Our new secret vacation spot!

Our stay at Hibiscus House was outstanding! We'd been to Eleuthera before, so were prepared for the "out-island" way of life. If you're not familiar with what that is, do some research - this is NOT Nassau.

The house was absolutely wonderful. Perfect size, everything works, well-stocked kitchen (you'll need it), and a view of the ocean that I can still see if I close my eyes. It is quiet island isolation at its finest while your at the house. A pretty good stereo to plug in your iPhone and jam out to whatever your in the mood for, and the food and beer stores are an easy drive down the road. (BRING CASH). Great beaches all over the place, and if you start to miss American-style tourism, head over to Harbour Island, there's plenty of it there.

The owner of the house is great, and is genuinely interested in your satisfaction. The caretaker of the house, James, is an invaluable resource, and an absolutely great guy. Have him take you fishing and snorkeling for a day in his little boat for some real, authentic island fishing the way the locals do - as in, dive for your own conch and use it as bait. We caught more fish than we could eat, and he cleaned them for us, too. It's not free, but so worth the lifelong memories.

We will be back to North Eleuthera, and when we make our plans, this house and our new friend James will absolutely be at the top of our list.

Just returned from my time at Hibiscus House. What a great place. The house has everything one could need. I particularly loved the beach with its wonderful small reef. I snorkeled with two little squid almost everyday and got to experience the creatures of the reef as they went about the business of living in the Atlantic. The caretaker, James, could not have been more helpful. He took us on a drift snorkel in the cut and to some great reefs just off the coast. Eleuthera is a very special place in the world and Hibiscus House is a perfect place to experience this wonderful island.

We want to thank Jack, James and all of the pleasant people of Current for making our stay here an enjoyable one. We were pleasantly surprised and so very comfortable with the accommodations. Everything you need is here if you are looking for relaxation, quiet surroundings with the sounds of the ocean and the palm trees swaying in the Caribbean breeze.
I would recommend the car to explore Harbour Island and other areas. Harbour Island is pretty much the only "night life" per se, with restaurants and upscale hotels. We enjoyed spending the day there on the beach. If you drive Queens Hwy. to Gregory Town there is a really nice little souvenir shop to get quality gifts for everyone on your list. I would say you can drive from Current (where Hibiscus House is) to the end of Eleuthera in several hours. The grocery store is in Bluff and Lower Bogue has a Texaco gas station. It is around 3.00/gallon and food is expensive so be prepared. Remember, you are on an island!!
As far a no seems, gnats or whatever the bugs are they do exist but Jack has everything you need to be sure your stay is enjoyable. We didn't sit outside but relaxed in the living room at night watching tv, feeling the wind blowing in and listening to the waves. No qualms with ANY of that...it was heavenly.
At the present time there are 2 beach cruiser bikes and Jack is getting 2 more, we had 4 people so we would have liked that but future guests will enjoy biking around the island. Just a heads up, when the ocean is more rough on your side of the island, you can bike a few blocks to the other side and it will be calm... so you can't lose! Kayaking is superb and my son had a great time snorkeling all week. We saw may tropical fish out by the bouys in the water and around the rocks down the right of the beach. We saw a lion fish, blue, yellow, striped and many more sea creatures. We collected sand dollars and conch shells.
The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots, pans and pretty much all you need. I am sure other guests are like us and leave things behind like shampoo and things but that being said nothing is guaranteed. If you feel you REALLY need it, bring it. No fancy shampoo or little things you may be "addicted" to...like our rockstars :( but we managed just fine.
Basically, you CANNOT go wrong if you are looking for serenity, it is here at the Hibiscus House. Thank you Jack!!
FYI: Jack is building a tiki hut with hammocks...BONUS! Sorry we missed it.

A week that was extraordinary

My wife and I spent a week at Hibiscus House, March 5 - 12. We could not have been more fortunate to have found through VRBO this spot. From the beginning of our search, our experience was upfront, truthful and easy. The owner of this property was easily accessible and checked in with us at regular intervals to ensure that our needs were being addressed. We were picked at the airport upon our arrival by James Monroe, just as we were told. James took us to the grocery store, liquor store and a small restaurant for a take out meal for our first night in Current.
Jack's house is pristine. Extremely clean and well appointed for all our needs, not to mention extremely private. The beach and grounds are as good as it gets. The water is crystal clear the beach is all yours.
We fished all week, going out with James twice to fish and snorkel, and other days fishing at the cut and the town dock. All was beyond expectations. James is the perfect humble guide that will put you where you want to go and catch all the fish you need and let you snorkel the waters of the island. The cost of these activities are not prohibitive and the experience is stellar.
The people of Current could not have been kinder to us. We met many in just a week. They really made our excursion. They laugh and smile a lot- what a blessing.
Our time in Current could have not been better and we will be back - We did not rent car - did not have the desire to go any where else. A rental is available any time.
NOTE - if you need restaurants, night life, water sports-jet skis etc. - entertainment by others - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE - In this location you will entertain yourself and cook for yourself and enjoy yourself by yourself.

