LOCATION:

The River House is located just 10.5 miles north of Gardiner, Montana, the only year around entrance to Yellowstone Park. We sit in the upper Yellowstone River Valley just south of Yankee Jim Canyon and north of Corwin Springs, MT. The River House is a fully equipped but rustic home in a country setting with neighbors across grassy pastures just off Hwy 89 South. It is just 10 minutes to the Park entrance but still far enough to be away from Park crowds at night. Livingston, Montana is 42 miles north and Bozeman, Montana, our closest airport is just 90 minutes away.

OVERVIEW:

The River House was originally a log cabin that had a master bedroom suite and other bedroom extensions added later. It is now a rustic and spacious home situated right on the edge of the Yellowstone River. The house offers 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, a fully equipped kitchen, large dining room, family room, living room, 2 large porches, and a laundry (a washer and dryer and indoor space to hang wet clothes). It has a large fenced yard in the back and a large front yard with mature trees and landscaping. The home is comfortable, in a lovely setting with the river flowing outside. The home is away from crowds while convenient to the Park and town.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

There is a king size bed in the master bedroom suite and sliding glass doors which open onto the deck overlooking the river. The other 3 bedrooms have queen size beds and there is a pullout sofa bed in the front living room. The master bedroom suite has its own bathroom with a spacious shower and the other bedrooms share a bathroom with a tub/shower.

The kitchen is modern and comfortable for family cooking and easy conversation with folks seated in the open dining room. There is a large refrigerator with icemaker and a new and gas range with double electric ovens. Conveniently located out the kitchen door is a large gas barbeque. The dining room table will seat ten to twelve comfortably. A fireplace in the dining room is ideal for chilly mornings. The front living room is spacious and comfortably seats 10+. In addition, there is a family room with a view of the river and a large-screen TV with a DVD player, Satellite TV, Ipod dock and CD player, as well as books, games. There is wireless Internet for your convenience though service can be occasionally intermittent due to weather patterns and living in the river valley. The family room opens out to the back deck overlooking the Yellowstone River and the private back yard. Huge cottonwood trees shade the back yard in the afternoon. The river’s edge is just steps away from the fenced back yard and there are several good fishing holes within close proximity. Or one can doze on a hammock and listen to the birds and the river.

The large grassy area in front of the house is perfect for yard games, and with a tire swing on a tree and a wooden bench swing on the front porch. There’s plenty of room for running and playing. Plenty of parking space is available.

ACTIVITIES:

The house is ten minutes from Yellowstone Park's Northwest entrance with the magnificent Mammoth Hot Springs. For fishermen, the house has fishing in the river below and lies within twelve miles of the Yellowstone and Gardiner river confluence. Several more Yellowstone River public fishing accesses are within a few miles. Extensive National Forest hiking trails are nearby. Yellowstone National Park hiking trails are within a few minutes of driving from house. Also within a short drive from house are river rafting, kayaking, fishing, swimming, picnicking, horseback riding, shopping, spectacular wildlife viewing and all of Yellowstone's breathtaking landscapes with Mammoth Hot Springs a twenty minute drive away and wolves, moose, buffalo, bear, and countless more native and iconic wildlife not far away with the famous Yellowstone Lamar valley an hour drive away.

For the more adventurous there is, of course, nearby access to numerous overnight hikes and pack-trip trailheads to gorgeous sites all over the Yellowstone and Gallatin area.

There are attractive views from the property and a picnic table in the backyard. At the back of house there is a view of the river and a sage covered hill behind. Especially at dusk and dawn, the river can draw wildlife that can be observed from within the house or from the backyard and deck. A pair of eagles fish in the river below and elk, deer, and antelope may sometimes be seen across the river.

The house is ideally located for fun and access to the whole of Yellowstone and Paradise Valley, with all the area has to offer and direct river access. It is comfortable indoors and provides a peaceful and rustic Montana experience away from the tourist crowds.

About Sarah B. Stewart

I am a wildlife photographer and love animals and observing nature. This house is where I would like to live full time. I look right out onto the river and hear it all summer when the windows are open. There are a variety of trees all around the house and the place is rich with bird song and animal life. The house is surrounded by nature and yet it is within ten minutes of town and Yellowstone Park. The views are lovely here and the house is older, cared for, and comfortable. I love to watch wildlife from the family room or the master bedroom. It is beautiful and peaceful.

Lovely Stay at the River House

My family and I spent a week at River House and and were very pleased with it. The plentiful places to sit inside and the delightful outside porch overlooking the Yellowstone River, along with the really great kitchen and dining room, and comfortable bedrooms, made it a very good jumping off place for visits to Yellowstone National Park as well as exploration of some of the mountain roads around. The children loved the swings made from old tires, and they enjoyed paddling at the edge of the pond. Gardner, the nearby town, has a good supermarket, a couple of coffee shops and a few fairly good gift shops. All in all we found the house and its setting a relaxing place to be and much enjoyed our time there.

