Photos and Description of the Charleston vacation house rental
4 BR / 3.5 Bath LUXURY surrounded by water and marsh. LOCATION!

YOU HAVE JUST FOUND PARADISE!

We are very proud of the cleanliness, convenience and style of The Big Chill!

This fabulous upscale property is unlike any other in the Charleston area! This traditional Southern Style house is situated on more than a half acre of a private wooded peninsula which is a virtual 'nature preserve' and is surrounded by marshland, tidal creeks, and deep water, and with a dock on property. With grand oaks, rivers and marshlands viewed from the porches, decks and windows, you will think you stepped into the historic Charleston past, but with every luxury and amenity of the present.

The Big Chill House is just moments by car to the Historic District and the Visitor Center in Downtown Charleston, and the beaches of the islands. Location, location, location!

The house is a Traditional floor plan updated for modern life and vacationing pleasure. You will be overjoyed by the the fabulous open, fully equipped, gourmet kitchen. Pots hang overhead from a wrought iron rack. Boasting a center island, it is a natural gathering place. You will revel in the numerous gourmet features. The stovetop is gas with 5 burners. Appliances are all top-of-the-line. This chef’s equipped kitchen has it all……..granite countertops, deep double sinks, hot and cold filtered water, trash compactor and oven warmer.

Attached to the kitchen is an open dining room for seating or serving your meals, so you are never closed off from the action. The stunning dining room is customized with faux painting and seating for everyone.

Adjacent to the kitchen is den #2. This is a perfect spot to view the outdoors through the picture bay window, and to sit and read or have a morning coffee. Hardwood floors and oriental rugs add to the ambience.

Step through swing doors into the huge luxurious family room. This spacious great room has 2 stunning leather couches and a large 55' HDTV. Fans turn overhead for summer guests; a large working fireplace warms winter guests. This room runs the entire length of the house from the front to the back.

Exterior French doors open out to wrap-around Southern porches that encircle the whole house. Outdoor ceiling fans keep you cool and keep the bugs away. There are sets of seating all around the house…wicker chair groupings, rocking chairs for viewing, and a joggling board. And although the central gathering spots of this house are fabulous, it just keeps getting better!

No detail is spared to make the bedrooms into perfect sleep and retreat rooms. Unlike typical rentals, this attention to detail for the luxury and comfort of these bedrooms is what really cements this property as a true 5-star rental. This house is made for gathering together……and also escaping from the crowd!

The gorgeous huge Master Suite has a deep thick Luxury King Bed, and French doors open to it's own private outdoor deck, with breathtaking views and seating. The Master Suite, of course, has an attached private bathroom. The suite is large enough to also have a sitting area and two closets for “his and hers”.

Overlooking the front yard, is a comfy queen room delightfully decorated with your luxury in mind.

The next door room has King or Twins – Upstairs. Hardwood floors and area rug. Two Beds connected together to make another “KING” or kept apart and used as Twins. HDTV cable and DVD. Ceiling fan. Those rooms share a designer luxury full bathroom with rain shower and pedestal tub in marble, granite and stone.

The converted downstairs bedroom, off the kitchen, has a Double Bed and a new large private bathroom with a walk in shower and granite decor. The washer / dryer is also tucked into a closet in this cozy bedroom.

Also downstairs is a picture perfect powder room in the main hallway.

To top it all off….the grounds of the house make this the perfect vacation location. Kayaks are on site. Crab, fish, and swim off the backyard dock. Swing in the hammock, or under a tree. Luxuriate in the hot tub on the back deck. Yes! …..you have found paradise.

Wi-Fi is available all through the house, with 5 flat screens and Premium cable.

Why George or Laurie chose Charleston

This is a totally unique property with history back to the 1700's. We loved the privacy, the water and the oaks.

What makes this house unique

There is nothing else like it in the area. Aside from the private property peninsula, it is surrounded by water and has water views of the creeks, the rivers, and the marshes. It is the water views and the tidal changes that really make this property spectacular.

