Excellent accommodation and hostess

My wife and I and our 3 teenage children stayed at Ochil Cottage for a week and enjoyed the experience immensely. The house was clean, well kept, spacious and had all we needed. It was also in a central location with easy access to many historic sites like Stirling Castle, the Bruce and Wallace Monuments and various historic battle fields. It is also an easy drive to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Loch Lomond, the Trossachs, the highlands and more. Our hostess Anne was both gracious and accommodating. If you're looking for a pleasant and relaxing place to stay and something that's close to everything yet very quiet and private, this is a great choice.

Great position but not without problems.

I have thought long and hard whether to write a review or not as I don’t want to sound too negative when this is a lovely cottage in an ideal position for touring central Scotland. However when I arrived and was met by the friendly owner I was informed that tar was coming out of the hot water system. This was said as if it was no big deal and would be fixed.

Well the hot water system was a problem. To get any pressure at all in the kitchen you had to first of all go and run the tap in the bath. This is when you could see the blobs of black stuff coming out. I thought it was more like oil but whatever it was, it was not something you would want to bath in! The tar/oil also came out the hot water tap in the kitchen so the basin and the bath were all marked with this substance.

If you tried to turn the tap in the wash-hand basin to hot you got a drip of water. The owner agreed and said that you could only really get cold water there. Not pleasant for washing in! Luckily, I had no evidence that there was a problem with the shower so that was something.

I think that the problem with the hot water could have been a contributing factor to the fact that the wooden kitchen cupboards and work surfaces were covered in a greasy feel so I had to boil the kettle several times and give the kitchen a good clean.

There is a short road down to the cottage that is not tarred and full of quite large pot holes. These covered over in the rain and created a large puddle so you couldn’t see where the holes were so something to think about it if you have a low hung car.

I am sure the owner will have the hot water system attended to but I see that the cottage is booked right through for the next few months so more occupants are going to have the same problem or of plumbers changing the system.

I would have sympathised and accepted the problem easier if the owner had shown more concern for the inconvenience caused and offered a discount as a gesture of goodwill.

The photographs are very accurate of the cottage and there are a lot of positives but I wanted to be honest and frank with my review.
Owner's Response: was very sorry to hear this woman had so many problems with Ochil Cottage I did have a problem with the hot water which is now fixed it was specks or rust coming in the system
I did contact Carol when I read this review and arrange compensation for her trouble

another thing she mentioned was the lane in to Ochil cottage it is not a tarmac road but there is another you can use at back of cottage which is 20yards walk

Superb Ochil Cottage

What a fantastic cottage, we stayed here for nine day's, 4 adults and one child, who was confined to a wheelchair. This wasn't a problem as the ground floor is totally accessible including the yard, the ground floor bedroom with toilet/shower and bath opposite made it perfect for our needs. The cottage itself has every amenity and appliance needed for a comfortable stay and our host Anne was very helpful and informative, just ask there's not much she doesn't know. A truly superb holiday in a great location, what more do you need. Thanks Anne we'll be back soon.

We stayed at Ochil Cottage for 9 weeks during the winter. Really loved it, we felt very much at home and enjoyed not only the house and its amenities, but the surroundings as well. Anne was super nice, the neighbour's horses greeted us every morning, as did the mail man - whose Scottish accent left us wondering what exactly made him so cheerful each day... Walks with our dogs were pleasant, there are numerous paths to choose from; golf lessons and excellent meals at the clubhouse just a couple of minutes away; the village with shops and pubs within easy walking distance; Stirling just a short drive or bus ride away; excellent connections to all directions (Edinburgh, Glasgow, up North); and so much to see that no time is enough. Whether you like history, shopping, whisky or the nature, this is the perfect base - this is true Scotland!
