Great Stay and Fun Place

Just got back from one week at Jean-Louis’s house in North Caicos. It was a great trip and the house is exactly like the pictures. One master bedroom in the main house and two bedrooms in the adjacent room. We were looking for a remote vacation destination and this was it. We rarely saw anyone else on the beach and we liked that especially when we realized how many people were on the main island resorts. Unfortunately I think we hit a little bit of a cooler spell after a rainstorm which kept us out of the water a lot of the times but we still enjoyed it.
Things of Note:
The house has up to 3 Kayaks which was great. We used them almost every day and because of the reef their was very little current going up or down the beach so we never had to put much effort in paddling.
The bugs do exist and they have to be managed be each person differently. The day it rained they were out in force and we got bit up pretty bad. After that we used bug spray religiously on our ankles and eventually used citronella candles that we had brought and it really helped out.
Plan your grocery list ahead of team. Certain grocery items are limited on the island. JL will collect groceries for you for a service fee and we had him do that. We didn’t plan a list for the whole week so some items we couldn’t get on the island when we ran out. For example: Gallon Milk, Beef or Sliced Chicken (we did have a baked chicken on the island). That being said we did go grocery shopping on the island and were easily able to create meals with what was available. Just important to remember that everything is shipped onto the island so the selection is limited when you get there. The liquour store however is pretty well stocked. I felt like I was in a small Liquor store in the US and everything was there for surprisingly reasonable prices.
Rent a car for a few days and not the whole trip. If you rent a car for just a few days you can go to the grocery store and drive around. I recommend a trip to Middle Caicos and Mudjin Harbor. We did a day trip down to the caves where we saw bats and a lot of cool caverns and then went to the harbor to hike, swim and eat at the restaurant. The bay was beautiful and protected enough that there are spots that you can just float around in. The drive there is also an adventure so I highly recommend it.
With that I’ll end this review saying that the house and location is great. JL will help you with everything if you ask. Enjoy the trip!

Our week-long stay at Datai was an eye-opening and truly fantastic experience. While we love to travel, we have never been the beach vacation type -- until now. We can honestly say that we have never had a more relaxing vacation than the one we enjoyed at Datai. I hesitate to sing it's praises too much for fear that the "best kept secret in the Caribbean" will get out and we won't be able to get into Datai in the future. But, it is impossible to not write a glowing review of both the house and its gracious owners Jean-Louis and Martine.
The house - it is the perfect size; is comfortable; is beautifully decorated (we very much enjoyed the original artwork by Jean-Louis); has everything you need; and is in the PERFECT location. The grounds are stunning. When you walk up to the house and enter through the Caribbean blue gate and get your first glimpse of that view -- you will be hooked. The cabana/tiki hut by the water was our favorite spot. I can't think of anything else we would need that was not already available.
The hosts - Jean-Louis was an absolute delight and was very helpful in so many ways. The pre-stocking of some essential supplies that we requested was fabulous. His assistance with local information was invaluable. And the meals he prepared for us were gourmet. We are still dreaming about his Quiche Lorraine.
The location - it doesn't get any better than this folks. If you want peace and quiet, this is the spot. During our first day at Datai we could physically feel the stress ebb away. It is beautiful and serene during the day and breathtaking at night with the stars. We miss falling asleep to the sound of the waves and waking up to the spectacular view from the bedroom.
If you haven't been to TCI before - two pieces of advice - bring sunscreen and bug spray. I wouldn't say either is any worse than any tropical locale - just be prepared. Oh, and leave plenty of time when departing from the Providenciales airport - check-in and security lines are long and slow-moving. We arrived two hours early and would have barely made our flight if it had been on-time.
After our many travels, Datai quickly shot to the top of our list of favorite places. We look forward to returning as soon as possible!!

Oasis within an oasis

My wife and I stayed at Datai Villa for a week in late October and couldn't have been happier with our choice. This was our third trip to TCI and our second to stay exclusively on North Caicos. We wanted a simple, clean, secluded, and comfortable place to recharge our batteries and we were, quite simply, blown away by the accommodations at Datai Villa. Anyone reading this should know, first of all, that North Caicos is not Provo. It is a completely different experience and one that we have come to love. Here we had the beaches to ourselves (except for one day when the beach did get a little crowded....we saw another couple strolling a few hundred yards ahead of us). Seriously, we felt like the beach was reserved for us only. Datai Villa proved to be an oasis within an oasis. It is obvious the owners gave much thought and, with an artist's touch, created an environment meant for peace and relaxation. It was impeccably clean and had more amenities than we needed, but nonetheless, enjoyed thoroughly. I cannot think of one negative thing to say about the place. We were concerned about the lack of air conditioning before our arrival, but we would have never turned it on even if it was there. Listening to the wind in the abundant palms and the sounds of the ocean were priceless. The owner, Jean-Louis, met us upon our arrival and gave us a quick tour of the property (and delivered a delicious quiche) and was gone to his own home nearby. There was comfort in knowing that should we need anything, he was close by and eager to make our stay as memorable as possible. With a phone call, he did arrange for a local fisherman to deliver to us lobster and fish which we cooked on the grill and enjoyed for a couple of days. Other than that our main regret on this trip is that we did not get to know the Renaud's better. Look at the Datai website and the photos there and just realize that none of them do the place justice. It is not just a place, but an environment that envelopes the guest. Our stay was just as Hurricane Sandy was approaching, and even though the weather was not postcard perfect it did not matter. In all of our travels in our 23 years of marriage, we both rank this as the best trip we have ever taken. Some of it was due to the timing and need for respite, but a large portion is due to the oasis the Renauds have built.

