Your own dock on the bay. Walk to the Perfect Cup Cafe, restaurants, art galleries and shops. We completely renovated and re furnished this cottage in 2011 for our own use a few weeks a year, so we spared no expense to make it the way we wanted. The rest of the time we share it with others. For us, it is paradise. Matlacha [MAT' LA SHAY' ] is an old fishing village protected from high rises and modern desecration by historic district zoning.
A local Realtor couldn't have put it better - Her description is no exaggeration:
'Matlacha Florida is one of the few old Florida villages left. Located on Matlacha Pass which connects to the Gulf of Mexico the fishing and boating is fantastic. You find lots of local color and flare. Everything in Matlacha is located on the water. Fresh seafood served in all the restaurants. Art galleries and events. Live music every week end. Located on the Great Calusa Blueway, Matlacha offers some of the best Kayaking experiences you could want. Paddle through the mangroves. See manatees, dolphins, eagles, osprey. This is Paradise! '
As of 2012 We now have for our guests 2 kayaks, a single and a double, and we have 2 bicycles. Update for winter 2013: We are staying here for a couple of months and have had the cablevision disconnected to make sure we don't waste a precious minute here watching trash. (there remains a DVD/TV for watching movies) We found that many television programs can be watched on our laptop at Hulu.com without a cable hookup. If you wish to spend your time here televiewing, we can have it connected for you. We feel our quality of life here improved by it's absence.
New for 2013. We built single bunk beds in our spare room, so we could sleep more guests. It is the room we store the two bikes and the single person kayak, but they can be put outdoors if needed. There us a 2 inch thick foam 'camping' mattress fir ibe if the bunks. If you wish to use the bunks, bring sleeping bags to use. We only list this as a 2 bedroom, since this third one is not yet air conditioned, but this can provide an extra sleeping accommodation.

We never thought we'd want a place in Florida until serendipitously, on a visit to Cayo Costa Island nearby, we happened upon the magical village of Matlacha. For us, it is the 'Woodstock of Florida.' [Woodstock, New York is one of our other homes].
A unique little village. Our cottage is in a neighborhood historic district, protected forever for the blight of high rises, condos, shopping malls and superhighways that have destroyed much of Florida and the rest of the USA.
