A corner of Paradise

La Poumayrette was simply gorgeous in an idyllic position. In the Gresigne forest, with wildlife and greenery in abundance, this holiday gite afforded the ultimate rural retreat. Local shops in nearby Bruniquel/ Penne meant that although we had a wonderful feeling of isolation, it wasn't too far away to nip out for essentials. (We did the big shops during the stay in Montauban where the Leclerc store had everything and reasonable prices).

The gite itself is lovely - really spacious, comfortable and with plenty of character it was well appointed with everything you could need for a great stay. The kitchen was great and the cookbooks provided by the thoughtful owners were well used for two weeks of al fresco dining. The lounge was comfy and welcoming and all the bedrooms/ bathrooms were excellent with plenty of storage space. The pool was beautiful - pristine and with plenty of pool-side furniture for long afternoons relaxing in luxury.

During our stay we saw deer, a pine-marten, butterflies, owls and hawks and possibly the best view of the night sky we had ever seen.

For days out we got as far as Carcassonne ( well worth a visit), Narbonne plage, Cordes-sur-ceil (utterly magical) and Montricoux. We went regularly to the nearby and delightful little medieval town of St Antonin Noble Val (don't miss the market on Sunday morning!) and went canoeing/kayaking from there. We also discovered a superb restaurant there called Tentation Beffroi and the service/ food were excellent and to be recommended.

The whole experience was superb - from booking with Ann the owner who is very helpful and efficient and gave us plenty of information and clear directions etc, to the property itself which was absolutely charming ( thoughtful touches like books, DVD's and tourist info all provided were appreciated) and to the area which although quite unspoiled provided a wonderful family holiday for us all - that has left us all keen to return.

We recommend it most highly for a really wonderful, relaxing holiday in a fabulous location

Owner's Response: I don't think there is anything I can add to this! Debbie's comments reflect the experience of all our guests and as you can see from the web site there are many other delightful historic towns and villages in the area to visit.

Debbie stayed at La Poumayrette in mid-summer but it is also a wonderful spot for a late spring/early summer holiday when the fields and road sides are ablaze with orchids, poppies, wild roses and many others.

Idyllic Spot

Such a beautiful house in such an idyllic spot. Rush hour is one car a day going along the track at the side of the house!

The house is beautifully positioned with magnificent views down the valley - a perfect spot for early evening drinks to watch the deer coming into graze.

The house is nicely furnished with simple but effective decor. There is ample bedding and towels. etc. Everywhere was clean and well maintained. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of pots, pans and dishes for any meal.

The pool was very well maintained and crystal clear. The gardens are beautiful. Someone has obviously spent a lot of time over the years making them look so lovely!

What I couldn't get over was how peaceful the whole area was. All you could hear were birds singing. At night there are sounds of other animals - not quite sure what, but much rustling and snorting.

There are lovely but simple restaurants nearby. The information book in the house lists these. This booklet is extremely useful and informative. We ate at home on several occasions. The local produce is lovely and Saint Antonine market is very definitely the place to visit if you want to self cater.

The provision of books, games and cd's are a lovely touch and make this house a real "home from home".

The local towns are well worth exploring. A little hilly perhaps, but there's usually a well placed bar or cafe to help out!

The owner - Anne - was very helpful in the run up to our holiday. She obviously knows the area well and nothing is too much trouble. She pointed us in the right direction for supermarkets and trips out. However we didn't go far. The walks around the house itself are lovely and packed full of nature to observe.

The whole experience was a treasure. We loved everything about the house. It was so peaceful we relaxed and unwound very quickly. Just what we needed. And we're already pencilling in May for our next visit.

Thank you Anne for sharing your lovely house with us.

AN IDYLLIC HIDEAWAY

What a fabulous find!
As a family, we've been renting properties all over France once or twice a year for 25 years, and this farmhouse has to go down as the best yet.
The description of the accommodation and surroundings is accurate and everything worked as it should.
The swimming pool was very well maintained, with twice weekly visits by the pool man to keep it pristine. With the exception of one rainy day, we were blessed with a fortnight of glorious weather, which meant that the pool kept up a very acceptable temperature and was therefore used almost every day.
La Poumayrette has 3 different areas for al fresco eating/drinking/reading, etc, so it's easy to follow the sun or the shade around the house.
The views from the property are stunning, looking out onto green fields in one direction, and across wooded hills and on to the Montauban Plain to the west, where a west-facing terrace offers the perfect place for 'sundowners'.
This area of southern France is really great for sightseeing. As well as being situated close to the rolling Gaillac vineyards, the house is within easy reach of a handful of charming medieval hilltop villages, the ancient town of Cordes-sur-Ciel and the historically important city of Albi, to name but a few highlights of the area.
So, what are you waiting for? - just get yourselves out there!

