A beautiful retreat away from all the hustle and bustle of daily life. Everything you could want for in the cottage itself. My children and dog both loved it and were sad to leave. We hope to return in the future.

Wonderful Weekend Trip

5 of 5
Submitted: February 18, 2013 Stayed: February 2013
Our trip to Rockingham was better than we could have ever imagined. The cottage was far enough down a dirt road to feel secluded, but definitely still close enough to do day trips without having to spend hours in the car. The place was clean and well stocked with games, maps, books, and snowshoes. Although we were warned multiple times about not having internet connection or TV, there was absolutely no need for it anyway! We made dinner in the kitchen and ate by the large window overlooking the field, while the gas fireplace kept the place warm.

In terms of things to do, we drove to Grafton one day and snow shoed at Grafton Ponds, then stopped in at the Grafton wine and cheese shop and sampled local cheeses and jams. The main street in Grafton is small, but nice for a quick stroll or dinner at the Inn. On the way back to the cottage, we drove through Saxon's River (another little town with a cute main street and Inn) and Bellow's Falls (more pubs and restaurants). Another day we drove through Chester to Londonderry for xc skiing at Viking, and the conditions were perfect. If you are in the mood for a delicious cookie and hot chocolate / chai / coffee etc - try the Moon Dog Cafe in Chester. To finish the day, we got gourmet soup at Smokin' Bowls, which is only minutes from the cottage on the main road.

Although we were there for the weekend of the big blizzard, Donna was frequently in touch making sure we made it safely and that the driveway got plowed (it did, by 8 am!!) This property was well worth every dollar, and we plan to return again. We have told many other family members about our getaway and feel confident they will all appreciate it as much as we did!!

Simply Perfect

Words can’t describe just how wonderful our weekend in Vermont was. This lovely cottage was the perfect setting for a rural getaway. Majestically perched upon a hill, this beautiful home was just what my boyfriend and I were looking for. The open setting (hardly any doors!), bay window and loft are all very charming features. We sat around the fire writing, reading and chatting. The lack of tv, internet and phone were a welcome change from the typical hustle and bustle of our lives. However, don’t let the lack of those modern amenities sway you. The kitchen was unbelievably well stocked with spices, appliances, and staple goods. The two bathrooms allowed us to get ready simultaneously and to get out of the house earlier to enjoy the many “attractions.” We went for a hike and a cheese tasting in Grafton, breakfast in Chester and in Bellows Falls, hot cocoa in Walpol, NH (Burdicks has a very decadent hot cocoa!) and get amazing soup at Smokin’ Bowls – a great little shack with an even better name and menu! There was enough to do locally (well, within 10 or so miles) if you are so inclined, but this beautiful home also entices you to stay in, crack open a good book and slow your life down for a little bit. Even places like the Harpoon brewery which was roughly 25 miles away was a great scenic drive up route 5. With any luck we will be returning to this charming, rustic cottage.

Wonderful weekend away

My boyfriend and I needed a weekend away before I started school again. We also needed somewhere that accommodated our dog and this was the perfect place! The house is beautiful and cozy. The location is amazing. We were 20 minutes from Grafton where we went to the Grafton Village Cheese Company and 30 minutes from the Harpoon Brewery and 6 minutes from the Vermont Country Store. The property is vast and great for walking around.

Things you should bring:
1. A GPS! This was great for finding restaurants and local attractions
2. A portable DVD player (or a laptop to play DVDs) if you get bored easily
3. Books! Tons and tons of books
4. Snacks and food to cook at the house (the house is stocked with plenty to make a great homemade meal)
5. Blankets! Lots of blankets to lay around and cozy up
6. Board games (there is one fun survival game but I would definitely bring more next time)

The Perfect Cabin Retreat

5 of 5
Submitted: November 14, 2012 Stayed: November 2012
We had hoped to stay at this cottage/cabin during the summer, but a funeral caused us to have to ask Donna if there was any way we could change our reservation at the last moment. She was so understanding and flexible, and we settled on a November weekend that was still free. I can't say how happy we are that we finally got there.

It is a beautiful, cozy home inside (the photos give you a taste, but there is a pleasant cabin feel that they can't quite capture) with a nature lover's backyard. We enjoyed mornings tromping through the woods, then travelled to nearby activities. Within thirty or forty minute drives, we took in working farms (maple products of course as well as cheese, etc.), breweries, two great organic restaurants (Cafe Loco and Moon Dog Cafe), raptor encounters at VINS, and glass blowing demonstrations at Simon Pearce. We enjoyed evenings cooking in the cabin's updated kitchen and gathering around the "hearth" afterward.

