Beautiful Creative Retreat

My husband and I were looking for a relaxing escape to focus on our creative projects and we found just that at Whispering Springs. It was a perfect oasis, far enough removed from the outside world to allow you to forget the hectic pace and constant buzz of information of life. After a 10-15 minute drive in on the gravel road, we came onto the beautiful property. The large great room where we spent most of our time was just perfect. Windows onto the field surrounded it and there were many art tables where I could set up multiple projects at once. My husband worked in another corner on songwriting. The kitchen was really well-stocked with utensils and appliances. We packed all of our food from home and left the property only once the entire week we were there. We really enjoyed visiting Gassaway, a very small town where we learned about the area from some of the shopkeepers, like John at John's Department Store. Everyone was unbelievably friendly. We had lunch at the Red Rooster in Gassaway that was very tasty and our waiter, Jason, was unbelievably nice. We drove to see Sutton Lake, but didn't end up canoeing or swimming.

Since it was so hot during our visit, we only took a couple of short hikes on the property, but I'd recommend getting more directions from Karen, the owner, if long hikes on the property are what you're looking for. The water was running in the creeks and there were small waterfalls. We enjoyed watching the animals through the windows while we worked inside. The deer and otters (we think) were always walking around just outside the door. There were also wasps that came out around the deck in the late afternoon. We were there in the heat of the summer so we used the window air conditioner regularly with fans and we were very comfortable.

Overall, this was a dream vacation and the space and property made possible our goals of getting away, clearing our mind and being creative. Karen's art supplies around the cabin saved me a few times when I needed something I'd forgotten to pack and the great collection of art and nature books on the shelves provided inspiration for both my husband and I. Everything was kept in pristine condition and was completely comfortable. Karen was very helpful and provided all information you could need. She clearly takes great care in providing a wonderful experience for her guests and it shows in all the details around the property. We would highly recommend Whispering Springs!

Lovely, private, nestled in nature

My husband and I just spent a week at this cabin with our dogToby. It is a beautiful spot, very private and quiet. The cabin is perfect for two. The great room has lots of glass doors and windows for light and views. The bed is in the great room, along with the dining table and chairs and a couch. There is another small sitting room off the great room. There is a window air conditioner in that room and then fans throughout the cabin. The days were very hot while we were there, so we did need to run the ac in the afternoons and use the fans to spread the cool around. The mornings and evenings, though, were delightful and we spent them on the outside porches/decks. We slept with the windows open with the fans, which was very nice. The large, green meadows were wonderful and our dog had great fun chasing balls and frisbees. We had some nice walks around the property. If you do bring a dog, be alert that there are many deer around the woods and meadows in the early mornings and evenings, so if you have a dog that might chase, you'll want to secure him/her. The only disappointing part of our trip was that there was no water in the creeks anywhere on the property...completely dry...no waterfalls or streams. The pond is low, and is off limits because of the habitat, so there was no water for us or our dog to enjoy. That was something we didn't realize could happen, so just be aware of that seasonal aspect if the water is something important to your stay. We did venture out to find a nearby canoe put-in where Toby enjoyed the water. And we also drove up to Sutton Lake, which is really beautiful. No pets allowed there in the park area, but there is a swimming area and small marina. The cabin has a nice kitchen and is stocked with everything you might need. We enjoyed our stay at the cabin exploring that entire area of WV.
Owner's Response: It was so unfortunate that your stay coincided with the hottest, driest week we have had in many years. Normally because of our mountain breezes and proximity of the creeks to our house, our summer guests have much success with the continued use of our ceiling fans and the occasional use of a small window unit. With the broadcast reports of excessive heat warnings and health risks the morning of your arrival, I was very happy we were able to secure a new larger air conditioner unit and install it the same day just in time to insure your safety and comfort. For those guests who prefer sleeping with an air conditioner in the same room, the living room is equipped with a very comfortable high quality queen size luxury futon mattress.

Water flow is determined by seasonal conditions. Yet we have never seen it as dry as you witnessed. What you experienced was truly a rare event. The water flow does slow down in the summer, leaving lower levels of water in the creeks yet never less then 3 or 4ft within our natural pool. March through early June has the greatest flow, though a good steady rain in any season will provide greater intensity. After your departure the rains came and the creeks were quite active. Though you did not get to enjoy the cooling flow of our waters, I am so glad you enjoyed our canoe at nearby Elk River and Sutton Lake and found pleasure in what our haven and private wildlife refuge has to offer. Thank you for your stay! I will mention seasonal changes in our property listing and include it in our guest information book.

Away From it All

My family and I enjoyed staying at Whispering Springs. Our three boys enjoyed the kids corner in the great room. They had a great time drawing, doing crafts, and reading books. There was plenty to do on the rainy day that we stayed at the cabin. The screened in porch was a great place to eat breakfast. We watched wild turkeys and deer graze on the grassy hillside. At night the frogs in the pond where a peaceful sound that put you to sleep after a long day. We enjoyed watching the moon rise over the mountain while laying in bed. Also, the jacuzzi was relaxing to be in after a long day of walking and visiting surrounding sites. Having a 4 x 4 vehicle is also important. There are some steep hills, and slightly bumpy roads getting there to the cabin. This cabin is secluded, so plan on a little longer trip to the grocery store, etc. However, it is an enjoyable ride into town. It was nice to visit a town where the people of WV live. This is not a tourist town, but there are many things to do within an hours drive of the cabin. If you want to be in the heart of WV, this is the cabin to stay. Great for families that enjoy art and education.

I spent this past weekend at the wonderful Whispering Springs Haven Retreat. It was amazing. I am an artist at heart but have not had much time to focus on my artwork and crafts due to a hectic schedule. I scheduled time at the retreat to try and catch up on some of my art projects. I experienced and accomplished so much more. The views were breathtaking and the rental property had everything I needed. The layout inspired creativity and ignited my artistic passion again. With the renewed energy and focus I began working on my small business once more. Something I had neglected for quite some time. Karen was so helpful and nice. I am telling all of my friends and we plan to return soon.
