with plenty of restaurants to pick from in the surrounding area. Including a restaurant called Little Tokyo. They have karaoke rooms and are open until 2am. The beds are comfortable and the house is very nice. The only criticism that I can say is that the walls were not the cleanest. But that is a small complaint. The house has everything that you could need and I was very happy with my stay.

My husband and I did a lot of research into accommodations in New Orleans and we decided that the Elysian was the best choice. The 3 bedrooms were very comfortable with lots of pillows, blankets and closet space and there was always hot water in the shower. I particularly liked sitting on the balcony. It has a view of a park and beautiful oak trees that line the street. The kitchen was great because it has everything you need to cook simple meals. The only items I bought at RiteAid (one block away next to an amazing grocery store) was tape and zip lock bags. The location is perfect for travelers without a car because the street car passes right in front of the apartment. A most enjoyable adventure!

My co-workers and I came to the Elysian while in town with the Lion King. Being on a tour, I have seen a lot of different corporate housing, sublets, and vacation rentals. This was the cream of the crop. We felt like locals! The trolley was steps from our door. The owners were so accommodating and warm. It was lovely. You'll be glad you rented with these folks, but get in line...I'm blabbing to all of my touring friends.
Owner's Response: Thanks Nick! We look forward to hosting you whenever you're in town, which we hope will be often.
