Photos and Description of the Captain Cook vacation cabin rental
Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

This rustic wooden mountain cabin (''Much more than a cabin!'' - Julia) is situated next to a forest, in a secluded spot away from the main house, on a 3.5 acre farm. At an elevation of 2,000 feet, it avoids the summer heat at sea level (''Cool and peaceful..'' - Teri), yet is close to Kealakekua Bay (5 miles), kayaking, horse-riding, the Captain Cook Monument, Place of Refuge, and wonderful snorkeling. Ten minutes south is a small shopping center, with supermarket, Chinese restaurant, sandwich shop, etc. Three miles north is Kainaliu Town, with theater/cinema, pharmacy,Blue Ginger Gallery, clothing stores and other quaint places. Two of the finest restaurants in West Hawaii (Mi's Italian Bistro, and Keei Cafe) are less than 15 minutes away. Other coffee shops and restaurants are close by. From the cabin, a short walk across the property and along private paths through coffee fields leads you down a road that takes you through natural Hawaiian flora.

The 760 square feet cabin consists of a living-room, sleeping loft, bathroom, and well-equipped Hawaiian-style lanai kitchen with screens that look into the forest (''The forest is full of birdsong'' - Claudia & Chan). A redwood deck is situated under the kukui and macadamia nut trees, and has a charcoal barbecue (''An evening barbeque and wine on the deck - perfect'' - Barbara & John).

The farm has our three beloved and gentle dogs, two cats, sheep, chickens, and two guinea fowl. These are kept in an area at the upper south end of the farm, and the cabin is at the lower north end, some distance from the animals. From the cabin and its deck many of the sounds of the forest can be heard.

Guests will find fresh farm eggs, homemade bread, a fruit basket, Kona coffee, and other goodies to get them started.

We loved our time at Koa Cabin! Owners do make you feel very welcomed and comfortable - they are a delight to work with. They are very respectful of the guests' privacy and very helpful as to how to orient yourself in the area. Upon our arrival we were welcomed with a hot homemade bread, fresh eggs, and countless tropical fruit. You can only imagine how cozy it makes you feel when the house is filled with the delicious aroma of a fresh homemade bread when you step in after a long travel. The cabin was super clean and comfortable. There was everything we needed and more. The property is nicely tacked away so you can enjoy your privacy, and close enough if you need anything from the owners. Our little daughter loved the animals - the neighbor's horse visiting, the sheep, the friendly dogs, chickens, and all kinds of wildlife. She even went to collect fresh eggs from the chickens one morning! Stay here - you will be happy you have!

A Little Piece of Heaven

Koa Cabin was such a delight. This cabin is tucked away in Captain Cook allowing for a peaceful and serene stay on the Big Island. The open air design of the cabin and the lush forest surrounding the cabin, make it such a treasure. Every morning we woke up, laid in bed, and listened to the bird song in the tree tops; we would then enjoy the freshly ground kona coffee in the open-air kitchen while watching the chickens enjoy their morning feed.

Jeffrey and Heide were so thoughtful, leaving bread (gluten-free), jam, and fresh fruits and vegetables, along with goodies from the rest of the property. I could have spent my whole trip at this property, enjoying the fresh air while reading a book.

I highly recommend Koa Cabin for couples who need a breathe of fresh air, a little privacy, and want to enjoy the forests of Hawaii. I can't imagine staying any where else during our next trip to the Big Island. Thank you for the hospitality and Aloha.

I wish we had read all the details on this very well stocked cabin. We would have left so much at home. The cabin has all you'll need from snorkel gear and boogie boards to ample towels and bedding, sunscreen, shampoo, everything you need in a kitchen, washer / dryer etc. The Cumes' could not have been nicer or more gracious hosts. The fridge was well stocked, plus there was a loaf of fresh baked bread and a big bowl of delicious fruit. Lovely animals too. Perfect setting with grazing sheep, a nice garden, sounds of the jungle [ really ] and the world's friendliest horse leaning over the fence mooching bananas. Far enough from the main house for privacy but close enough for contact. Go Mighty Dog!

This cabin is the best decision you can make for a place to stay!

All the previous reviews have been spot on. This was an absolutely amazing place to stay!
My wife and I originally planned to stay in a hotel or condo. We found a few condos on VRBO close to the beach, but when I read the reviews on this cabin and saw the pictures, I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I made this decision! I can never go back to condos or hotels on this Island again!

Heide and Jeffrey definitely know what they are doing. When we arrived, Heide gave us a detailed tour of the place. They had fresh homemade bread ready, eggs straight from the chickens on the property, fruit from their yard, and homemade jam as well. Plenty of towels provided, boogie boards and snorkel gear ready for ocean fun! All kitchen and bath supplies were provided for us. This cabin was stocked far better than any hotel or condo i've ever been in!

The property itself is very private and tucked far enough into the hills that you can't even hear traffic noise. It is a jungle-like setting so all the sounds are pure nature, which made it a very romantic experience.

The location is in what I call a strategically great area. It takes about 15 minutes to get to Kona depending on traffic and a little less of a drive if you're planning to visit Hilo or Volcano National Park. There are plenty of attractions nearby such as The City of Refuge -- which has beaches, historical structures, and is a good snorkeling site.

