I am originally from New Zealand and my wife Rebecca is from Scotland. We have been living in the States for the past 10 years. I'm an opera singer and have sung at opera houses and concert halls around the world. My time at the Sydney Opera House was my favourite! I love music,, nature, being with my family, and writing. I'm co-Founder of The Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice and I run the Kingston Festival of the Arts and Opera Theater of Kingston. My wife, Bex is from SW Scotland. We have two young kids- Edrick and Rosa. Edrick is 3 and a wild nature boy perfectly suited to his surroundings. Rosa is 8 and into pop music, art and the world of fashion. This town is going to be too rustic for her before too long and we'll need to get an apartment in Brooklyn or LA! We have lived in many places around the world, but think Phoenicia is one of the most beautiful- the nature here is astounding. Phoenicia is definitely one of the few remaining 'outpost towns'- somehow untouched by the rest of the world. It's sort of fun living over half an hour from the nearest mall, in a sort of semi-wilderness but only a couple of hours from the biggest city on earth! We now live in Kingston- just 30 minutes from the Village House at Phoenicia.
My wife and I were looking for a weekend escape from New York City. We kept travelling further and further North until we happened upon Woodstock where we purchased our first home in the area. After a few years, and the birth of our daughter Rosa we went in search of a larger house. We were in Phoenicia one auspicious day enjoying some wonderful wood fired pizza at Brios- there was a festival taking place in the Parish Field with an Appalachian band playing, line dancing and bonfire. We felt we had discovered Americana at its finest! There was a lovely old house for sale on the edge of the park and it had a 'For Sale' sign outside. Happily this became our home and the birth place of our second child, Edrick. We love coming to Phoenicia- it really has the feel of an outpost town. The figure of Davy Crockett outside the Sportsman's bar reminds us of that daily. We have all the advantages of being in town with its restaurants, cafes, banks, convenience store etc- but if you walk in any direction for a few minutes you're in the middle of wilderness. We love biking up Woodland Valley- it's just over the road and you can bike for six miles along the creek and rarely even see a car! Or take a hike to the Phoenicia Overlook from the back of the Parish Field. We love to swim at the several nearby 'secret' swimming holes and play in the playground in the park out the back with the kids. And we're only 20 minutes or so from North Lake near Tannersville which is one of our favorite picnic spots with awesome hiking and views of the Hudson Valley. Phoenicia really has something for everyone and is so great to visit any season.