The house is absolutely beautiful. It has state-of-the art appliances and amenities. The bedrooms are comfortable, the bathrooms amazing, and the kitchen was the spot where we spent the a good majority of our time.
The location is absolutely amazing. We were close to downtown Charleston and could get to everything we wanted to see within 10-15 minutes. We loved the docks and kayaked several times.
Laurie and George, you were a pleasure to deal with and I would definitely recommend this to everyone looking for a great stay in Charleston/Mt. Pleasant.

The Big Chill is a great retreat

We had our family in for a destination wedding and stayed at the Big Chill. The owners were very accommodating and informative. Their place is exactly what you see in the pictures and more. The home is a combination old south meets technology and comfort. Our stay was exceptional and easy for such an important event as the wedding. We highly recommend the home and will do it again.

Everything was accurate about the location, layout, ammenities and expectation of the home.

However; as a group of 4 families none of us or via word of mouth would we recommend others to stay there. We felt hassled and watched during the entire stay by the husband, owner.

Several statements were made about # of people that were staying, after the initial check-in the # of people were divulged and agreed upon with the other owner. 3 other comments were made to 2 persons in the group about "How many" are staying there now? Also, the teenager in our group used the hot tub, covered it back and cleaned up but left the temp on high. The owner came over and wanted to talk to who used his hot tub? Said it could have burned his motor which all of us knew there are kickoff switches to avoid that from happening. As a result he told the 2 individuals he spoke with he would put chemicals in his hot tub tonight and no one would use it. Comments were made about the couch and various other items during check-in that made the whole group feel scared to even sit down.
House is lovely, location is great....would not recommend, unfortunately.
Owner's Response: We were initially astonished by your negative comments. However, now we wish to say “thank you” for the lesson and we have made changes for future.
You signed a contract to rent The Big Chill, for 7 adults, and 1 child. For a total number of 8 guests and 2 cars.
However, you ignored your contract and arrived with 16 people! ….including 5 children…WOW! You brought along inflatable mattresses for your overflow people. You said you did not read the contract or pay attention to it.
This number of renters in a 4 bedroom house is dangerously unsafe. It is also in violation of local ordinances. We could be found legally negligent if anything unexpected happened to someone in your group. We are concerned about having enough hot water, and having a working septic system. You were in complete violation of your rental contract. Under an agreement and lease, you don’t retain the right to “divulge” the number of guests upon arrival. We should have immediately terminated your rental, but we knew that everyplace in town was booked. After talking with you, we made a personally difficult decision to continue with the rental to your huge group really out of kindness, but under big discomfort.
We felt very taken advantage of. George did keep an eye on your group because you had so many people about, including many children. He was concerned about safety with the dock and water, and also damage to the house. The insurance damage policy protection was automatically voided due to violating of the contract, so we had no protection from any damage by your group.
Regarding the Hot Tub….a computer error light did go on red. For your health and safety, the cleanliness of the hot tub is checked to keep it in a pristine condition. The tub was looking murky and unsanitary. It simply had to be shocked with chemicals to bring the PH in line, in order to be safe for guest usage. There is an indoor soaking tub also that can be used if the hot tub is not available.
Due to your flagrant abuse of your rental privileges, by arriving with double the agreed upon guests and cars, we have made permanent changes, in order to prevent a repeat scenario in the future. This is an upscale house and not a crash pad. We strive for 5 star reviews, and we aim to provide a wonderful vacation time, and happy memories for all future guests. We feel damaged by your review, and hope that all future guests understand this is a great place to rent.

The Big Chill House is GORGEOUS.

