A rare gem in Santa Monica Canyon. Families and friends can stay together yet have complete privacy- Two completely separate bungalows (each includes bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, wood burning fireplace, and large flatscreen TVs). The romantic well appointed bungalows are joined by an exterior stairway in a tropical garden, and share plenty of outdoor space -- two decks, one for lounging in the evening by outdoor chandelier, and one for cooking and dining alfresco -- plus an intimate outdoor room and a hot water outdoor shower.

A beautiful hillside garden filled with ginger, birds of paradise, fragrant vines and colorful flowers is all yours. Unobstructed Canyon View upstairs offer dramatic sunsets and expansive Canyon vistas. The private Garden downstairs has romantic chandelier lighting.

This unique private setting is ideally suited for two couples traveling together, or parents traveling with grown children.

Amenities include wifi throughout. Upstairs there is a 42' flatscreen TV in the living room, a well equipped galley kitchen with a modern glass dining table that seats 6 comfortably. The master bedroom with king size bed has a 32' TV, its own private bath, and a large hardwood desk suitable for your computer.

Downstairs there is a convenient kitchenette with gas burners, coffee maker, refrigerator and toaster oven-perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails and snacks. Lounge on the enormous sofa, or the Eames lounger in front of the 60' TV streaming NETFLIX on demand. Just outside the french doors is a covered outdoor room and a hot outdoor shower in a bamboo grove.

About the area:

There are five excellent restaurants just two blocks away. It is lovely to be able to walk to a delicious local restaurant, the wide sand beach, or to shopping on Montana Avenue or Pacific Palisades for the outdoor Farmers Market.

The Annenberg Beach House is also nearby, offering all of the amenities of your own private club: a world class swimming pool with comfortable lounge chairs, lockers, swimming classes, yoga classes, a nice restaurant, a chldren's splash-fountain area, volleyball and stand-up paddle boards. It's new, immaculate and architectually pleasing. And offers plenty of parking for a small fee.

Biking:

You can rent bicycles at the beach and make use of the bike path that runs all the way down through the scene in Venice, the Marina Del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach to the Palos Verdes Penninsula 30 miles away.

Hiking:

We are right on the edge of the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains which are loaded with excellent hiking and mountain bike trails. And wildlife. Most people do not realize that Metropolitan Los Angeles is bisected by a large mountain range.

DAY TRIPS:

You can drive north 10 miles to Malibu to watch the surfers and beyond to Ventura (great antiquing) and then on to Santa Barbara for brunch and to tour the botanical gardens. What else? Palm Springs is two hours away, Joshua Tree is two hours, Mexico is three hours, skiing at Mt.Baldy is two hours, Catalina Island is two hours by ferry from San Pedro.

Art & Culture:

The Richard Meier Getty Musuem is 10 minutes away and the Getty Antiquities Museum on the Pacific Coast Highway is just five minutes away. It's a great place for lunch and to tour the Mediterranean gardens. LACMA is a dynamic cutting-edge museum well worth the 20 minute drive. And don't forget to buy tickets for a performance at Frank Gehry's Disney Concert Hall downtown (20 minutes if no traffic). Also downtown you can catch a Lakers, Dodgers or Kings game.

There are polo matches at the Will Rogers estate on Sunday afternoons. Take a picnic lunch and sit on the lawns under the Eucalyptus trees.

Shopping:

The Santa Monica Place Mall & Outdoor Promenade has something for everyone and it's just a mile away -- many theaters, restaurants, shopping of all kinds, street performers, yoga, pilates and fitness studios, bookstores, people watching and a world-famous outdoor Farmer's Market on Saturday and Wednesday mornings. DO NOT MISS THE FARMER'S MARKET!

And plenty of surfing - we will leave a board for you, and the hot outdoor shower beckons on your return.

My family and I stayed at this property for five days in January and the property was every bit as enchanting as the photos suggest. Spacious, spotless, and charmingly appointed, it was lovely to wake up to sweeping mountain views in the morning, and to go to bed at night with a backdrop of twinkling lights dotting the canyon. Our teenaged sons were delighted with the 'split' accommodation, affording them (and us) some privacy and independence, and our host went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed to be comfortable. Less than half an hour from the airport and to downtown LA, I would highly recommend this property to anyone considering a stay in Los Angeles. Santa Monica is a convenient base from which to explore, and a haven of fresh air and tranquility at the end if a busy traveller's day. Our stay was brilliant!

Canyon Bliss

I had visited los angeles many times but had previously never discovered the canyon lifestyle until i had the opportunity to stay in this magical bungalow. Conveniently located at the southern end of the santa monica bluffs, it is close to all the great shopping and food but once you arrive 'home' you feel like a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Nestled in the lush vegetation, you can smell the ocean breeze, hear the cheerful chirping of crickets and watch the beautiful sunsets over the ocean. I curled up with a glass of wine and a good book and felt more relaxed than I could remember. The next morning, while my husband went surfing, I strolled up through the neighborhood for a comfortable hike in the nearby Santa Monica mountains, knowing we had found the most perfect place to stay...

So near and yet so far

I walked every day up the steps from the charming, hidden apartment (more like a house), along the beautiful Palisades Park overlooking the sea, and all the way to the Santa Monica pier, to watch the activity there. On my way back, I walked along the beach to watch vollyball and surfers, and stopped for breakfast at the Annenberg Beach House. Sometimes I walked back into the canyon to check out the wonderful old houses nestled there. It's easy to get to the center of Santa Monica with all the bars and restaurants, but you'll want to stay hidden away in this wonderful, comfortable, completely furnished little home. The owners have extremely good taste: simple and modern (lots of Eames furniture), and are charming and helpful if you need to call on them. But you won't! You will be too happy and comfortable and serene!

Never wanted to leave....

Santa Monica Canyon had always attracted me for many reasons. I knew that
Greta Garbo had stayed there with her German emigre moviemaker friends, and
that Igor Stravinsky, Thomas Mann, Aldous Huxley were residents at one time, not to mention the great British writer Christopher Isherwood. Glamourous! The reason these illustrious folk lived in this neighborhood is obvious on first sight: wide beaches, the glittering ocean with waves perfect for body surfing, its position in a sycamore-filled valley giving it an intimate and detached quality, as though the metropolis hardly existed, and the majesty of the mountains rising from the sea. When I got the chance to stay here I jumped at the opportunity. The accommodations were luxurious, with beautiful artist-designed furniture, some antiques with a history, the charming little kitchen where I could do anything from make a dinner for 8 or just heat up coffee in the microwave, the decks that brought the outdoors in, classic California living at its best! And to top it off, I fell in love with my partner while living here! Who could ask for anything more? Too bad there aren't ten stars.

Exclusive and Authentic Artistic Retreat

I was lucky enough to stay in this authentic, soulful, artistic hideaway in the heart of los angeles' exclusive santa monica canyon for an extended stay. i loved every minute of it. walking and biking distance to downtown santa monica, montana avenue and stones throw to the beach and bike path - i never felt hemmed in and was happy to not drive for days. i miss the northern light and gentle lush canyon views out the large windows. and i remember fondly the feeling of being tucked away amongst the writers and artists who've filled this canyon for so many decades - it inspired me to be creative. felt like i belonged in the close-knit neighborhood that also boast two pretty great italian restaurants a short stroll away. not to mention the art and style of the all the decor - clean, understated, comfortable, yet totally refined.
