Photos and Description of the Port Douglas vacation apartment rental
Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Attached Unit, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)

Lagoons at Port Douglas is a relaxed apartment hotel resort. This 1 or 2 bedroom swim-out apartment (depending on whether or not the adjoining studio (Home Away # 911134) is rented with the 1 bed apartment) can cater for couples or families/groups of 4-6 looking for affordable self-catering holidays. It is situated on Port Douglas Road which is on the road leading into Port Douglas off of the Captain Cook coastal highway.

The resort has 6 extensive outdoor pools, 4 of which are approx. 40m in length and is just 5 minutes walk from 4 mile beach at Port Douglas in far north, tropical Queensland.

The 1 bed apartment option includes a living room with kitchen, bathroom with shower, main bedroom with kingsize bed and a den/study that has a convertible sofa bed that can sleep two. The living room leads onto a patio with table and loungers from which you can slip into one of those 40m long swimming pools.

When the adjoining deluxe studio (Home Away # 911134) of the same unit is also rented out, the 1 bed becomes a 2 bed apartment configuration, sleeping a maximum of 6 people, with the studio also leading onto an identical patio and the same swimming pool.

The studio is effectively a private, self contained unit that can accomodate a couple or an older child with a close friend, whilst two younger children (as an example of what we have done) can sleep on the convertible sofa bed in the study area close by their parents in the 1 bed apartment.

Please specify whether you wish to book as the 1 bed or 2 bed apartment option when enquiring about availability.

Note also that both patios have child proof locks on the gates that access the swimming pool.

There is also an outdoor BBQ and Cabana in the central pool area.

There are reasonably priced supermarkets and shops a short drive away (1-2 miles) from the resort, where you can buy all the food and supplies you need for the duration of your stay.

However, there is also an excellent wide range of restaurants and bars in Port Douglas itself which is just a 5 min. drive away, or you can catch the local shuttle which runs from the hotel next door every 15 mins.

The welcoming staff in Lagoons resort foyer can assist in booking any of the numerous trips available in and around Port Douglas. A wide selection of literature is available at the tour desk.

We have always had lovely family holidays here and the following excursions are amongst those available :

Visits to Cairns Zoo (with all the fabulous native Australian wildlife) both day or night (around the campfire BBQ).

Feed the kangaroos and see the koalas, birds, snakes and crocodiles at ''Wildlife Habitat'' (previously Rainforest Habitat) just 10 mins. drive away.

Don't miss the legendary (& amusing) Cane Toad Races at the family friendly Iron Bar pub/restaurant on Macrossan Street, two or three times weekly.

Walks and tours of the world renowned Daintree Rainforest and Mossman Gorge.

Venture inland to the Atherton Tablelands or further North to Cooktown.

Snorkelling or scuba diving on the Barrier Reef with Quicksilver (amongst other operators).

Outer reef cruises are also possible.

Take a trip on Kuranda scenic railway and cable car over the rainforest canopy to visit the craft markets, butterfly or bird sanctuaries.

Spend a half day visiting ''Tjapukai'' the traditional cultural aboriginal village.

Port Douglas river cruises offer the opportunity to view wild crocodiles and sea eagles in their natural habitat.

Go hot air balloning, parasailing or sea fishing.

At the weekend take the old steam train into Port Douglas, an exciting 20 min. ride for the children (& 'young at heart' Dads...) alike !

About Neil Lawrence

We are a married couple with three daughters aged 17, 11 & 7 years old.

We have travelled extensively together visiting many different locations worldwide.

We have always thoroughly enjoyed visiting Port Douglas since our first visit there in summer 2005.

Neil Lawrence purchased this apartment in 2006
Why Neil Lawrence chose Port Douglas

Australia is a wonderful, unique country and we were attracted to Port Douglas because it is not too big and relatively unspoilt. We find that it is not over commercialized and neither is it too crowded.

Port Douglas' centre has many attractive restaurants with craft and art galleries.

