Not as Represented.
Let us start off by saying that we are experienced VRBO vacationers and have enjoyed the places we rented in the past. We rented the place for a week, and we stayed four days. The Bandera property was not as presented on the website.
The actual building and location were as presented. The condition of the property itself was significantly exaggerated and the detractors based on its physical location were not disclosed.
Starting with location, the owner represented it as being quiet and restful at the outskirts of town.
He did not disclose that the property is located between two highways which are roughly 1-2 blocks away. One is the main thoroughfare (Hwy 173) to Kerrville and has significant volumes of truck traffic. The traffic is heaviest from 6-9 am and can be heard from any room in the house. Also, within a block is a commercial sand and gravel operation.
The yard place at one time was landscaped and we assume well groomed. Today, it needs a lot of attention. There was an abandoned air conditioner lying out in the weeds along the driveway. The grass had not been mowed in some time and was about 6-8 inches high. There were numerous branches on the ground, old stumps and a debris pile in the corner of the yard. A wonderful place for snakes. During our stay a tree limb about 4 inches in diameter came crashing down and nearly landed on the front porch. When we went to investigate the noise we discovered there were two more “widowmakers” just like it hung up in the live oaks. We realize the Hill Country has experienced a prolonged drought, however, there are several dead tree hazards in the yard that need to be removed. Parking was not covered and we took precautions not to park under the trees.
The better part of our first day was spent cleaning. We noticed right off that the air conditioners had a hard time keeping the house cool during the heat of the day. With a little checking we discovered the air conditioning filters were so plugged with dust and dirt that they would physically be sucked inward when the unit(s) would come on. We went to town and bought replacements. There were serious “dust bunnies” under the beds and in the master bedroom. We are talking a half-inch carpet of dust. There were cobwebs on every window inside and outside the house, and a number of them at the ceiling corners and along the porch, which we vacuumed or swept away.
There was a persistent musty/mold like smell in the master bedroom. Again,
Owner's Response: I was warned that everyone eventually gets a bad review, but this blindsided me. One of the worst parts of this one is that this guest and I spoke on the telephone numerous times before their stay, but never once after their arrival and certainly no opportunity was given to me to address, compensate, ameliorate, or even check into any of their issues. No communication- not even a note when they left. I had no idea until now that there had been a problem.
After I received this review I immediately called my housekeeper who has been getting good reviews for almost 2 years to meet me out there then I ran out to the house (I live an hour away) to see how bad it looked. I was greatly relieved. Although I cannot deny that some of these complaints are based in fact, but the degree to which they are represented is unreasonable.
The noise level is just not that bad, in fact I stood in the house trying to hear it and I had to concentrate on it in order to hear it. I have pretty acute hearing. I even asked people I know who have stayed there and no one has even noticed it.
The A/C filters had been in the garbage can- they were 4 months old but are only used on the weekends and not even every weekend. They had some dust but not enough by far to change them out- I pay the electric bills and repairs on the A/C and I do look after them.
We are in an historic drought and I did lose some trees this year- I know they need to come down but I was hoping they'd come back- I used to climb them as a kid. The grass was high because the wildflowers are re-seeding- this house doesn't have a lawn, it's a country house in a natural setting.
I know for a fact that there were no dust bunnies in the master bedroom where these two people were staying as I personally, with the housekeeper, changed out the dust ruffle and duvet cover a week before their stay and we moved the bed and thoroughly cleaned. Maybe there were dust bunnies in the bedroom they were not using!?!
The housekeeper and I tried to detect a musty smell in the master bedroom but all we could smell was the normal smell of the house, a 1940's pine cabin, not unpleasant in the least.