There is so much to do nearby that we will have to return, both for the sights to see and to stay in this lovely home again.

Fantastic cozy cabin!

We had a great time staying for a week in early October in this clean, well-stocked and cozy cabin. It is bigger than it looks in the pictures, and the layout worked very well for our party of 3 adults and two kids (ages 7 and 4). The peace and quiet of the location is wonderful. We cooked numerous meals and the kitchen had everything we needed tools-wise, as well as a good supply of spices, staples and canned goods.
I was a bit surprised at how many things there are to do in this area within a reasonable drive - historic forts and other sites, museums, nature centers, farm tours and food stands (syrup and cheese!), mountain roller-coaster and other activities for the kids, great hikes, pretty old towns and more. Local food was very good; we especially enjoyed "Smokin' Bowls" soup stand only a few miles away.
Overall a great vacation and great place to stay - would love to go again in the future.

A Week Away

Ted and I had a very relaxing week at the cottage in Vermont. This cottage is tucked cozily away from busy life and that's what we were looking for.
The property was not as clean as we would have liked, but a call to the home owner, she was more than accommodating to us. With a little cleaning ourselves, we comfortably got home-based and then ventured out to all the local areas, and what they have to offer.
Some of our favorite spots were:
Vermont Country Store-the one near the cottage and in Weston
Scottish Pub in Chester
Sugarbush Farm for maple syrup and cheese
Long Trail Brewery and the special walk trail there
Lisai's Grocery in Bellow Falls
Movie night at the Opera House in Bellow Falls
A Day spent in Woodstock shopping
So much more too!
We would recommend this property to others, for sure!

Quiet, Comfortable and Dog-Friendly Cottage

5 of 5
Submitted: September 12, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
We stayed at the Rockingham cottage for two weeks in August. It was the perfect size for our group: a couple with one child and two dogs. Did I mention dogs? It's extremely hard to find a rental that allows dogs, and such a relief that the owner was completely easygoing about it.

The cottage was very comfortable and has a large kitchen, a beautiful two-storey window in the dining area, two full bathrooms and a washer and dryer (especially helpful for a two-week stint you don't want to spend at a laundromat). One bedroom is loft-style, so it's open to the rest of the house, and the other bedroom has a window over the dining area. The meadow surrounding the house is beautiful, though too high in August for walks. It does make the house quiet and private. There are so many activities within driving distance that we couldn't do them all even in two weeks. We enjoyed museums, hiking, small historic towns, berry-picking, bookshops and the many organic farmstands in the area.

We had a plumbing emergency, and the owner didn't mind that we called at 3 am. She got a plumber out first thing in the morning, and the problem was fixed immediately.

All in all, it was a great vacation, and I would certainly recommend this cottage for a couple or small family - with dogs!

Weekend getaway

My boyfriend and I were just looking to get away for a few days and this cottage provided us the opportunity to do just that! The location is definitely away from it all (20 minutes to Shaw's) but we knew that going in! The weather wasn't very cooporative for our planned winter activities (70 degrees during ski season) but we ended up just exporing Harpoon and Long Trail breweries, Cabot stores and celebrating St. Patrick's day and our anniversary :) The owners were great with answering any questions I had. The place was clean and well stocked. We would definitely come back!

I can't tell you how wonderful this cozy cottage is. We had a wonderful stay. Home is nestled in the pines on a huge, private piece of property. We had a fantastic meal at the Saxton's River Inn one night, about 5 miles from cottage via classic, county, Vt. dirt road. Also walked around the cute town of Bellows Falls about 10 mins away and window shopped and did some antiquing. Miss Bellows Falls Diner for breakfast was awesome. Everyone so friendly and comical in diner it was a refreshing place to be. Went to Harpoon Brewery only a 25 min. drive and the beers were soooo good. Evenings we sat by the fire at the cottage and just relaxed and read books and chatted with each other. It's the way life should be. Kitchen is fully equiped to cook and stay right at home. I just chose not to cook. LOL Our two dogs had a great time too. They romped in the fields with us and took a stroll in the woods and splashed in the stream. I can't wait to stay at this lovely, peaceful place again soon, very soon !! Thank you so much for sharing your home away from home with us.
