Photos and Description of the Castiglione del Lago vacation villa rental
Beautiful large, old farmhouse, tastefully restored retaining original features

The villa is available for Spring, Summer and Autumn holiday rentals. Situated in the Valley of the Fireflies, the farmhouse is the owners own home, extremely comfortable and in immaculate condition. GROUND FLOOR: spacious dining room, modern kitchen, washroom lavanderia, breakfast area on terrace, supper area under the pergola.

FIRST FLOOR: very large reception room, loggia, master bedroom with bathroom en suite, double bedroom, twin bedroom (can be double), shower room. OUTSIDE: beyond the pergola with steps leading from the lawn is the 12m x 6m swimming pool (beautifully lit in the evenings), with breathtaking views over the olive groves to the ancient Etruscan towns of Chiusi and Montepulciano on the horizon. The gardens have many eating/drinking/musing areas. All 'mod cons': washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, central heating, water softener, ceiling fans with 5 speed regulators in all bedrooms. TV, DVD player, lead to iPod, collection of CDs WIFI connection.

A beautiful location near Lake Trasimeno.

Situated in the Valley of the Fireflies, the farmhouse is the owner's own home. In 1995, Peter Hobday, wrote a book called, 'In the Valley of the Fireflies' about his wife Victoria's experiences of restoring the villa and their discovery of Umbria's saintly and sinful past. If you go to their own personal website you can order the book directly from there.

In the spring and early summer the fireflies come out at dusk creating a magical sight - a myriad host of living lanterns.

Our villa is for those seeking a private alternative to an hotel. It is a very comfortable, beautifully restored 'home from home'. It is actually our home, we use it a lot ourselves and we believe we are situated in the most culturally enriching and stunningly beautiful corners of Italy.

WINEING AND DINING AL FRESCO. Directly from the kitchen is a dining table on the terrace with a large sun umbrella for a shady breakfast and lunch. Further along the terrace under the pergola is a trestle table for evening suppers. Before hand one can sit on the lawn with an evening cocktail watching the most beautiful ever changing sunsets.

The village is 6 minutes down the hill, we're amongst pretty hill top towns, great local restaurants. Easy distance to Florence, Rome, San Gimignano, Siena, Spoleto and Assisi and the which is lake is 20 minutes away down the valley.

Surrounding areas: The FOUR AIRPORTS we are are near: ROME, PISA, FLORENCE and PERUGIA.

There is car hire at each airport and also one in Chiusi itself at Avis.

Easy car ride to all the cultural towns in middle Italy.

PLUS take a bus or train to Florence, Rome, Montepulciano, etc. The bus station is beside the train station in Chiusi.

leasure activities: Swimming in the private pool 12 by 6 meters.

Walking in and around the pretty hill topped towns.

There are two bicycle hire places in or around Casiiglione. One with web site, www.ciclivalentini.it. The other with email, mfstefano@libero.it

Tennis, one club in Chiusi, one in Cetona

Horse riding

Go to the MALL the famous fashion OUTLET just below Florence. About 1 hr 15 mins by car from the house to the MALL..

Take a ferry ride to visit the three islands on Lago Trasimeno.

About Victoria and Peter

Nearly twenty five years ago Peter Hobday who was helping to present the Today programme on Radio 4, came across an article about properties for sale in Italy, amazing bargains the article said! So Peter rang his wife Victoria and in no time they were ringing estate agents searching for the 'Italian dream'.

They found it, Casa del Lauro. It was a complete ruin set upon a wheat sown hillside surrounded by olive trees. They restored it, and through the years created an architecturally designed garden. There were many ups and downs with trees being moved on a regular basis from one spot to another! Now that Peter has more time they try to be there on and off for about three months of the year. It is their home in Italy.

Victoria and Peter purchased this villa in 1988
Why Victoria and Peter chose Castiglione del Lago

It is in a typical Italian farmhouse style, long and low with pale tiles on the roof. They could not have got nearer to the classic Italian dream house. It's near Lago Trasimeno and the cultural centre of Italy.

What makes this villa unique

Casa del Lauro is set among gentle rolling hills, with 360 degree views of pretty little Umbrian hill top towns such as Montepulciano and the old Etruscan town of Chuisi.

This is one of the most delightful properties we have experienced in all our travels. The house is beautifully restored and furnished, with every room offering breathtaking views over the farmhouse’s olive grove, rolling fields and hilltop villages nearby.

The grounds and landscaping, surrounding Casa del Lauro, are immaculate and you will find it difficult to leave the beautiful pool overlooking the Umbria hills.

