Photos and Description of the Stow vacation house rental
Spacious, detached, comfortable family home of great character, self-catering

Traditional Scottish house (1840s) with lots of character, overlooking the Gala Water valley. Set on the edge of the village of Stow, on the A7 road, surrounded by open countryside. South-facing garden, with lawn to the front and surrounded by mature trees. A private and sheltered terrace to the rear with barbecue area and outdoor fire place. Garden pond. Parking for 3 cars.

Ground floor : large country kitchen with living/dining area, double bedroom (twin beds), toilet & shower room, large study/single bedroom with PC/internet, garage with laundry/utility area, bikes and storage.

First floor : conservatory with beautiful views across the valley, large comfortable lounge with wood burning stove and doors leading directly to the terrace and rear garden and to the conservatory, two double bedrooms, large bathroom.

Direct access from the back of the house to open farmland and the hills beyond. Many lovely walks and cycle routes on the doorstep.

TV, Freesat, DVD, CD and WIF

Edinburgh and Stow: Edinburgh - there is an excellent bus service every 30 minutes from just outside the house, directly into the centre of Edinburgh (St Andrew’s Square). The bus takes an hour. By car the journey is about 45 minutes. You might want to consider driving to the ‘Park and Ride’ at Sheriffhall, about 30 minutes away, where you can park your car for free and take a bus into the centre from there. Buses every few minutes.

Stow - there are many lovely walks around the village, you can walk as you please over the hills – the only restriction is that you close all gates and are mindful of livestock. One example, you can drive round to the old road on the other side of the valley opposite the house and park your car in the lay-by there, walk up the hill to the skyline and follow the old track running right (northwards) up the valley – lovely views over the rolling Border hills in all directions.

Visits in the Borders: Melrose - the little town is very pretty with interesting shops and places to eat, an old abbey and behind it are the Eildon Hills which have lovely views from the top and are not too difficult a climb.

Kelso - a busy Borders town sitting on the river Tweed, within another ancient Abbey, good shops, hotels, coffee shops etc. Floors Castle is nearby.

Traquair House - just outside Innerleithen, dates back to 1107, and is steeped in Scottish history. You can walk from room to room, the ancient furnishings and décor give the impression that it’s as it was hundreds of years ago. It does not feel like a museum. The grounds are beautiful too.

Glentress Forest - between Innerleithen and Peebles, forest walks and lots of marked mountain biking routes of varying difficulty, bikes can be rented, nice café. A great energetic day out.

St Abb’s Head - on the coast north of Berwick-on-Tweed, walks along the cliffs, lots of seabirds, Fast Castle

As the American part of the previous review I can only second everything that was said. The home is all that is described.Very spacious rooms and garden. Beautiful scenery. The Borders attractions are all within a half hour drive in any direction. Edinburgh about 45 minutes. We liked it so much we extended our stay !! Excellent customer service and communication. We are looking forward to staying at this location again on our next visit and would highly recommend this property to anyone interested in a Borders holiday.
Owner's Response: We are really delighted that you and your friends had such a good stay in Stow, enjoying the space and comfort of the house and garden, as well as the easy access to the beautiful Border countryside and Edinburgh too. Haste ye back !

We came with our family of 7 adult people from Holland and stayed for a week in this lovely house. Nice place and a lot of comfort (like at home) A big house with nice rooms but most of the times we sat together in the kitchen. We rented a car so we saw a lot of the Scottisch Borders and of course Edinburgh, the Fringe festival
In the village there was not much to do but we liked biking and walking nearby Stow

Family Reunion

We travelled from Australia to Scotland for my father's 90th birthday and stayed at Quarryknowes for 9 nights. Our family consisted of 3 generations and we found the house to be ideal. It is extremely comfortable, spacious and well maintained, we could not have wished for more and felt very much at home as soon as we entered the property. We spent many an evening sitting around the large kitchen table, this room always felt so cosy and welcoming. The owner had provided an abundance of information on scenic walks, restaurants, public transport and nearby towns to visit, this was very beneficial to us when planning our daily activities and we were never disappointed. The views from the house are beautiful and peaceful. We were all amazed at the fantastic scenery in and around the Scottish Borders, there was so much to do and see, all within close proximity to Stow. Quarryknowes is the ideal base when holidaying in the Borders and I highly recommend it to anyone considering a holiday in this area.
Owner's Response: Tom and I are delighted that you had such a great stay in Quarryknowes. We put a lot of effort into making the house as comfortable and easy to live in as possible, and also to providing up-to-date and relevant information on things to see and do in the area. It's fantastic for us to know that you appreciated both so much !

