Spanish Translation at Bottom:

The Beautiful Little Tiled House: Beautiful tiled floor and bright multi-colored walls make this a happy place. WiFi on site. Located on a secondary lot behind the locally famous Muul Ha restaurant (currently closed however). The lake is very long and flows northward out of the ground from a 1/4 mile south so the water is extremely crystal clear. The water is warm and feels like you are swimming in soft water. The public access to the beach is at 3 minute walk from the house through the Muul Ha Restaurant.

The lake front is also unique in that it has no beach to speak of. The grass or the lawn grows right down to the water. Very old mangroves grow along the shore and exist under the water making fun places to stand and play in the water (you'll want to scout these out before diving).

A few hundred meters south is a boating facility with all kind of watercraft for rent (Seadoo, kayak, hobbycat, canoe pontoon etc...)

Yvon, Caretaker and 1/2 Owner: Yvon is a professional musician who retired in Mexico.10 years ago. He is from Quebec City, Canada.

He is handy and keeps the place running, cleaned, and repaired and can be easily contacted by phone if any troubles arise. He lives in the studio apartment in the same building and can usually be contacted just by knocking on the door. He can also direct you to the nearest great and inexpensive English-speaking restaurant about 5 blocks away, the hairdresser, the hardware store, the video game/internet shops, grocery stores, the city 'beach' (to the left), and places in Chetumal.

Yvon also plays a wonderfully classical guitar and can play and teach all kinds of music. He could probably be induced to playing and singing a bit around the campfire. Leonard is the other half owner who lives in Spokane and has been involved with the Club Yebo Motel in Playa del Carmen for 20 years.

The house has 4 safes for the protection of your valuables.

The Village of Xul Ha: It's is a sweet little town. Only 3,000 people, all the property was originally ejido land meaning it was originally divided up for the natives in the area so it is minimally foreign and largely undeveloped. So only a few non-Mexicans live there mostly large fancy homes on the waterfront. Right across the road from us is a new beautiful modern home owned by a Chetumal University Architecture professor. Most of the homes in Xul Ha are handsomely if not simply decorated. You will want to see the Xmas lights decorations...

At night there's a street light on almost any corner and couples, people, children, and dogs walk around freely. Motorized traffic is minimal. The highway goes by on western edge of town so it's all very quiet. There's a public basketball court and more restaurants over on the highway.

Bacalar is only 10 miles away if you'd like more variety in shopping and restaurant choice,

Chetumal has a wonderful Mardi Gras-like parade in February.

Picture above is Yvon, co-owner and caretaker of casa mull ha who lives in a studio attached to the main house. Yvon is a professional musician and an excellent gardner which you will enjoy upon your visit.

Leonard purchased this house in 2011

The property is adjacent to the Muul Ha Restaurant from whom Yvon rented a cabin just across the ravine/suspension bridge. When the property went up for sale, Yvon was encouraged to buy.

The unique benefit is that you get stay in the small lake town of Xul Ha (population ~ 3,000). Just big enough for basic amenities but small enough to walk around and enjoy the people and the tidy little houses and yards. You're also in a great location for exploring Belize, Chetumal, the Spanish fort and restaurant ceynote in Bacalar, and Mayan ruins to the west.

If you're looking to experience a Mexican town without all the trappings of tourism, this is a perfect destination. The casa is more spaceous than it appears in the pictures - clean and comfortable with a well-stocked kitchen. The many windows let in plenty of light and fresh air with lovely views. It sits on a large grassy lot which is nicely landscaped. We loved the state-of-the-art chicken house and were sorry to have missed the new baby checks beginning to hatch just as we left. Our favorite spot was the little cobblestone patio with a flower garden in front and overlooking the lake. It's an easy walk down to the dock for swimming and basking. Our host, Yvon, was charming and very helpful - we would have been at a loss without him!

The town has numerous tiny stores that carry some household and canned goods, snacks and limited but very nice fresh produce. For any actual cooking, though, it's necessary to stock up in Chetumal. The only restaurant of note, Charales, is within easy walking distance from the casa and, fortunately, the food is excellent! The menu consists of light Mexican fare, a fish soup (that we didn't try but is said to be renowned), and a ceviche which is possibly the best I've had. The owner, Jose, speaks English fairly well and was very friendly and helpful to us as well.

There are lots of things to see and do within driving distance of Xul Ha. We opted not to rent a car but would recommend doing so. Depending on taxis or other transportation involved a fair bit of walking and they're not always available where you need them. The language barrier was also somewhat detrimental. I speak enough Spanish to get by in resort areas, but it was of little help here.

many thanks to Leonard for the great communication before our trip and to Yvon for providing us with a unique and very pleasant stay!
Owner's Response: So far in our few months of operation everyone has enjoyed the experience. I have been coming to Mexico for 20 years and still get by with a version of charades much to the amusement of the Spanish'speaking host. Sometimes I will just pick an item on the menu and be pleasantly suprised. Yvon is from Quebec and I think speaks better French than English but his Spanish is pretty good as he lived here now for years and is always ready to help. Having destinations written our for taxis is also a pretty good idea.

What a great place to stay, in a wonderful little Mexican town that is as yet unmarred by the ravages of the big city. (yet the big city is very close for those in need of the Wallmarts and Cosco's)

I enjoyed being so close to the beautiful 'Lagoon of 7 colors' and we rented some kayaks and enjoyed the peaceful lake.

It is very comfortable and easy to find.
The guest cottage is being run by a very nice guitar playing French Canadian who has lived in the area for over ten years.

The neighbors are very friendly, the principal of the local school owns a restaurant which is open weekends, and there is a ranch type setting on the edge of town which is owned by a rancher and his family from Arizona. We went on a great hilly trail ride on great horses to the lagoon. We ate a great meal there, too.
A really great experience for our family, and I look forward to doing it again next year.

Owner's Response: Yvon and I thank you for your kind review.

I'm up here in Spokane and did not even know that the Muul Ha Restaurant had reopened. I'm glad it has because Don Concho is a sweet host, the swimming pool is a great place for the kids to play while you finish dinner, the view of the lake from the multi-story restaurant is fabulous, and his very large grass lawn fronting the lake with it's docks for swimming are all very inviting.
Thanks for the review, Leonard (and Yvon)

A piece of real Mexico

We had a wonderful stay with a charming and generous host, Mr Pepin. The lake is amazing and the surroundings tranquile. The village is genuine and poor which only ads to feeling of seeing the real Mexico. We took the localbus to Chetumal a couple of times, a city well worth visiting and it was relatively easy to move back and forward from the house. But we also rented a car in order to travel further to the more isolated archeological sites around Chetumal. Don't miss out on this stay!
Owner's Response: Leonard, the emailer and Yvon, the caretaker and entertainer, are both glad you enjoyed your stay. Some day I'll visit Sweden and see for myself the happiest people on the planet and maybe sample your wonderful health care system. At least Mexico has minimal health care for everyone and I've always been struck by how happy they seem in spite of less material wealth. I think Mexicans make up for it with happy healthy families. Xul Ha I think looks poorer than it really is because of the pot-holed streets. But they got new street lights last year and a new streets are going in as we speak. Actually, I was pretty impressed with Xul Ha when I first saw it with the high proportion of nicer homes and maintained lawns.

On my last trip, we visited the museum inside the old Spanish fort in Bacalar which would be very interesting for both kids and adults. In Chetumal, we went to the Zoological Park which everyone would get a kick out of and the Mayan History museum also very well done for adults and older kids. Next year it will be some of the ruins to the west a few kilometers.