The location is ideal with so many intriguing and charming old villages to explore, as well as the larger city centers such as Rome, Florence and Assisi, which are only a short train or car ride away.

During your stay be sure to read the book written by the owner “In the Valley of Fireflies". It will enrich your experience as you read about the adventures and the labor of love that went into making Casa del Lauro the beautiful place it is today.

An absolute gem in the green heart of Italy

Casa del Lauro was a dream come true from start to finish. From the moment we made our way up the winding bianca strada through the gorgeous rolling Umbrian countryside and arrived at Casa del Lauro, we were smitten. Nestled on five glorious acres of lovely landscaped lawns with blossoming cherry trees, stands of stately cypress and its own olive grove, this beautifully restored farmhouse villa was everything we could have hoped for and more. Sympathetically restored over the years, the owners Victoria and Peter have retained much of the structure's original features such as traditional tiled floors, charming archways and classic Italian red roof tiles, and introduced welcoming modern touches such as well appointed bathrooms and a European-style kitchen, where we made dinner each evening after enjoying cocktails under the pergola, admiring the view and glorious sunsets. Days started with the sound of birds chirping as we threw open the shutters, greeted by sunshine, blue skies and spectacular views. Our two weeks in Umbria were a delicious culinary and cultural adventure, with daily excursions to Orvieto for ceramics, Norcia for prosciutto, black truffles and Casteluccian lentils, Assisi for the Basilica of St Francis, a well as the spectacular hilltowns of Gubbio, Todi, Spoleto, Arezzo and more. Perched on the border between Tuscany and Umbria, and minutes to the autostrada, Casa del Lauro was perfectly located to take advantage of everything the area had to offer. It's easy to fall in love with everything about Umbria — the gorgeous scenery, the traditional Umbrian hill towns, the warmth of its people and of course, the lovely Casa del Lauro — our home away from home. We had an extraordinary vacation exploring Umbria and Tuscany, and can’t wait to return. It captured our hearts.
Owner's Response: It never ceases to amaze us how much our guests manage to do when they stay at Casa del Lauro. They get to see so many interesting places and sample so many of the local reataurants. Yet they say what they remeember most is the peace and quiet of Casa del Lauro.

You could not ask for a better place to stay! The house was beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and so well equipped and the garden and pool wonderfully well looked after.

On the one day it rained the house was so cosy that it didn’t matter.

The views were breathtaking and the peace and quiet very welcome.

Easy drives to Assisi and Siena and we particularly liked Cita dela Pieve a beautiful walled town nearby.

We visited several of the restaurants recommended by the owner and all were lovely.

The owners were extremely helpful and responded to emails very promptly.

Casa de Lauro is simply one of the most beautiful places that we have stayed and we would certainly return and hope to do so in the not too distant future.

What a stunning house in every respect-we cannot imagine a more perfect situation,Victoria and Peter have done a magnificent job in restoring this once derelict Umbrian farmhouse into a beautiful home with wonderful panoramic views over the valley to Chiusi in Umbria and to the Tuscan hills and Montepulciano beyond.Instructions for visitors are very detailed and clear and there is a most helpful list of nearby restaurants to visit. The swimmimg pool is perfect .Inside the house is charming with lots of space for 6 people and lots of books to browse through too.

Under the Umbrian Sun

"But who else is staying with you?" was the question we received most often when friends and family saw the photo of the beautiful villa and grounds that make up Casa del Lauro. "Just us!" we'd gleefully reply.

This is the perfect location for a dream vacation to bask in the delights of the green heart of Italy (the food! the views! the sun! the food!) with all the comforts and conveniences of home. Green your heart will be with envy wishing you were fortunate enough to have been born one of the friendly locals.

From our lavish post we were easily able to visit numerous charming hilltowns in western Umbria and eastern Tuscany, usually two or more in one day. Coming home and throwing open the shutters, cracking open a bottle of Prosecco that the owners had put out for our enjoyment along with peaches, olive oil and milk for our coffee, taking a soak in the large tub with views of the olive groves, or perhaps a dip in the pool, then watching a brilliant sunset over the rolling hills before having dinner under the grapevine- & wisteria-roofed loggia or in a nearby town...this is your vacation holiday at Casa del Lauro.

We (party of 6) spent an fantastic week in September at Casa del Lauro - the house and surrounding area was fantastic, we couldn't have asked for more!