Response to review by guests staying 7/24-31

Submitted: August 22, 2011 Stayed: July 2011
We are so sorry that the 7/24-31, 2011 guests did not have a fully enjoyable stay at the River House. We really love this home and of course want all our guests enjoy it as much as we do. We were in the house the weekend before these guests and that was the first we knew of the wireless not coming through in all rooms. It does come into every room but one in other seasons. We guess that the foliage must block it in the summer. We are so sorry that we did not know. The guests over the previous weeks had not said anything. However, when we were just there, it was working for us in some rooms, and we did always have Internet access. We updated on VRBO about the imperfect access as soon as we realized the problem, but assumed that it was good enough in that it does come in in some rooms and no one else had mentioned a problem.
The dishwasher broke the last day we were there and we arranged for a new one to be installed within 2 days. Quite an effort was made to reach the incoming guests, but perhaps they had left already for their vacation. They arrived and spent the night and the new dishwasher was in the next day.
Finally, we are so sorry that these guests did not know about the Yellowstone river flooding and high water. The highest water in many, many years is not within our control and yes, unfortunately it does mean the fire pit by the river was flooded. We really can appreciate what a disappointment it must have been to not be able to hang out down by the river. We have enjoyed it from the deck and certainly had our own disappointments of the local hot springs being flooded out and the river being too high for good fishing. Unfortunately, we cannot keep our guests abreast of all the weather and other natural phenomena in the Yellowstone area.
We do hope that these guests were able to enjoy the many wonderful amenities the River House does offer and the varied, beautiful, and fun options of the surrounding Yellowstone area.

River House 2011 Vacation

Late Spring 2011

The Riverhouse is the quintessential log home. The moment that we arrived at Riverhouse we felt as though we were home. The house has a very welcoming and relaxing ambiance. Riverhouse is beautifully appointed and very well stocked. Situated on well maintained grounds by the banks of the Yellowstone River, one couldnt ask for a more ideal vacation spot.

The layout of the house is perfect for large groups, there were a number of us in our group and never once did we feel as though we were cramped for space. The kitchen being open to the dining room is a really great feature and where we spent most of our time after our visits to the park. We are avid foodies and I must mention that the kitchen is a dream to cook / entertain in.

Riverhouse is a perfect 10 minute drive to the North entrance to Yellowstone, couldnt be easier!

I am looking forward to our visit back to the Riverhouse next year!

Relaxing, Beautiful, Great for All Ages

Thank you so much! We had a great stay at the River House. With two young children (almost 4 years old) and six adults, we felt completely at home. The house was as described, very clean, plenty of warm bedding. The kids LOVED the tire swing and were happy to spend all day on it, they paddled and played in the pond, watched for the local bunny on the lawn, fed apples and carrots to the neighboring horse and mule, played in the hammock, and raced around the enormous living room/kitchen/den. They also loved the nearby picnic areas in the YNP (Yellowstone National Park) as they both had rivers to play in and lots of wildlife. The kids got to see bears (lots, including cubs!), elk, bison, snakes, etc in YNP. As for the adults, we all loved the serenity of the house, the ample living spaces, the deck by the Yellowstone River, the baby birds in the nest at the kitchen window, the ability to come to together as a group and hang out but equally easily all be in the house with our own sense of quiet and privacy when needed. I went plunging in the pond, which was lovely. The house has beautiful large pictures/photographs of all the local animals of the area. The TV was awesome, huge comfy chairs and sofas everywhere. We had BBQs and a sit-down dinner party with local friends, We got WiFi in some rooms and out on the porch swing (another wonderful hangout at the house), all easy for our needs. The house is removed and yet really close to town and YNP--10 minutes to town, 15 to Park. Our favorite local eatery was the Tumbleweed Bookstore Cafe, kids and adults were all happy there (library/toys in it). Local grocery store had most of what we needed, though we stocked up on organic choices at the fantastic food co-op in Bozeman. Only big disappointment was the the unusual high water had closed the Boiling River hot springs. Next year we will be back!

Stay July 24 - July 31

House was comfortable and well stocked.
One of the main reasons we rented this particular house is because it was advertised as having WIFI, the owner has since changed the description. The WIFI did not meet our needs anywhere in the house. I know one is supposed to get away on vacation but this vacation, for my family was taken with the requirement that my daughter attend online classes and I check work email, this was not possible anywhere in the house. We asked the owner fro 50 per day compensation, they would only agree to $100 for entire stay. This was not acceptable for the inconvenience.
We also arrived to a note pasted on dishwasher that it was not working. It was fixed the next day but notification would have been nice - BAD first impression.
Don't take stuff for smores this year - pit must be under water, also no notofication
