Photos and Description of the Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt vacation cottage rental
Cottage, 1 BR + futon, 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 2 adults + 1 child or guest)

This stone cottage on 1.8 hectares (4 acres) of farmland has been meticulously restored to the highest standards of taste and comfort with antique finishings and modern conveniences and is available for rental in all four seasons. Taking maximum advantage of a relatively compact space, the ground floor offers a living/dining area overlooking a stone patio (the actual dining area for most of the year), a fully equipped ultra-convenient gourmet kitchen, a functioning wood stove, and a half-bathroom under a custom-made plaster spiral staircase. The house has satellite television, high-speed WiFi, and internet telephony with free calling anywhere. The spiral staircase leads up to a master bedroom with views in all directions and an artisan-created fully modern bathroom with shower and double sink fitted out with antique doors and tiles. The house is cool in summer and warm in winter, with both electric heat and a functional wood stove. It contains two iPod stereo players.

The large property includes a magnificent round stone irrigation bassin (10 meters in diameter), which has been transformed into a swimming pool while retaining its original form. The pool sits in a well defined area 30 meters (100 feet) square, planted with grass and willows, with a full view of the village, including sunsets behind the chateau. The bassin was originally fed by a spring (on old maps the location is called ''Le Gourt,'' a Celtic word for spring-fed basin) which now flows into six wells on the property.

The house has open views in all directions, south to the Luberon mountains, north to the plateau of the Vaucluse, and west to the hilltop village of St. Saturnin-les-Apt with its ruined chateau, church, and windmill. The house is surrounded on three sides by a terrasse (patio) incorporating two old stone wells and paved on the south and west by a ''calade'' constructed entirely of stones from an old threshing floor unearthed during renovation.

The south side is shaded by a wisteria-planted custom-made iron tonnelle (canopy) overlooking the Luberon mountains in the distance. The immediate view is of a gently sloping gravel pathway bordered by lavender, boxwood, roses, and olive trees, leading down to the pool area.

Beautiful Property in a Dream Location

My daughter and I had a truly wonderful time at La Ferrage. The house and the farm exceeded our expectations both in terms of the physical beauty of the setting and the extent to which it seems as though the owners anticipated every possible need we could have. The house is an absolute dream, with all the comforts of home, and the kitchen was a delight to cook in.

We loved the little town of St Saturnin les Apt and we were within easy distance of so many other villages and sights. Barney and Sue were warm, communicative, and extremely helpful in guiding us as we planned our stay. If you've ever wondered what it would feel like to step inside a Cezanne, this is it! We will be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Sara! We did try to make LaFerrage a work of art, to complement the beauty of the region and the charm of St. Saturnin. We're happy you and your daughter had such a lovely time, and look forward to welcoming you back very soon. Warmly, Sue and Barney.

Sophisticated Stone Cottage - Best One Bedroom in the Luberon

5 of 5
Submitted: August 15, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
WOW!! We arrived La Ferrage cottage late Saturday afternoon for a three week stay. We were greeted with fabulous hot, sunny weather and blue Provence skies. The weather held for our spectacular weeks. The VRBO photos belie how spectacular the cottage is in person. Susan and Barney have done such a perfect job on the house and surrounding property, all four acres. It is obvious that they both are as much into detail and 'doing the job right' as John and I are.

Everything is in fine working order. Everything we need, and more, is here. The first level is perfect, with fabulous kitchen outfitted for the gourmand (me and Barney), perfect living (salon) room with dining corner for two, comfy couch and chair. The "loo" is extremely convenient. Upstairs is extremely spacious, light, filled with sunlight and 360 degree views. The bedroom is huge with ample closet (hanging space and shelves), writing desk and chic chair, and you got to love the round "eye" window above the bed. And the bathroom is sumptuous - so much room for each individual, delightful shower, great light from three windows.

The exterior of the ancient stones and stone work is perfection and so provencal. The two stone patios and grounds are gorgeous and you will feel like the lord in your manor with surrounding land - ooh so private and restful. Cherry orchards, white rose gardens lined with boxwood, herb garden, boules court, olive trees, massive lines of lavender, and more garden glory.

The outdoor piece de resistance may be the huge circular pool at just the right temperature after a hot day of shopping or driving or whatever wonderful activity you engage in in this beautiful area of Provence.

We highly recommend the Sunday market at Coustellet and LeClerc and SuperU for essentials. Of course every day there is a wonderful market in some town. Tuesday's in Gordes is also not to be missed.

We know the Luberon very well and have experienced several extended stays. But this is the best in every way. We were so thrilled we chose this cozy Luberon cottage. We will definitely return for another extended stay - no need to look for another rental, this is the ultimate.

