UNSAFE. HORRIBLE. FREEZING.
Driveway & stairway unsafe. Child & wife fell numerous times due to the solid, thick ice in the driveway and on the stairs leading up to the house while unloading the truck. Walked into a beyond freezing, below zero house. Warmer outside, due to home being out of oil (Homeowner just there the weekend prior.) Called homeowner, he sends us to the store a few miles away to get Kerosene to try and turn the furnace on. With wife & child in tow, I oblige to help him. Kerosene soaked, with children & wife staring at me I can not clean off because the faucets are frozen. Bathrooms unusable (on the road for over 4 hours mind you). Lit a fire in the fireplace so the kids & wife can stand in front of it to get warm while I work on this house. (My vacation time, right?) After further inspection of the home, find shower head blown off, both toilets are frozen solid, ice coming out of faucets, washing machine hoses are frozen solid - clearly realizing we can't possibly stay, we mad-dial anywhere looking for another house or condo (we have a truck full of food & prepared meals for our ski weekend - my wife thinks and plans ahead!) After 2-1/2 hours and no one can use a bathroom, we being the pack up process again. The homweonwer did try to get us a hotel room (CLEARLY this will not work as stated but we appreciate the efforts.) In over 30 years we have never spent a night in a hotel room. Just pure ickkkk! This is why we rent houses/chalets/condos. Then the oil truck comes and refuses to come down because the driveway isn't plowed wide enough, subsequently also refuses to fill oil unless we stay. We're not the homeowners and now it's about 9 PM and we have to get the kids somewhere safe and to bed. We can't stay. Homeowner asks us to (REALLY?????!!!!) So my family walks out and falls repeatedly on the way down the stairs again. We're finally out of this danger zone. The homeowner did not take proper precaustions or property management to make it safe. We paid him cash; he said he didn't have it upon returning and eventually gave us a check a week later, not cash. he also attempted to dispute and refute the $55 I paid for Kerosene. He ultimately gave us $5 SHORT! A blow after losing one whole night and spending 2-1/2 hours working on his home, covered in kerosene. We also had to listen to how he had to spend money on oil and emergency delivery. We kept hearing about how he had taken a bath...what about OUR bath. Stay away. Totally irresponsible homeowner.