The only regret we had was not being able to stay longer! Thanks Heide and Jeffrey for a wonderful travel experience! You couldn't have made it easier and more comfortable!

A charming and Tranquil Retreat in Paradise

Submitted: December 21, 2011 Stayed: November 2009
We stayed at KOA Cabin for 10 days. It was a very comfortable, charming and tranquil retreat. We are back on the mainland and back to work - wishing we were still on the Big Island snorkeling and hiking then returning to the comfort of the KOA Cabin each evening, falling into a deep sleep! Our first morning we feasted on fresh baked bread, home made jams, tropical fruit and a rainbow of fresh eggs washed down with Kona Coffee. Heide treated us with fresh fruit each day and I gorged on the Macadamia Nuts outside the front door (I begrudgingly shared with the Hens and Dog). We enjoyed the morning visits of the Sheep and the birds singing away and mongoose romping. The cabin is secluded yet convenient to some great spots – Pu uhonua O' Honaunau - the Place of Refuge and the adjacent Two Step – a fantastic place to Snorkel (Heidi and Jeff provided Snorkel Gear and Boogie Boards at the cabin! ) We also rented a tandem Kayak at Kealakekua Bay and went over to the Captain Cook Monument to Snorkel (I would recommend renting from the older gentleman – Mailles - just the down the street past the main parking area rather than the questionable characters in the parking lot). The cabin is close to Kailua Kona with shopping, restaurants and a great Luau at the Royal Kona Resort. We had a great time, my husband just wishes he had had the time to challenge Jeff at Ping Pong! Thanks Heide and Jeff!

We have spent a couple of our vacations now at Koa Cabin and I cant praise it enough. First of all, I must say that our hosts, Jeffrey and Heide Cumes, are some of the most wonderful folks we have ever met. You are greeted to the cabin with a variety of fresh tropical fruits from the property, Heide's wonderful home-made bread and Kona coffee. They are kind, caring and truly bend over backwards to ensure their guests have a splendid experience. The cabin itself has everything you need for a comfortable stay and is surrounded by beautiful orchids, bananas, mac nuts and even 'awa (kava). You awaken every morning to a chorus of birdsongs from the forest behind the cabin and a detached lanai offers lounging and outdoor dining opportunities, if you have the inclination for a barbecue. In the town of Captain Cook you can go to the Manago Hotel for the best pork chops on the Big Island or take a short drive to access excellent Japanese or Mediterranean cuisine or Auntie Clara's wonderful kava stand. From Koa Cabin you can easily visit the not to be missed City of Refuge at Honaunau, several ancient Hawaiian temples, go swimming at Two-Step or view the ancient Ali'i burial grounds and the Captain Cook Monument at Kealakekua. It's a short drive to Kailua town if you want to go shopping or hit the night spots .Truly, much of Koa Cabin's charm is the feeling that you really don' 't need to go anywhere...it's a great place just to kick back, lay in the hammock and let the world hurry on its way. This feels like what it's like to live in Hawai'i but if you want the fancy King's Shops at Waikaloa or the golf courses, they are all within driving distance. Captain Cook is a great community, with warm and welcoming people who live the aloha spirit and the Sunday farmers market is a fun way to wile away a few hours, getting breakfast, listening to music and shoping for fresh produce and local crafts. Once again, I want to emphasize just how special the Cumes family makes you feel and I guarantee you will leave Koa Cabin with warm memories and a little sadness that you couldn't stay there a little longer.

Owner's Response: We appreciate this review because, as much as WE love this place, it is always gratifying to see what others feel and how they have experienced the Koa Cabin and its environment. Also special are the details our guests include that we may not have thought of, reflecting their own unique discoveries while staying here (like the Manago Hotel's pork chops!). This review reflects our intent - to provide a quality location that includes thoughtful elements that will enhance our guests' vacation.

A cozy kid-friendly cottage retreat on the mountainside

My husband, our 2 year-old son and I stayed at this cabin for 4 nights in April 2011. We were very pleased with the cabin. The hosts were accessible, friendly and responsive, but also discrete and respectful of our privacy. The cabin was exceedingly well-stocked, including a crib and beach toys for our boy. In fact, I can't think of anything that it was lacking! You get the sense that they have been doing this for a while and have refined it down to a science. I don't think you can go wrong with this rental, especially if you have a little one.

Charming Koa Cabin

5 of 5
Submitted: March 3, 2011 Stayed: February 2011
This quiet and comfy cabin was perfect for us. It was close (within easy driving distance) to tons of things to see (Captain Cooks Monument, Place of Refuge, Painted Church, etc.), eat (fruit and coffee plantations, as well as numerous restaurants), and do (picnicing, snorkeling, hiking).

Jeffrey and Heide were very helpful and gave great recommendations about the best local places to eat and snorkel. To our delight, they also stocked the cabin with plenty of awesome fruits and some basics (condiments etc.) so we could prepare our own lunches without having to go out and buy those items which would otherwise mostly go to waste.

They have a number of friendly dogs and the neighboring property has a horse that likes to come to the fence to be pet. Of the three places we stayed while traveling around the island, this was the most charming and peaceful.

Depending on how you look at it, the only con is that this property is a fair ways off the main road on a private drive which is slow going. The flip side is that the area is really quiet and all you hear are the sounds of the wildlife which makes you feel like you could be in a jungle.