I chose to write extensively about La Ferrage because it is so special and Barney and Susan have created such a haven that they willingly share with us. How lucky is that?!

Owner's Response: How lucky are we to be able to share LaFerrage with the wonderful guests we have welcomed since renovating the cottage? Part of the joy of owning LaFerrage is seeing the pleasure that others take in the house, grounds, and region. We knew from our first visit to the region in 1993 that the Luberon was "the ultimate" for us. Thank you, Helen and John, for such a wonderful appreciation of LaFerrage and the Luberon. We look forward to your return soon. Sue and Barney

PERFECT!

This is the perfect place to live your Provencal dream! The house and property are exactly as described but even better. The house is immaculate and maintained with care. The well-equipped kitchen is large by European standards, the living room is cozy and the upstairs bedroom and bath are very large. There are views from all the windows as well as patios surrounding the house for lounging and dining in privacy. It's heaven to enjoy a glass of wine on the patio overlooking acres of cherry trees, olive trees and a rose garden. The pool looked inviting, but weather was too cool for us to use it during our stay. Owners Barney and Sue were very easy to work with and answered all our questions promptly. It's apparent they take great pride in their home and for good reason. Joelle provided us with a seamless check-in, check-out procedure. We enjoyed the little town of St.Saturnin les Apt, just as cute as Menerbes and other more "famous" towns in Provence. The walk up to the "castle" provides great views. We enjoyed the little Sunday market here much more than we did the huge one in Isle sur la Sorgue. The only problem we encountered was that the house was so lovely, we hated to leave and wanted to just stay there and relax in the beautiful setting! We definitely recommend this house and hope to rent it again during our next trip to Provence.

Owner's Response: Dear Rosanne and William: We're very glad you found perfection at LaFerrage! And we agree that St. Saturnin is the perfect Provencal town -- a real, "working" village, with all necessities and amenities within easy walking distance, along with a picture-perfect charm. No matter how many times we're there, we always find some new delight to enjoy, right in our own "hometown." We look forward to welcoming you back on your next stay. Best, Sue and Barney.

Absolutely Wonderful

We recently spent a magical week at La Ferrage. The house is lovely, very well maintained but the grounds around the house are what make it special. The pictures and description are excellent. It was quiet, secluded and heavenly to return to each afternoon. L'heure de l'apero was a special time to wander around the cherry orchard, enjoying the peaceful beauty of the Luberon landscape. Everything about the rental was flawless. Susan and Barney's detailed descriptions of the house, appliances, local area etc. were very informative and helpful. We feel privileged to have been able to stay at La Ferrage. Thank you Susan and Barney.

A Perfect Retreat!

On behalf of both of us, we want to thank you so very much for affording us the opportunity to make La Ferrage our home during our stay in Provence. While we absolutely loved visiting so many exquisite villages and sites, the highlight of everyday was coming back home. Relaxing by the pool or on the patio amidst the warm breeze, gentle sun and (even) the full moon was heavenly. The privacy provided by all of your acreage was a welcomed relief after 5 day of the hustle bustle of the Cote D' Azur. We actually appreciated the chance to see many of the coastal towns but after a few days at your place we realized that a few more could have truly provided the time to settle in and make your home ours!
We feel so much gratitude for all the ways you supported our doing just that. Such detailed explicit directions made the functional side of "getting there" very easy. The high standard appliances and the gourmet kitchen made cooking fun and even washing clothes a breeze. Your extra touches - wine and fresh cut flowers to greet us - provided the personal touch that was supported by Joelle's warmth and availability! If ever we return to Provence, we would not stay any other place but La Ferrage! What a jewel you have to retreat to!!! Thank you, thank you for sharing it with people like us..

Owner's Response: Dear Cindy and Alan -- There really is something so special about the light and air of the Luberon, no matter the hour. We are delighted that you experienced the joys of dolce far niente at LaFerrage after busy hours of touring. We love sharing the house with our guests and hope you will be able to return to LaFerrage soon.