3 of 5
Submitted: March 24, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
The Big Chill House is GORGEOUS. The photos do not do it justice. Renting the house was perfect for this wedding party. Everyone but the bride and groom were from out of state so this gave us a chance to all hang out during the week of the wedding, instead of just at the wedding events. Everyone had a blast and was overall pleased! Would definitely rent again but for half the price of what we were charged. Before your decide to rent the Chill House, there are a few things you should know.
1st - The owners live in an apartment above the garage at the Chill House. Not like that's an issue or changed our behavior, but we were not informed until the week before arrival. It made us feel a bit awkward and not relaxed. For example, when our friend's 2 daughters were outside playing with our dog, the owners were out & about, doing yard work, and so on. It made us feel uncomfortable, or like we were walking on eggshells so we'd go inside. When paying this kind of money, you do not expect to feel that way.
2nd - I had made prior arrangements with the owner to bring my 3 year old, 55 lb Weimaraner, but it was clear when we arrived, they were not happy about it. One of the main reasons we stayed here was cuz she was allowed.
3rd - There were 10 of us staying there and there wasn’t enough beds for. The listing states the house sleeps 13. I confirmed with the owners before booking that some of us were single & wouldn’t be sharing a bed. Lots of $$ to sleep on an mattress.
4th – There was no hot water on the wedding! The Bride was livid and had to go shower at a hotel. They had an HVAC guy there the day before and he never turned the water back on. The owners did turn it on right away when we got in touch with them, but just not something you’d expect to happen when they live there or when paying that kind of money.
5th - Owner knocked on the door the day before our scheduled departure, and asked when we were leaving. I thought that was a little rude.
6th - If you're looking for a place where you can bring your boat, this is not it. You can park it up at the marina near their house but can’t actually have it on the property because there is no room.
Owner's Response: We take all reviews and feedback very seriously, and continually try to improve and listen. We always want to exceed guest expectations, and to make sure this house is a correct match for guests needs. We strive for a great rental experience. I was sad about your list of the negatives, and so I went back through all our emails and history to understand what went wrong. Here is what I found: You inquired to rent for 9 people. I responded detailing the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, pull out sofas, and layout. I highlighted in red that we live on the property in an apartment. You asked to reserve for 3 nights and explained it was due to your limited funds. We turned you down. You decided to reserve for 4 nights. Your contract allowed a max of 10 adults and 4 cars, and included a no pet clause. Then, you emailed me a request to hold a wedding rehearsal dinner. We informed you of a party fee. You decided against it. You then contacted me and requested a price reduction because you would not use the washer/dryer. We said no to your request for a discount. You later contacted me a 2nd time to reduce the number of nights to just 3 nights. Again your request was denied. You arranged for the bride and groom to tour the house well in advance of arrival. You asked to tie up your boat on the dock. We said yes, but that there was no place to put a trailer in the driveway with also 4 cars, and you would have to store the trailer elsewhere. You arrived with a 55 lb dog in your truck and no Pet Addendum and not pet fee paid. The dog ran freely off leash and eliminated in the yard, leaving feces. Yuck. You held a party in the house after the wedding and did not pay our event fee. We felt really awful that there was no hot water that morning ... I think we responded as well as humanly possible to the hot water outage. Within 5 minutes, the hot water was back on. On your final rental day, we did knock on on your door to clarify when you were leaving due to ongoing communication issues, and to ward off any other potential misunderstanding. This house did not match your youthful expectations, on a limited budget, for your twin brother’s wedding. Future guests will know that we live in a nice apartment attached to the house; guests will hear us and see us. We allow only small dogs, for an extra fee and Pet Addendum. Parties are extra. We enforce limits on the number of renters in the house, and the number of vehicles in the driveway. We have had many happy groups!

Beautiful, comfortable waterfront home near Charleston

We enjoyed a girlfriend getaway to the Charleston area and were delighted with our accommodations. The Big Chill is located on a tidal river in Mt. Pleasant, just across the stunning Ravenel bridge from Charleston. You can be in downtown Charleston in about 10 minutes or less and at Sullivan's Island in about 15 minutes (depending on traffic).

Good restaurants and excellent grocery options are within easy access. We shopped and cooked several times, not just because it's less expensive but because we were a group of foodie chefalas who enjoy cooking, especially in a well-stocked, beautiful kitchen. The Big Chill has this! There wasn't anything we couldn't find, except maybe some storage containers and ziplock bags.

