Photos and Description of the Great Camanoe vacation villa rental
Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6)

The 3-bed, 3-bath residence is comprised of 4 structures and has recently undergone a major renovation, including imported teak furniture from Bali, modern appliances, and completely new kitchen and bathrooms. Featuring a Caribbean Colonial style, stone paths abound and private wooden decks extend from each bedroom and living area. Wonderful indoor/outdoor living spaces with Mexican tiled floors have been created that form the heart of this secluded retreat. The redesigned kitchen opens onto two covered, but open-air and spacious dining areas - one facing east and the other facing west. Loblolly trees and mature vegetation provide shade and resting spots for songbirds and the occasional kestril, while large boulders and orchids bring tranquil beauty to the footpaths.

Stargazer, which is near the top of the tallest hill on Great Camanoe, was originally built a little more than forty years ago by world renowned astronomer Dr. Fred Whipple and his wife, Babette. The site was chosen both for its unobstructed view of the heavens, and for the heavenly beauty of the islands surrounding it. Stargazer, formerly known as 'The Porthole', is consistently cooled by fresh trade winds from the East and it overlooks Scrub Island and Marina Cay, with a sweeping 280 degree panorama from Virgin Gorda all the way round to Beef Island and Tortola.

The jetty sits only about 1.5 miles away from Trellis Bay and the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island, easily reached by the 17 ft Boston Whaler with the 70HP outboard motor that belongs to the house. (Boating skills essential.) Stargazer is located in Privateer's Bay, the eastern settlement on the island, which boasts a community building with a library and bathroom near the jetty and community beach. There are several miles of steep roads and paths that connect you to other houses, beaches, great snorkeling reefs, and the Nature Preserve. Stargazer sits on 4+ acres and is the perfect place for those who crave adventure, seclusion, and luxury.

Great House at a Remote Location!!!

Just returned from a five night, six day stay at Stargazer! What a wonderful property! From the boat ride over to the car ride up the hill you immediately feel a sense of isolation and we found it was the refresh we needed. The house layout is the perfect incorporation of inside/outside. The views from EVERY porch literally make your jaw drop. We loved spending the evenings watching the sunset having cocktails on the main porch facing Trellis Bay!

We opted to order food from the local grocery store and had supplies delivered to Trellis Bay at the same time we met Andy. We ate most of our meals at the house and found the kitchen to be fully equipped and supported our preparation needs! We had one meal at Scrub Island and the food was DELICIOUS, highly recommend going over for at least one meal (new chef).

The small boat worked well but the first two days the swells were high which meant we had to stick close to Great Camanoe (Monkey Point, Cam Bay, and Marina Cay). We did take the ferry from Trellis Bay to North Sound for one full day and it proved to be a great option for high swell days. The last full day the seas were flat and the boat made it over to Cooper Island which was a beautiful option for lunch and snorkeling. (One comment on the boat, the motor (and boat itself) are older and despite doing the correct ratio of oil to gas the engine was skipping a bit during all of our adventures so get used to the boat before you venture out too far!)

We have literally never experienced such beautiful views (one of the best might be from the master bedroom shower)! Now... back to reality.

Owner's Response: Hi Julie,
Thanks so much for your glowing review. I'm glad you were able to manage the boat & trusted it to take you to Cooper. We've put a lot of money into repairs of the boat itself, which I think is really solid & safe. But I'm afraid that a new motor will probably be needed before too long.

I hope 'reality' is being good to you.

Best,
Sandy

A Slice of Heaven

Our family of five, with three teenagers just returned from eight fabulous days at Stargazer Villa. To begin with, arrival was a breeze. After flying into Beef Island airport, and a very brief walk outside (less than a NY block) to Trellis Bay, we were greeted by Andy, who brought us over to Great Camanoe by a short, (less than 10 minute) boat ride. On island he and Maline, the lovely housekeeper, showed us around the beautiful villa and answered all of our questions. The house, which was recently renovated, is spectacular. Situated on the top of the island and surrounded by forever views of distant islands on three sides, photos cannot capture the beautiful vistas. The three large, comfortable bedrooms each had a private bath and terrace with beautiful views of the Caribbean. The well-equipped kitchen and gas grill allowed us to prepare fabulous meals, which we enjoyed on the two outdoor dining areas. And the comfortable living room allowed us to enjoy quality family time in the evenings. There was a constant breeze, so there was no need for air conditioning, and there were no mosquitoes. During the day, the Whipple whaler allowed us to explore neighboring islands, although our favorite snorkeling spot was right on the island at Diamond Reef. (We even saw a stingray and a nurse shark from the shore, before getting our feet wet!). With no stores or restaurants on Great Camanoe, the home and the island were extremely private. Our teenagers even managed to survive without wifi (the home does have internet access), because they were able to get their wifi fix on daily outings to Marina Cay and Trellis Bay. For those who want to get away from it all, be close to nature, and experience the Caribbean the way it used to be, Stargazer is an excellent choice.