A wonderful relaxing holiday in a perfect location

We recently stayed at ‘La Poumayrette’, which really is a place of peace and tranquillity in an idyllic location, however with 2 children we needed to ensure there was plenty to do at the property and in the vicinity and we were not disappointed.
With five double bedrooms and three bathrooms the villa comfortably sleeps ten people and the master bedroom leads directly to the pool area which is surrounded by landscaped borders and trees which provide shade for those looking to doze after a long lunch! The pool is a good size, secure at night due to the cover which is a legal requirement in France and the kids spent much of the daytime in there with various inflatables! Downstairs the villa is open plan with a generous kitchen and dining area. The living room is also a good size with a huge wood burner which would be great for a spring or autumn stay and there is room for a table tennis table which hosted several competitions during our stay. Leading from the sitting room is a terrace with stunning views across the forest and down the valley – it was not uncommon to see deer in the fields and the occasional wild boar! The villa is in the middle of Europe’s oldest and largest oak forest, Foret de Gresigne and you are spoilt for choice with beautiful walks either starting directly from the house or in the vicinity.
The ancient village of Penne is about 5 miles from the house, dominated by the ruins of a 12th century fortress with a great terrace restaurant and a handy shop for stocking up on groceries. Bruniquel is a similar distance away and is another picturesque old village with a small supermarket and a quaint pizzeria/creperie which will keep the kids quiet whilst they munch through a variety of pancakes. Slightly further afield is the town of St Antonin, situated on the Tarn river and famous as the location for the film Charlotte Grey. There is a market here every Sunday which is the focal point of the region and as well as shopping and a couple of good restaurants St Antonin is also the starting point for various kayak companies though which you can organise a trip down the tarn gorge before returning you to your car. The fortress city of Cordes Sur Ceil is also well worth a visit with fantastic architecture and shops and restaurants a plenty and the drive there takes you through wine producing countryside with vineyard after vineyard along the way – if you have a tee total driver with you it is well worth a visit to one to sample the local wines!
Owner's Response: Thanks for such a wonderful review, Mike, I can't think of anything to add!

It is a wonderful place to holiday with children - mine have spent holidays there for the last 25 years and have enjoyed many different aspects of the location as they have grown up.

You are also right that the wood burning stove makes the house very cosy for a spring or autumn visit - hopefully you'll come back again and enjoy the region in all it's beautifully varied moods!

A perfect holiday in a perfect place

My husband and I decided to splash out and book ourselves a lovely get away from it all holiday where we could properly relax and enjoy the French countryside. Having spotted the property on the website we stopped looking immediately knowing we had found our ideal holiday home.

The house was absolutely fantastic. Well maintained, and even bigger than the pictures suggested, it had absouletly everything you could need. Pool, barbecue, games, maps, bikes, recipes, DVDs and books to name but a few things! The kitchen was very well equipped (it even featured a dishwasher) and the Super U at Negrepelisse (20 minutes away) was ideal for getting all the shopping.

Anne was really helpful in the run up to the holiday and supplied useful suggestions as well as perfect directions from the airport. This was then supported by a welcome pack by Laurette, which was a nice surprise as it allowed us to have a well needed cuppa and our first of many taste of French bread.

The local area is absolutely fantastic and we would definitely reccommend visits to the local villages of Penne, Bruniquel, Puycelsi and St Antonin (the Sunday market was excellent). We also visited Cordes sur Ciel, Najac and Carcassonne - all very worthwhile. The biggest trip we took was to the Pyrenees for the day. My husband being a Tour de France fan was keen to visit Col d'Aspin and the Col du Tormalet. We also vistied the Cirque de Gavarnie - what a view.

We had intended to visit lots of places but the house, pool and surrounding location were just too nice to leave and with the weather hot and sunny most days getting in the car just didn't seem worthwhile. The pool and barbecue were certainly well used during our two week stay.

We saw some amazing sunsets during our visit. The view from the living room over the valley left us in awe as night after night we were privileged to see the sky turn an array of reds, oranges and yellows. We also some some great wildlife - deer, buzzards, eagles, lizards, frogs and the biggest bees I've ever seen.

In short La Poumayrette was everything we thought it would be and more. We would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful get away from it all holiday in a charming part of the world. The biggest honour we can probably pay it is that we already hope to return there next year despite having never ever returned to the same place on holiday in our 20 years together!

Owner's Response: What a wonderful review! Thank you so much Alison!

September can be a wonderful month to visit L Poumayrette. The area is always tranquil but, there is a sense of really having it all to yourself. Many of our guests with an enthusiasm for wildlife and nature would also recommend May and June when the meadows and lanes are carpeted with wild flowers including some amazing orchids.

I note Alison's husband is a cycling enthusiast; we're finding more and more keen cyclists coming to the area for the wonderful range of challenges and the chance to enjoy the beauty of the landscape on the gentler sections!