February 2013

My Wife and I stayed at Hibiscus house for two weeks in February. Amazing. The house was excellent, clean, well equipped, very comfortable beds with crisp white linens, great kitchen, two excellent bedrooms with ample space, storage and own spacious washrooms. The Vonage WiFi internet access and phone line was a very nice touch, especially as I needed to check on my 91 year old mother on a daily basis. Jack the owner called us on arrival to see if we were OK or needed anything, plus James, one of the local property managers was always ready to assist with anything we needed.

We had friends join us for a week and James took us guys fishing for a day. What a great experience plus we ended up with enough fresh fish for two or three dinners. This was our first return trip to Eleuthera in over 20 years having spent that time exploring all the other out islands. It was fun going back and seeing all the changes, but nice to find that the people have remained as warm and friendly as ever.

For those worried about the No-Seeums, take precautions during early morning and evenings with long pants, shirts and bug spray and all will be fine. No worries. Have fun and enjoy this magnificent property and the wonderful island of Eleuthera. Thank you Jack, a great time was had by all.

Not enough time...

Due to illness, we arrived at Hibiscus House three days later than scheduled. We let Jack know of our changes at the last minute, and James adjusted his schedules for picking us up at the airport, procuring a rental car, and most importantly, taking my husband fishing. The house was clean, lovely and well appointed, and for someone with orders to just sit and take it easy, the back deck of Hibiscus House proved to be the perfect place. I watched out over that beautiful aquamarine water, wandered down to the beach, was entranced by the sunset between the palm trees, and last but not least was wowed by a night sky with ten times as many stars as are visible from my own deck.
A note to all fishermen out there: this is the place! James did a great job getting my husband out on the water, and they brought home enough fish to provide dinner during our stay, and a couple of lobster to throw on the grill as well. Thanks again, James, he's been trying to catch fish all over the world, and it was great to accomplish the mission on such short notice there in Eleuthera.
A few general notes: the rental car situation in Eleuthera is indeed the adventure other travelers have noted, but that being said, ours got us every where we had to go. James showed us where all the important stops were- groceries, ATM, liquor, airport- and we had our bearings after the first day. Jack checked in with us as well on our first night to make sure that everything was in good order, and we had nothing but good things to report.
We plan on coming back again when we have a little more time to explore this beautiful and quiet little island and the surrounding waters and hope then to make better use of Hibiscus House's kayaks and bicycles. Glad to have found this peaceful little piece of paradise.

Hibiscus House is great. Our stay totally lived up to all the accolades from the other reviews, though we have to respectfully disagree it's more suited for the Baby Boomer set. Our girls, 18 and 21, were thrilled with this vacation with the snorkeling with James, kayaking, photography, biking, running, cooking up conch and lobster, and the simple awesomeness of just hanging on your own white sand beach.

I'm certain I could also report fly fishing for bones is another perk if we hadn't timed our trip perfectly with a full moon/cold front/ high wind period. I did get a decent break from the winds and clouds on the final afternoon and (of course) just before I had to bail to make our dinner reservation a school of bones drifted in and just as quickly out of to casting distance. They're in there though.

The dinner reservation, BTW, was at The Landing on Harbour Island which was fantastic but it also reminded us a Conde Nast-level experience is honestly shy of the sincere luxury of staying at Hibiscus House.
Owner's Response: Hi Greg, The care takers and I appreciate you and your family for choosing the Hibiscus House.
Please come back again soon and catch those Bone fish they will
be waiting there for your return.

Thank You
Jack, Joyce,Joseph and James

Had a great stay. Very quiet. Friendly neighbors and locals. Caretakers James and Joseph are willing to please and very helpful. Great place if you enjoy fishing or boating or just walking on the beach. The island has limited facilities and restaurants but the food is very good. Car rentals are a hoot but the automobile will get you to where you want to go and back, although it is a bit of an adventure. There are lots of neat places to explore on the island but keep in mind this isn't "Atlantis" or even Nasseau for that matter.
If you are willing to take that boat ride out to Spanish Wells and have it break down half way back and get stranded on a sand bar, than this is your kind of Island. Live the Island life as it was meant to be lived. Pick your own coconut and listen to the ocean and feel the evening breeze.

Jack, We wish to think you for the most wonderful and pleasent vacation that we have had in years, our stay at the Hibiscus House was everything and more then we could have asked for. It was so comfortable and clean, beyond our greastest expections, even more than the picture you painted us. To deal with restored our faith in doing business by phone. Our needs were taken care of at all times, I can certianly say to future guest that may read our review, you're time spent at this home away from home will be a experiance you will enjoy for a long time to come, peaceful and quiet like you could'nt imagine. James, the caretaker could not do enough for us but not so much that he interfered with our privacy. He took us out on the boat for a day of fishing and snorkleing and just a very enjoyable day. He made us feel like family, very pleasant man to have met. We look forward to our next stay. Thank you for a very pleasant stay at your home away from home. Larry & Debra Roche Oklahoma City Ok