This is what I was going to put up.
My family and I spent a week at Datai Villa located in North Caicos on Whidbey Island. The house is well-appointed with three bedrooms-- two face the ocean and one faces the courtyard. The kitchen was well-equipped for cooking. Jean-Louis made us very nice supper for our arrival date. We emailed our grocery list to Jean-Louis-- everything was waiting for us, including a very nice bottle of white wine, when we got to the villa.
The beach is quiet and the sand is white and soft. The water is warm and perfect for a family. I recommend renting a a car. We rented a car from Pelican Car Rental. The car was waiting for us at the ferry station.
We chartered a boat from Big Dee-- he picked us up at the villa and took us out for a wonderful day of fishing and snorkeling.
Datai Villa is the perfect place for people looking for a quiet and beautiful place to relax.

A super relaxing and enjoyable a action

Datai villa is an idyllic place. The site is beautifully tropical and the home is a pleasure to live in. It is decorated with great taste and everything is very functional.
Jean Louis is a perfect host and a good cook, I recommend the pizza, one of the best, and I usually do not fancy pizza! Jean Louis is very knowledgeable of the area and the services available and responds immediately when called. I may say that after the two weeks we spent at the villa, I consider him as a friend.
Yes, there is no nightlife but who cares ! The beaches are gorgeous, the locals very friendly and the local fish and lobster delicious.
The trip from California was long but well worth it, and we fully intend to return.
My daughter and her husband enjoyed it also. They live in West Village NY, and never got bored. They swam, hiked, biked and relaxed, they are ready to do it again.
See us next year Jean Louis and Martine !

What a wonderful vacation! There are several things that make the difference between a great vacation and a disappointing one, especially when traveling to a remote location you have never been previously. I cannot praise the Renauds enough for doing everything possible for you to have a great vacation. Their home is spotless. Their food is delicious (and delivered to you hot!). Their advice regarding the island, services, and everything else is invaluable.
Not only do we think that they have the best location on Whitby, but they also have the most beautiful and thoughtfully designed property. Great care was obviously taken to maximize one's comfort and overall experience.
The only thing we didn't like has nothing to do with Datai or the Renauds (but of course, they warned us!). Make sure you bring bug repellant!

For Seekers of Solitude

Pictures simply cannot capture the beauty of North Caicos or Datai Villa. My husband and I recently spent a week there with two other couple friends. We felt like we were living in a postcard. Datai is the most beautifully landscaped property on Whitby beach-- coconut trees and vibrant pink bouganvilla abound. The color of the water was absolutely stunning. Jean-Louis, our host, was extremely hospitable. He shared his knowledge of the islands with us, offered to cook meals for us, and even stocked the fridge before our arrival. We caught and ate conch and fish a few days. For those who want the seafood without the work, Jean-Louis can arrange for the local fisherman to stop by the villa with his catch of the day. Good to know: 1) bring bug spray or long pants for the evenings. The no-see-ums (little gnats) can be vicious at dusk. 2) The kitchen is well-equipped with just about everything. Could use a new can opener. It took us about 10 minutes per can with the one there. 3) The water is purified through a filter and safe to drink. However, it has a sulfur taste to it. The local grocery store sells reasonably priced gallons of water for those who don't like the taste. Also, kool-aid, lemonade, or ice tea powder can mask the taste. 4) The grocery store is within walking (10-15 min) or biking (5-10 min) distance from the villa. 5) There is a beautiful beach cabana providing ample shade, so you don't have to bake in the sun the entire day (unless you want to, of course!). 6) There are three kayaks for your use at the villa, plus a few bikes. There was also a hobi in the yard (for an additional $300 per week) which we didn't use. We were glad to have access to a safe (for passports and important stuff) and free wi-fi to Skype with family back home. I highly recommend renting a car or van for at least a day or two to check out Middle Caicos, Three Mary's Cay, and Bottle Creek (on North Caicos). It was definitely worth the extra trip from Provo (cab from airport to ferry dock, ferry ride, and then cab to villa ended up being $250 round trip per couple). Our taxi driver, MAC, on North Caicos was very punctual and friendly. In one week, we only saw a handful of people. We hope to return someday!

Lovely property

Jean Louis and Martine are great hosts. The views from the deck and from the gazebo are incredible. JL has planted palms which give the property a real island feel and beauty. There are no other properties nearby which have the palms, only his and for us, that really made it beautiful. The house is nice and comfortable with a great kitchen for cooking. You will cook, because there is really nowhere to eat out (unless JL cooks for you). We had no problem cooking and brought way too much food with us when we could have easily survived on what was offered at the nearby store. Had fabulous fresh seafood delivered for us to cook one night by a fisherman but due to wind, we could not get it every night. The meat is good at the local store though frozen.
The island was like a ghost land--not a soul around though the next door neighbors were there during our week, we barely saw them.
We like deserted beaches and a natural sort of life so this was perfect for us.
The water color is unbelievable. The boat ride over/getting there was much easier than we expected and beautiful. This is definitely the nicest of the properties along the Whitby beach. We were pleasantly surprised that literally nothing is happening on N. Caicos--which makes it perfect for relaxing.
The island was like a ghost land--not a soul around though the next door neighbors were there during our week, we barely saw them.

The Datai Villa is located on a beautiful and remote beach in North Caicos. The house was decorated very tastfully and the grounds were absolutely gorgeous. Jean-Louis was the perfect host and he is an excellant cook. He did prepare all of our dinners for the week. I would highly recommend the lobster and the Singapore noodle dishes.
I would like to mention that there is no air conditioning and there were alot of sand flies at night, but we were there during the rainy season.