The welcome gifts were lovely, and we very much enjoyed the home grown grapes and olive oil. And Kathryn, Silvio and the two cats also looked after us well. We were impressed by how well equipped the house was, especially the kitchen as we like to cook when on holiday, but also there was a fantastic selection of books and music to keep us occupied.

The restaurant recommendations that the owners provided were also very handy, I think we tried 3 or 4 and all were good!

In the surrounding area we thought Castiglione del Lago and Lake Trasimeno were well worth a visit, we also took a boat across to one of the islands. But most days we just enjoyed taking in the views at the Casa!

Holiday Location of our Dreams

5 of 5
Submitted: May 29, 2009 Stayed: May 2009
Casa del Lauro is a holiday location that dreams are made of. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and shown around and immediately we were captivated by the rustic charm and beauty of the house, its gardens and spectacular surrounding scenery. The house and beautifully kept grounds are a credit to the owners and clearly demonstrate their love of the place. We had never spent so much time outside on a holiday, sunbathing, reading or sitting under the shade of the Pergola to eat, or listening to the cuckoo and star gazing at night with a glass of wine by the pool. We did visit some of the local walled towns, including Citta Di Pieve, Cortona and the nearby lake at Castiglioni di Lago which demonstrate the wonderful Umbrian culture, and we also ate in some of the local restaurants. But we did not spend half as much time as normal sightseeing as it was so hard to drag ourselves away. The pool was a real treat for us and we even watched the sun go down one evening whilst swimming. The house itself envelopes you in sheer comfort and every need is catered for, making it a real home from home. From every aspect of the house and from every window there are breathtaking views and as I said the house itself is very pretty, by day and by night. There was also plenty of choice in terms of food shops for self catering and the nearest town of Chiusi is mentioned in the film ‘My House in Umbria’, starring Dame Maggie Smith. Casa del Lauro captivates you and, as you can tell, it certainly has a warm place in our hearts. Thank you both for a wonderful holiday, we would thoroughly recommend Casa del Lauro.

The Casa del Lauro experience

5 of 5
Submitted: January 22, 2009 Stayed: June 2008
We’ve stayed at Casa del Lauro three times and each occasion has been so welcoming and relaxing. Whilst we’ve enjoyed visiting local towns and villages some of our favourite days have been spent ‘at home’. With jasmine perfuming the air we enjoyed a glass or two of wine on the patio and let the world come to us!

A pair of Hoopoe would often fly into the pine trees in the garden and then down onto the lawn to dig for insects. It was a very shy yet mystical bird to watch. Regularly in the early evenings we heard and then saw a flock of Bee Eaters flying high in the sky above the house as they rose to catch insects. Their call sounded rather like a softly blown referee’s whistle – and that’s how we knew they were nearby. We first saw them sitting in a group on a telegraph wire which crossed the track leading up to the house. Golden Oriole called to each other throughout the day. We saw them regularly as they flew between the trees just a field away. They love soft fruit and stripped a cherry tree quite quickly. They’re beautiful to watch whilst doing so - unless it’s your tree!

Most evenings just before nightfall a Little Owl flew in over the olive trees, across the patio and rested on a telegraph pole. It sat there each time just for a few minutes before flying off. Later in the evening Fireflies came to life darting all around us. And, although we didn’t see the Nightingale it sang us to sleep most nights during our first week in 2008.

During two of our visits we saw the ‘Scarce Swallowtail’ butterfly – an absolutely wonderful sight flitting around the lavender plants. Humming-bird hawk moths loved to hover over the pots of geraniums.

Just down the road and well worth a visit is Lago di Chiusi where there is a magnificent heronry. The smaller, and for us rarer, Squacco herons could be seen standing on the lily pads by the edge of the lake.

On a couple of the warmer evenings we heard the grunting of, but never actually saw, Cinghiale. Both times they were in the new olive grove next to the house just the other side of the laurel hedge. Perhaps next time ….

Simply the Best

We had always heard that Tuscany was the most beautiful, tranquil and relaxing place to visit. Such descripitive adjectives seem to have their epicentre at Casa del Lauro and then eminate out from there, as ripples on a pond. To awake in the morning with the sun streaming in from a clear blue sky, to hear only the birds and crickets and to look out over the Umbrian hills from Casa del Lauro's hilltop setting was nothing short of sheer bliss.

This is not so much a holiday rental as a home. Comfortable, spacious and wonderfully positioned from where to set out to visit the many charming walled towns and villages, to walk in the hills and to relax in a private garden by the pool. If you are looking for peace and quiet, excellent local tavernas and plenty to do within easy reach for those that want it, stop looking, Casa del Lauro is to us the ultimate.