The beds were all comfie and had great pillows. I enjoyed the big, old fashioned tub and the rain shower in the pebbled shower.

The owner's are on-sight in the garage apartment, which might be a downer for some. When I couldn't get the wifi on my phone it ended up being an advantage to have the owners nearby. They were great about making recommendations of things to do and places to eat, too.

There is an extra bedroom and laundry room off the kitchen that comes with an additional expense and our size group did not need it. However, I would have liked to had been able to use the laundry facilities, especially since I went kayaking and got my clothes wet.

Speaking of kayaking, The Big Chill is on the water and has a dock and chairs for enjoying the mornings or sunset. They have two kayaks for use as well. I took a kayak out at the perfect time in the late afternoon - the water was like glass and the birds were out. We didn't have very good weather so I was happy I got at least one go in the kayak. Next time, and yes, I'd go back, I'd like to enjoy the decks and docks when they aren't wet from rain and when the weather is a bit warmer. Still, it was a lovely stay in a beautiful home.

Oh, would like a bit earlier check in! 4 p.m. is late for me.

Owner's Response: Dena: Thank you so much for taking the time to post a complete and detailed review. It is appreciated very much and is very helpful to future guests and renters. I know that you are well traveled and so a review from you means a lot!
I am thrilled that you and your girlfriends were able to enjoy yourselves at The Big Chill. This was the rainiest February on record, and I think you were here on some the rainiest days I can ever remember! You ladies are troopers! I do hope you come back during much better weather. Thankfully, you were able to get out in the Kayaks during a dry spell. I dont think you got to enjoy the outside Hot Tub though.
On another note, I hope you dont mind if I clarify a few details for future guests and review readers. This past winter, due to house upkeep and improvements being scheduled, we rented the house to your group ( and others) at our lower than normal rate, but only as a 3-bedroom, instead of as a 4 -BR. We locked off the downstairs bedroom, laundry room and bathroom. You were aware when you chose to rent, that the Laundry Room would not be accessible to your group. All renters and guests in the future rent the house as a 4 BR, with the laundry room, so I want to be sure there is no misunderstanding to future guests that they might not have a laundry room, or that there is a hidden off bedroom.
Also, yes we keep the kitchen fully stocked. We do keep industrial sized plastic wrap in the rounder in the corner under the coffee pot, and we will certainly try to keep plastic baggies for the future. In the drawer below the oven warmer, next to the trash compactor, is an entire drawer of many sized plastic containers. I gues you just missed that drawer! Since it is a low drawer, it is easy to accidentally miss.
I hope you understand that it is not always possible to guarantee an early checkin. It takes a certain amount of time for cleaning staff to ready a house and prepare it correctly, and we have high standards of cleanliness and readiness. I believe that you did request an early checkin and you did have an early check in at 3 PM... after your grocery shopping at either Whole Foods or Trader Joes on the corner. So we do try. We hope to see you someday in the future during better weather! Thank you again for the excellent review and we are certainly glad that you enjoyed yourselves at The Big Chill...on the Waterfront!

Great Place to Relax!

We stayed at the Big Chill in mid-December. There were 6 adults, 3 children and our little dog. Laurie had breakfast essentials for us, in case we weren't able to stop and get breakfast items. The house is beautiful and well-equipped. I believe that Laurie and George stay in the house sometimes, so they have it equipped the way they would equip it if they were there all the time. There wasn't anything we needed that wasn't there. The back yard is the crown jewel. For kids and dogs, there is a lot to explore. The swing was of partiular interest to the kids. Our little dog also had fun running around in the gigantic back yard. Laurie and George are right next door in case you need anything, but they stay out of sight unless you need something. The neighborhood is beautiful and many lovely houses are in the area. You are close enough to Charleston to go into town and it's just a short drive. Close to the house are tons of grocery stores and restaurants. We would highly recommend the Big Chill to anyone who wants a family vacation in a beautiful setting.