Enjoyed our stay

We stayed at Quarryknowes for 4 nights at the end of September. There were 4 adults, 3 teenagers (13-16) and a dog so the house was perfect for us. The facilities were great and the house was clean and warm and had a lovely welcoming feel to it. I especially enjoyed sitting having a coffee in the window seat in the cosy country kitchen. The views from the house were fantastic and I had forgotten how beautiful the scenery was in the Scottish borders. The owner was quick to respond to any of my queries and left plenty of info in the house about things to do and see in the surrounding area. We visited a couple of towns and nearby Traquhair House and it was nice to return to Melrose as I had spent a week there in the youth hostel on a school trip 33 years ago!! The boys managed to fit in a round of golf while the girls enjoyed a coffee and home baked cakes in the local coffee shop in Stow. We even went back the next morning to buy some home baking to take back to the house and the scones were just out of the oven and still warm. We had a lovely meal in the Black Bull hotel in Lauder and they very kindly set a table for us in the bar area to allow us to bring along Raasay the dog. We chose the house due to it's location as my daughter was doing some work experience at a local pig farm, Thornielee Cottage, which was a scenic 20 minute drive away. If you happen to pass Thornielee Cottage drop in and buy some of Cath's pork sausages, they are delicious. I believe you can also buy them from the butcher/shop in Clovenfords .All in all we had a great stay at Quarryknowes and wished we could have stayed longer. The only slight disappointment we had was not being able to use the wood burning stove but this did not in any way deter from our enjoyment. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to others or indeed returning myself.

We had a wonderful week at Quarryknowes, would definately recommend it to anyone planning a trip to the borders.
The house is really a home, that makes such a difference to your stay.
Clean, well equipped, spacious and the views..... gorgeous!
Lots to do and see in the area, plus bonus, Edinburgh a short drive/ bus ride away, we struggled to fit it all in a week.
The owner was very helpful, providing lots of information about the house and the local area, the whole process was efficient and easy.
This house and the Scottish Borders not to be missed!!

Indian Summer at Quarryknowes

We enjoyed our stay here and even this late in the year, basked in warm autumn sunshine. Felt as if we were staying in a friend's house, because of all the comforts and homely touches. Only drawback as far as we were concerned was the proximity to the busy roadway and the steepness of surrounding garden - young children had to stay indoors. The conservatory was such a bonus; we loved spending time there. Helpful responses to email enquiries was much appreciated.. A visit to the cafe in the village is a must - friendly welcome and mouth-watering home baking!

Owner's Response: For spring 2011 we will have the flat, south facing grassy area to the front of the house fenced-in and gated, suitable for younger children to play outside, or for bigger ones to play badminton or football ! The garden to the back and sides of the house is indeed steep with many mature trees. Steps and sloping pathways lead to a stile over the garden fence which gives access to the fields and hills behind.

We all had a fantastic time in this wonderful house - there was something for everybody and enough space for us not to get under each others feet!
The village is charming and the bus to Edinburgh runs from just outside - easy!
All the children want to live here permanently (and the adults wouldn't mind either).

We had a very good stay in Stow. The house was perfect and we found everything we needed. It was very kind of Stephanie to visit us the first day. We enjoyed not only the city of Edimburg and the borders landscapes, but also the kindness of scottish people.

First of all i would like to say a big thank you for letting your lovely cottage to us. My husband met two friends on the x box about a year ago and we decided to get togather ,my husband his two friends and three wives . We had a really fantastic holiday in scotland in your cottage and even though we were complete strangers got on really well . Three seperate couples ,one from America, one from England and one from scotland . The cottage was lovely, clean ,with some beautiful views , and very spacious ,we enjoyed getting togather at night around the camp fire and talking and having a laugh. I would certianly reconmend the cottage to any- body who needed to get away from it all and de-stress . It was a holiday that none of us will forget and really enjoyed it, my husband and i are concidering coming back next year . The cottage and scotland are high on my list as one of the best holidays weve had . Thank you agian for everything if it wasnt for you and your cottage we would never had meet the four good friends we now have made.

Thanks so much. I didn´t get a chance to thank you for letting us stay in your lovely house. We had a great time and your house is definitely the best appointed we
ever stayed at. I loved all the art work, the great books and the music. We even
had a few hot days...