A fortnight is definitely not long enough and you will be very welcome back!

The Best Yet.....

After experiencing many wonderful holiday locations and homes around the South of France, this one is outstanding. It has everything you could wish for and is excellent value for money. There was just the right mix of rural location, the luxury of the pool, the historic area with its castles (we loved Penne and Najac especially) and when we returned after a day out, it was lovely to come 'home' to such a spacious, comfortable house. We could relax with a good book, play games from the many provided, enjoy table tennis tournaments, swim or just soak up the views and the amazing variety of butterflies - not forgetting our regular evening views of the visiting deer!
There was plenty of room for everybody to have their own space - there were nine of us - and we enjoyed sitting around the table outside well into the night, playing games or eating under the night sky glistening with stars.
House manager Laurette was very helpful and easy to contact if needed.
This beautiful area of France is full of interest and there is so much to see and do that it's not possible to describe it all here! We definitely intend to come back and would love to spend a return visit at La Poumayrette.

This house was in all ways better than we expected: the space inside, the terraces, the quiet location, the surrounding nature.

We were with 10 people and there was still plenty of room to be on your own, in and outside the house. The terrace facing west is my all time favorite, with a superb view, on hot days in July it was a piece of heaven during the day in the shadow of the house. And late in the evening we went back there to watch the sunset.

There were deer coming out of the forest close to the pool almost every day. If it were 2 eagles flying over our heads, or 2 buzzards, is still under discussion, perhaps we'll have to go back soon.

Great get away in rural Southern France

I would agree with all of the reviews to date. I have stayed here twice over the last two years.

The accommodation is superb (clean and very well maintained) and is in an idyllic location. The house is laid out well and makes it easy for a large number of people to stay in one house together (good number of bathrooms, location of bedrooms etc). The rooms are big enough to enjoy things together, such as cooking, eating, swimming, watching tv, listening to music but also offers enough space for individuals to enjoy separate activities by themselves if they so wish!

We made use of the bikes during our stay (quite hilly on the way up but a good down hill run on the way back!! Would suggest evening or early morning rides if the weather is warm). Cordes is a particularly pretty small town nearby and well worth a visit. St Antonin offers an excellent canoeing service (Variation) with very friendly staff. This is always a highlight of the holiday! The weekly market at St Antonin is an enjoyable day out. We have had access to a car both visits and I would suggest this may be necessary to enjoy the local area.

I would recommend this to anyone interested in visiting the south of France!

A real gem

La Poumayrette is a real “get away from it all” farmhouse in a beautiful setting. The rooms are spacious and cool even in August. We were a large extended family holidaying together and the layout of the house lends itself well to two families staying together with three bathrooms and five bedrooms in an L shaped layout. The lady who looked after the property phoned us during our stay to make sure we were happy which was a nice touch.

The owner has left lots of games and toys which is great if you have children and there is of course the table tennis table which we made great use of in the evenings. The pool is large and very secluded.

We enjoyed St Antonin Noble Val for the market on Sunday morning and some evenings during August and canoed from here one day. We are keen walkers and walked from the house to the nearest village, Penne. A bit steep to walk back though! Whilst we were holidaying Penne had their medieval weekend which was very enjoyable, but every village seems to have something going on in August. We visited Cordes and Albi and particularly enjoyed the new Toulouse Lautrec museum there. We are also keen rugby followers and managed to see Toulouse and Montauban play at the beginning of the season.

It is a drive to the nearest supermarket, about 20 minutes, but Bruniquel has a well stocked small shop, as does Penne.

The area is lovely, very unspoilt and we found everyone very friendly and welcoming. We would recommend La Poumayrette for a really relaxing holiday.

Relax by the pool, enjoy local foods

5 of 5
Submitted: August 30, 2009 Stayed: July 2009
I first holidayed at the farmhouse a few years ago with a group of friends just after University graduation - it offered an excellent environment in which to relax and enjoy some wonderful locally-sourced French foods and wines. (Note that it's about a half hour drive to the nearest large supermarkets, so you will want to stock up on your drive here from the airport.)

We went back this summer and this time spent our time exploring some of the nearby historic towns, a real treat for anyone who likes medieval architecture. Of particular note was the cathedral at Albi and the winding streets of Cordes.

As a hayfeaver sufferer I did have some trouble on our first trip (which was in late June of that year) but this time we went in August and I was hayfeaver-free.

The farmhouse itself easily sleeps 10 people in its 5 rooms and the foot-thick stone walls afford plenty of privacy. The kitchen is large and well-appointed and the pool is superb. Nature is your neighbour and the only other people we saw near the farmhouse all week were the pool guy on one day and a farmer moving bales of hay in a nearby field on another day. Don't expect to get 3G reception on your iPhone either (note that you do get enough reception to make calls though)...just expect to chill out.