Perfect Provencal Property

5 of 5
Submitted: October 3, 2011 Stayed: June 2011
We stayed a week in late June, 2011 and found this home to be an amazing find. This house itself is comfortable, well-appointed with a large upstairs bedroom and very large modern bathroom. Downstairs is a smallish living room, but so much time is spent relaxing and dining outside on the beautiful patio-area, this is not an issue. The downstairs kitchen is comfortably medium-sized and very well equipped. There is a good BBQ grill in the shed.
The patio is somewhat shaded, and offers spectacular views of St Saturnin, a charming medieval village, and generally gorgeous Procencal landscapes. The property is landscaped beautifully with lavender everywhere and a great herb-garden.There is even a gravelly area by the side.....perfect for playing petanque (boules) alone with your evening aperitifs!. Located IN a cherry orchard in season, there was the bonus of picking ripe cherries daily.
The pool was a welcome addition in the heat of the day. It is large and very clean.
The house is extremely well-cared for and the caretaker was available when needed.
The house is a short 10-15 min drive to Apt, which has a good fish monger (poisonnerie) on the main road into town across from the train station. Also a great butcher in the center of Apt right next to the pedestrian street. Also a really good cave du vin in the old area of Apt.
St Sat has several good boulangeries for breakfast provisions, usually with easy parking.
This is a perfect location for exploring the nearby towns of Rousillon, Gordes, Gault, Menerbes, Oppede, etc.
The owners are fellow New Yorkers who clearly have put a great deal of care into this wonderful property and want to ensure that clients have a wonderful stay.
We plan to return to this unique home. We had an amazing time!

Owner's Response: Dear Linda and Jonathan, We are so happy that you had a wonderful time at LaFerrage. Like you, we so enjoy the bounty of the region -- all the fantastic fresh produce, fish from the Mediterranean, bread, wine, home-grown cherries in season -- and prepared food from the traiteurs when you just feel like totally relaxing. Looking forward to welcoming you back!

A Heavenly Place!

We loved La Ferrage and cannot wait to return. The listing description and pictures described it perfectly. It is a heavenly place!

Other than the beauty and peacefulness of the house and grounds, somethings we particularly appreciated:

Joelle, the site manager. What a special person! She was welcoming, charming, and Johnny on the spot when we needed help.

It was very clean and bright, good reading lights in the living room and bedroom, ipod docking stations, double sinks in bathroom, well stocked kitchen--the first time we have ever had good knives, the gorgeous swimming pool--which we only got to use once before it started raining, the cherries, the flowers, the comfortable outdoor chairs, the privacy, the proximity to such an authentic yet service abundant village, thorough written intructions provided for everything from use of appliances to directions to restaurants in nearby towns, and much much more.

We couldn't have had a better experience. If there had been more sunshine it would have been a different experience, but we couldn't be happier about the time we had.

Owner's Response: Jane, we're very happy that you enjoyed your stay at La Ferrage and appreciate your comments about the house, the grounds, the neighboring town -- and Joelle. From the kitchen equipment to the pool design, we've aimed to plan everything for maximum comfort and pleasure. Now if only we could control the sun! We hope that on your next stay every day will be a sunny one in usually sunny Provence...Sue and Barney

Ahhh, Provence!

My husband and I stayed here for our summer vacation this year and were very impressed by all the thought put into the accomodation. This open planned cottage is tucked away on a working cherry farm where we got the chance to watch how cherries are harvested! It had a great kitchen with evertything you would need to make a delicious meal- best had out on the patio!! The bedroom was very comfortable and master bathroom roomy. St. Saturnin-les-Apt is a short walk away and caters to most needs. As well, it is only an hour or two drive to a lot of places a tourist might want to visit. We enjoyed our stay here very much and will definitely return! A car rental is a must!!

Owner's Response: Dear Michelle and Tom, We're happy you took advantage of all that the Luberon has to offer from your "base camp" at La Ferrage. We consider its location amidst the cherry trees as one of its most important charms--as well as Roland, the man who tends the trees. As you learned from your adventures with him, he is a charming and knowledgeable fellow not just about cherries but many other things, too. Looking forward to your return, Sue and Barney.

I almost hate to say how wonderful this jewel is because we would like to save it for our return visit. We have rented many places thru vrbo but this one was the best. Everything was perfect. The house stayed cool during the hot day if shut down early, but it was lovely to hear the petit Mistral blowing a time or two. We enjoyed most meals on the lovely patio almost hating to go in to town to eat. The kitchen had all the needed utensils, etc that made cooking fun (after hitting the locals market). Susan and Barney have made the perfect get away in a delightful part of France. There is a lot to do in the area, including the "Language in Provence", French language intensive school we attended. The school was a 7 minute walk from the house. The pictures and description you gave of your home are very accurate. The house is clean and you can tell it is someplace you love, not just something you made to earn money from. Thank you, we will be back.

Owner's Response: Dear Lise and Duane: We are truly delighted that you enjoyed your stay at La Ferrage. We appreciate all your positive comments about the home’s comforts and about the accuracy of the listing. But most of all we appreciate your love of La Ferrage and of the region—and your recognition of our love for it, too! We are having a great time sharing the cottage and the Luberon with our guests and look forward with pleasure to your return. Sue and Barney