Exquisite, breathtaking and wonderful! The pictures do not portray this home to its fullest advantage. The panoramic view is spellbinding, we didn't want to leave to enjoy the BVI's great restaurants (Da Loose Mongoose was great, Marina Cay had the best lobster around!) snorkeling and beautiful beaches on the surrounding islands. The home is extremely comfortable. Although we were only a family of three, the layout of the house provides great privacy for multiple guests complemented by the beautiful communal outdoor dining areas, patios and living room. Each guest room having it's own bath was very convenient after a day of snorkeling. The property was immaculate with all amenities you need including a fully stocked kitchen. For new visitors with children, we would suggest you bring along your favorite DVD movies for a few evenings. The house is located at the top of the island, the drive up the mountain is not for the faint of heart but added to the adventure. The car provided is much needed, however the hike up/down the mountain was a great workout each day. The owners answered all our questions as we planned the vacation which was very helpful since we were not familiar with Great Camanoe specifically. The Baths on Virgin Gorda are a must for everyone, we took the ferry from Trellis bay which was very convenient. I'd recommend to anyone wanting a fantastic BVI vacation experience...

Exceptional Island Home With Heavenly Views! Exceeded Our Expectations!

It has been 13 long days since we were your guests at Star Gazer.
Not a day has gone by that we have not spoken of our "favorite vacation"!
All I have to do is remember the view from your beautiful home and peace
returns to my heart and soul. Every day I am planning our return!

Our children and grandchildren want to join us! In fact everyone who sees
our photographs and listens to our wonderful memories wants to
visit Great Camanoe and stay in your precious Star Gazer!

This was our fifth trip to the Brittish Virgin Islands. We sailed twice, stayed
on Virgin Gorda twice and finally found Star Gazer! We remember
being anchored and sleeping beneath Great Camanoe and looking up at
the house lights at night that lit up the island. I dreamed of what the view
must be like from way up above.

Our dreams, even our photos cannot portray the exceptional expanse of
beauty that is before you from Star Gazer. We enjoyed the most
magnificent sunrises, sunsets, rain storms off in the distance, double
rainbows and the light of the full moon and the stars!

The Star Gazer sets so high up on the island that the moon illuminates
the ocean in ways that take your breath away! The clouds that roll past
the amazing light of the moon create an amazing show as well. And the
stars.... when the moon was hidden completely the stars opened up
another realm of beauty that overwhelmed us again!

Each day we set off for adventure, discovery and island hopping
in the "Whipple Whaler"! Evening we would relax and sit for hours
as the light of the sun went down and the sky filled with the most
amazing color. Then the light of the moon and stars amazed us
the rest of the night, while ships and boats slid across the shiney,
smooth, beautiful ocean.

The wrap around outdoor living space that you have created is
so exceptional. The furnishings are so comfortable. The kitchen
is so very well equipped. The art, the decor, the quality, are all
just icing on the cake!

We have attached some of our favorite photos, (we took over
300), you may use them on your website if you wish.

Andy and Mellini were very helpful and informative. We
enjoyed hiking down in the morning to snorkle by Ulla's bench
and observe the fish having their breakfast in the morning
light. The beach on Great Camanoe by the dock was
beautiful too!

Thank you for a week in Paradise! Thank you for a week
filled with relaxation, adventure, privacy, nature, sunshine,
breath taking !

Heaven is in BVI

My husband and I recently spent a week at this magnificent hilltop home gazing at the stars, the moon, the sun dappled ocean and many of the smaller islands that make up the BVI. The home could not be more beautifully appointed, and each of the three bedrooms are very private and have their own full bath and covered deck. While the home comes with its own 4-wheel drive vehicle, a challenging but doable daily exercise can be a walk down and back up the hill with a swim in the gorgeous aquamarine ocean at the bottom of the hill. Many, many snorkeling spots, a small grocery store, two very adequate restaurants on two tiny islands each just a 5 minute boat ride away (a 17 foot Boston Whaler also comes with the house), and the entire array of luxury yachts that frequent the BVI were more than enough diversion for us, although the house's many ample decks with a variety of views were our favorite spots for reading while we sipped our morning coffee, our afternoon glass of wine or our evening nightcap. We cooked many of our meals in the full kitchen and consumed them in either the breakfast nook or the full dining area which are both open air. I particularly loved awakening in the morning to the soft bleating of the island's wild goats which we saw very fleetingly on the road down the hill before they scampered away into the woods. This was a very memorable, relaxing vacation at a magical place.

Breathtaking Caribbean Views!

5 of 5
Submitted: January 15, 2012 Stayed: December 2011
My husband and I spent nine wonderful days on Camanoe Island for Christmas this past year. The Stargazer is an amazing house with sweeping views of the Caribbean. Since the winds were too high for us to explore by boat, we were able to take advantage of the expansive deck which provided unbelievable views from every vantage point. We spent many hours relaxing on the deck and watching the different boats and planes. Just when you think the view can't get any better, it's evening, and you understand why the House is called Stargazer!

The recently renovated house is clean and well furnished. The Suzuki SUV that was provided with our rental was perfect for the adventurous drive up and down from the house. We were able to purchase groceries and necessities at Beef Island, which is only ten minutes by boat. We took the boat to Marina Cay and had a delicious lunch at Pusser's Restaurant. I took advantage of the calm waters in the Cay to do a little snorkeling. We also ventured to Scrub Island Resort Restaurant for lunch with a wonderful couple we met on the island. Conveniently, both of these destinations are only a five minute boat ride away.

We would highly recommend this house. The Owner was very helpful and answered all of our questions. We've vacationed in the BVI for the past nine years and have stayed on Camanoe Island before. However, we have never seen a more stunning view of the Caribbean. You will not be disappointed!
