Villa is located between Sosua & Cabarette, 500 meters from ocean down a paved road. Villa de la Mariposa is our personal residence in the Dominican Republic. It was a tough decision to offer our home for vacation rentals. In doing so, we may request references prior to your arrival. You notice that the calendar is full since we live here 5 or 6 months every year and intend to make Villa de la Mariposa available on a limited basis when we are in the US. Our home is on the north coast between Sosua and Cabarete, located adjacent to Sea Horse Ranch and Sosua Ocean Village.
By this being our residence, many items found in a home are present here. We wanted to have the comforts of home so we probably purchased items not usually found in a rental house. If you need something that is not present, please make sure that Jose is made aware of it and possibly could purchase it for your use prior to your departure.
Staff at Villa de la Mariposa: Our friends manage and take care of our property. We have known Jose for over 8 years and he has been our driver, our manager, but most of all our friend. He will take care of any problems that arise when we are gone. Nelly, and her son Gary, are also more than employees, and also are willing to handle anything you may need while visiting our home. We have know them for more than 6 or 7 years.
Jose is available to show you the area, knows the best restaurants, and has people available to fix any problems that may occur. Nelly will come to the house on the week days to straighten up, light cleaning, laundry services, and possible short errands you may require. Gary will clean the pool and rake the leaves Monday through Saturday. Both Nelly and Gary will finish their duties by 1 PM, but would stay longer if needed. I pay them for being there to assist, but tips for good housekeeping services are not unusual in the DR. I am sure when you leave, they will be your friends as well.
Electronics And Other Amenties: The house is equipped with wireless internet on the top floor with a repeater on the second level. This gives coverage to most of the house, but oftentimes in the DR, it is slower than in the US. The small printer is available (HP Laserjet P1005) for use as well. Upon check-in, Jose or Nelly will give you the WEP password so you can access the router with your laptop or IPad. We have security cameras outside and in the main living area (not bedrooms, etc. of course) but these could be disable during your stay, if desired. The kitchen is fully equipped with gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, blender, microwave, etc. We have a small safe to keep your passports, money, jewelry, etc. during your stay. Ceiling fans through out the house and on the porches with A/C in all 3 bedrooms, as well. Over 100 channels are available on the 2 TVs (located on the top floor- including CNN, ESPN, and even Fox News for our conservative guests). A DVD player, Ipod player are also available for use.
Tips for the DR: Driving is different here due to the many 'motorconchos' (motorbikes used as a taxi). Jose is a taxi driver and will be able to help you on any excursion. His rates are the same at other taxis here and he is a good driver (unlike some I have experienced). If you do not use Jose, always confirm the price before getting into the car. Try to find someone who speaks your language as well. If you choose to rent a car, be sure to pay a little extra for the insurance coverage since your credit card or home coverage may not be available. I have rented on a few occasions and never had any problem.
I have never had a problem using my MasterCard here. I try to limit the use of it due to fees back home. I always convert my dollars to pesos (Jose will do this for you - at no charge) for restaurants, etc. and use my card when buying groceries at the supermarket. Never had any problems. I do not use ATMs due to excessive fees. Checks generally will not be accepted so bring some cash when you come.