You can also enjoy a drink at the traditional Australian pubs and bars on Macrossan Street where you can watch rugby, cricket or Aussie rules matches.

We have always had fabulous family holidays here and the children have enjoyed and learnt a lot from the many excursions listed in our opening description and shown on the map. We love the marvellous Australian wildlife, countryside and coastline.

Had a fantastic stay in this beautiful apartment very quiet & relaxing we were able to cook in the apartment or have a BBQ in a pleasent area, very tropical location and our stay of 10 days went far too quickly. Neil and the manager Murray were extremely helpful with our requirements and prompt to answer our emails. Would highly recommend families and coulples to take up this offer of accomadation.

We had a relaxing, wonderful stay at Oaks Lagoon. The apartment is just as described. I could not believe that I could swim from my patio; it was so delightful, and the water temperature was perfect. There are seven long, narrow pools. The apartment provided all that we needed for our 3 day stay. The owner was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with. He said that the staff would take care of us and that all would be ready when we arrived. He was absolutely correct. The staff was very helpful in many ways. We enjoyed cooking on the grill in the common area. The landscaping was a tropical paradise. The apartment accommodations met our expectations and were comfortable. The only negative for us was that it was a very long walk to town, but most of the nicer places did seem to be away from town. There are a few close places to eat, and the beach is a 5-10 walk. Depending on the time of year, you may not be able to get into the water at the beach, but that would be true anyplace in the tropics, not just at Four Mile Beach. It was a surprise to me. There was no free WiFi, but the internet charges were the least expensive of anyplace we stayed in our 5 week trip. There were only two of us in the apartment, but it could accommodate more people or the studio next door could be rented. If I ever go back to Port Douglas, I would definitely stay here again.

Great Place for a Family Stay

Our family of five stayed here for four nights in late June. This was our first VRBO booking. It was also the first VRBO booking for the unit owners. Neil was very responsive. The unit was clean and roomy. We had all of the the comforts of home including the equipped kitchen and washer/dryer. The unit has a bedroom with a king size bed, a bedroom with 2 twin beds and another room with a sleeper sofa. When we arrived the sofa was already made up as a bed. The kitchen is open to the living room. The living room has a sofa and chairs for watching tv. There is a second tv in the king bedroom. TV channels are a bit limited, but if you are a rugby fan there always seemed to be at least three channels of rugby. I would much prefer CNN.

The kitchen was well equipped. We cooked several dinners at home. By USA standards restaurants are expensive in Australia. We did have a nice dinner at the Beach Shack that is less than a five minute car ride away. There is a Coles grocery in Port Douglas about 5 minutes from the unit. The "downtown" are also has numerous shops, bars and restaurants.

The pool was a bit cool during the Australian winter. Our kids, ages 7, 9 and 14, liked the pool connected directly to the patio, but didn't swim much. The complex itself also seemed well maintained.

We only went to the beach one day. It is a 10 minute walk. It was nice, wide and sandy. The surf was fairly calm. The water was not clear. I saw photos of clear water from the same area so it may have to do with the time of year?

We spent one day going to the GBR, one day in the rain forest and one day at he zoo & aboriginal cultural center. We selected to go on the Calypso to the reef. I thought the Quicksilver looked a bit like a zoo. We had maybe 40 people on the boat and had plenty of room to spread out. The kids really enjoyed snorkeling. The water was 72 degrees. That is really cold to me.

For the rain forest tour we booked with Tony's Tropical Tours. It was a long 10 hour day, but really worth it. Our guide Chris was great with the kids. We all learned so much more than if we did it on our own.

We went to the Cairns Tropical Zoo. The kids were able to hold Koalas for photos and hand feed kangaroos - a highlight of our 2 weeks in OZ.

After the zoo we had lunch and then headed to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park just outside Cairns. We attended several shows and lectures. The kids even learned to throw a boomarang and a spea
