Located on Soldier Hill above Cane Garden Bay, Makere House and Cottage enjoy breathtaking views over the beach, surrounding islands and Caribbean Sea. With gentle breezes, tropical shaded gardens and a private swimming pool, the house and cottage represent the ideal retreat for two couples, or a family with older children, who want to vacation together but still have privacy and the space needed in which to relax, unwind and have fun.

The villas have been built in the ‘Caribbean Style’ with wooden decks, blue shutter windows, white walls and terracotta-tiled floors creating a clean and simple environment. Both are very spacious containing a master bedroom with king-size bed, bathroom, living room, fully equipped kitchens and covered decks. The house is on the upper arrival level at the end of a short gated drive with ample parking for two cars. The cottage, the swimming pool and sun terrace are on the lower level accessed by a short flight of lit steps through the banana trees.

The signature feature of Makere House is its 12-foot wide wrap around covered deck and stunning views along the north coast of Tortola and across the sea to the US Virgin Islands of St John and St Thomas in the distance. The centre of the house is the open kitchen and living room, connected by a breakfast bar, providing the perfect environment in which to talk and relax together. The living room has a pull out sofa bed if required. The master bedroom opens onto the deck and has a king-size bed, its own en-suite bathroom and plenty of built-in closet space.

The cottage is just as spacious. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, day bed and plenty of closet space. The living room can be converted to a second bedroom with pull out sofa bed for a couple or two single beds for children. Both the bedroom and living room adjoin a 10-foot covered deck. The kitchen is fully stocked with all modern requirements and there is a large private bathroom.

The swimming pool and sun terrace are on the same level as the cottage offering a welcome escape from the Caribbean heat and a lovely focal point for both villas. The sun terrace provides a spacious area for sunbathing, barbequing and al fresco dining around the pool.

You will need to hire a 4-wheel drive vehicle on arrival in Tortola. We can advise you on your travel arrangements, help you find the right car rental company and arrange for you to be met, either at the ferry terminal or airport, and escorted to the property. When you arrive at Makere you will be met by the property manager, who is also a neighbor, and provided with keys and a quick orientation before being left in peace to enjoy your vacation.

We – Adam (41), Tina (42), William (11) and Alexandra (8) have recently returned to live in Hampshire, England. Adam was born on Soldier Hill in 1970 while his parents were living and working on Tortola. In 1999 he married Tina and together they decided to build a home on the same spot with the dream that family and friends could visit the island and enjoy holidays together. The result is Makere House and Cottage and we hope you have as much fun there as we do!

Wonderful stay at Makere compound

Just got back from our stay at Makere House and Cottage, and for us, Makere was perfect. We were two couples, and for that arrangement, I can't think of a better place. We stayed in the cottage, and our friends stayed upstairs in the House. Both were really nice, clean, well furnished, etc. My wife is a bit of a clean freak, and she even commented about how clean and tidy both residences were. The decorations are really nice, and both the house and the cottage have great views out over CGB and beyond, from both inside the house and from the fantastic outdoor spaces.

The layout of Makere House and Cottage is really perfect. the two residences are on two different levels, with the house up top, and the cottage down on the lower level. The cottage appears smaller, but the actual living spaces are not much different. One of the great things about the layout is that if we wanted privacy, we could stay down by the pool, or on the Cottage balcony, and it was like we didn't have any neighbors. When we wanted to be with our other couple, we had happy hour or lunch or dinner up at the house, and usually sat out on the fantastic porch overlooking the pool and cottage, and CGB beyond.

We loved the very close prximity to restaruants and beaches, particularly the restaurants down at CGB, and the beaches there and at Brewers, which is very close. Brewers was a lot of fun, stopping at the little beach bar, and then walking down for a "rum punch" at Gwen's just up the beach. We had quite a few rum punches with Gwen.

All in all, a wonderful trip. Tortola was great as usual, and Makere made it that much more special. We also took the ferry to Anegada for the day--been wanting to do that for many years, and it was a great day trip. Makere is definitely a "10"!

