The house is an easy 90 minute drive from NYC to New Paltz, then through 'The Gunks', a world class rock climbing and hiking area that the Nature Conservancy has dubbed one of the earth's 'Last Great Places'. We were lucky to be able to purchase this house from a family that had owned it for over 50 years. I am first of all a painter but have found myself over the years building or renovating, something I truly enjoy. My husband is a writer and also is director of a graduate program in NYC.
We made the critical decision years ago to move to the Hudson Valley in order to have the space we needed for our large library and painting studio as well as land for a vegetable garden and fruit trees. High Falls is an easy drive from NYC which was a necessity for us. The area is home to many artists who have an active relationship with the city. It is also the source of water for NYC and therefore much of the land is protected or is part of the geologically unique 25,000 acres in the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park.
