Dirty
The apartment was perfect as far as location. It was really easy to get everywhere we needed to go. And, it was nice having off the street parking. The stairs were a little steep and some of the bricks were broken so we had to be really careful going up and down. Normally not a big deal, but I was carrying a toddler, so it made me a little nervous. The trolley was out of service during our stay. Not really a big deal, but we were looking forward to leaving the car behind and taking the trolley around.
We were a little disappointed with the condition of the apartment. It was not very clean. The floors were extremely dirty. The sheets in the back bedroom were almost threadbare. The beds were not very comfortable, and since it wasn't very clean, it was hard to settle in to go to sleep. The living room furniture was comfortable and was probably the nicest of the rooms. The chair in the kitchen was filthy. So, I wasn't really comfortable letting my daughter get down to play.
It rained the day before we left and the rain was coming in above the front door. We had to move everything that was by the door so it didn't get wet.
We were told that we needed to clean the dishes, however there was not dishwasher detergent. I would bring paper plates and cups in the future so that I didn't have to mess with it.
There were about 8 towels for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. So, everyone used the same towel for all 4 nights. Not a big deal, however it would have been nice to have 2 per person. There was plenty of toilet paper and paper towels.
The owner did leave a basket with 1 packet of coffee and 2 small bottles of wine and a chocolate bar.
We did contact the owner once to get the wifi code. We had to leave a message and she called back within a few minutes.
If the owner would have the apartment cleaned really good, I think it would be a great place to stay.
Owner's Response: I am extremely disappointed that I was not contacted during your stay and given the opportunity to address your concerns during your stay. But I feel I must address them now as some were perhaps reported in error.
This is an older building but I have never had any complaints that the steps were seen as unsafe. There were apartments on the first floor that I would have suggested you consider had I known that carrying a toddler up and down steps was an issue of concern for you.
The apartment had been completely re-painted the week prior to your arrival and then professionally cleaned, so I find it hard to believe that my cleaning company, who have worked for us for two years, and have always done an excellent job, would've skimped and not cleaned the floors, knowing that they were cleaning up after a painting crew.
There is at least one extra set of sheets in each bedroom, so if the ones that were on the bed didn't meet with your approval, you could definitely have changed them. Regarding towels, there is a washer/dryer on premises, if you felt you needed to wash a load of laundry during your stay you were welcome to do so.
As far as being told you needed to wash dishes, the check-in instructions, which you were furnished with at the time you booked, specify that NO CLEANING IS NECESSARY unless something is spilled or there is a stain. There should have been dishwashing detergent there, however. I will make certain there is in future.
In future, hosts prefer if you contact them, say when you called to ask about the wi-fi instructions, which were included with your check-in instructions, and mention any concerns that you have upon CHECK-IN rather than giving a bad review when there's nothing that can be done about it, but damage to my business' reputation.
I'm saddened that I was not given the opportunity to address your concerns and provide you with a comfortable stay, which is our goal. I see it as a missed opportunity. I welcome you and your family to return and see that your stay was not indicative of a stay at our property.