Christmas on Tortola

We rented both the house and cottage for a family Christmas.
The set up was perfect for our family of 6 [including 2 grand children].
We loved the open airy feeling , the wraparound deck, and of course the pool.
Evenings on the deck were beautiful. The view was incredible.
We found the property had everything we required for a comfortable stay.
We enjoyed the many beaches ,Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke on the Mystique.
So many things to do.
The owner was most helpful in answering all of our questions. and we would recommend Makere House to everyone.
We would definitely stay at Makere House again.

Wonderful

We rented both the cottage and the main house in late July for 10 days. We loved the open air home design and the lush tropical setting. The views were fantastic, and the pool was spectacular. Mobbsie the house manager made us feel welcome, took care of our needs and provided some local knowledge. Cane Garden Bay provided plenty of nearby fun. We rented a jeep (Jerry's Rental Car) and explored a lot of Tortola with side trips to Yost Van Dyke (Foxy's and Soggy Dollar Bar), Virgin Gorda (The Baths), and a fun day sail on a classic wooden schooner 'The White Squall II' for snorkling and lunch at the Willie T. Note that only the cottage has air conditioning in its bedroom. The Makere House/Cottage was a big part of our favorite vacation of all time!

A wonderful week in paradise

My wife and I have been to the BVI's many times before but we have always spent most of the vacation sailing. This time we decided to take our kids and spend some time on the shore. We have just settled back in to our normal routine but can't get the memory of our week in Cane Garden Bay out of our heads. What a wonderful vacation we had. We are a family of 5 and our kids are just the right age so that we can take them out in the evening and enjoy dinners and the music in some of the local bars and restaurants. The Makere property was a perfect spot for our holiday. The views were incredible. Whether it was sitting by the pool or on the deck at sunset it just could not have been any better. Tina and Richard have a gorgeous property lush with vegetation and character. We were so lucky to find this spot. We spent days exploring Tortola or lying on the beach. We ventured out onto the water in a rented motor boat to explore many of the nearby islands and made a trip to Jost Van Dyke for the day by ferry to hang out at the Soggy Dollar Bar. I would heartily recommend both Tortola and the BVI's to anyone that is looking for a wonderful vacation and Makere House and Cottage could not be beat for a comfortable home base with sensational views. We hope to return again and again.

Amazing vacation!

My girlfriend and I had the perfect vacation. An absolutely beautiful view, convenient location, pool, and clean tidy accommodations were just some of the advantages. The proximity to Cane Garden beach is very nice, we often had meals and drinks at Myetts restaurant bar, situated right on the beach. Sunsets from Makere are unforgettable. We're very happy to know that both house and cottage are now available for rent, we look forward to bringing back friends and renting the whole place!

The cottage offers spectacular views over Cane Garden Bay and other BVI Islands. It is well equipped and tastefully decorated. A dip in the pool after a full day of exploring the island was most appreciated. Nothing is too far away. I understand that the family will be returning to the UK and that both properties will be available for vacation rental. It would be worth considering renting both properties with friends or family.

Paradise on Tortola

It is a superb cottage with a kitchenette, large living room and bedroom with king bed, decking and a pool and patio area. Everything about the cottage is first class. The view is spectactular and a short 3-4 minute drive to the beach. I would highly recommend the cottage for a couple. There are several beaches within a few miles including Long Bay and Smuggler's Cove, both great for swimming and relaxing. Go if you can!!!!

Our Stay in January

The pictures shown online do not truly represent the fascinating views that this little cozy cottage has to offer. Every sunset we would sit on the veranda (our favorite place) and watch the glowing red ball go down over St. Thomas. The cottage is clean, the bed comfortable, the kitchen nice, hardly any mosquitos due to a lovely light breeze. Looking forward to returning!

Makere Cottage

The pictures of the house do not do the cottage true justice. The view from the poolside, bedroom, and the porch of the cottage is stunning. The sounds, aromas, wind, and even the rain was simply calming and beautiful. The pool was large enough to truly enjoy (and clean!)Moreover, the cottage was perfectly situated and centered to attack the island. We consider ourselves veterans of Tortola but Makere was our most enjoyable time!

Makere Cottage is an ideal villa with magnificant view over Cane Garden Bay and beyond to St Thomas. It has spacious rooms which are very tastefully furnished and carefully thought out facilities. The pool is just outside the villa and so really convenient providing the option of outside dining/barbacuing. I have no hestitation in recommending this villa.
