Unique and beautiful, sustainably-built earth bag home in a supremely serene and private rainforest setting. Just a half mile inland and 800 feet above the Pacific Ocean, this enchanted sanctuary sits nestled on a ridge in the small village of Ojochal, a friendly community with an international flavor.
La Casa de Tierra is a perfect place for people desiring a peaceful and regenerative vacation. Here, you can delight in the daily presence of families of white-faced and howler monkeys, a preponderance of toucans and other birds, colorful tree frogs, butterflies, and a bounty of other rainforest creatures.
Designed with comfort and natural beauty in mind, La Casa de Tierra’s open floor plan, sustainably-harvested local hardwood accents, loft, and tall ceilings create a sense of spaciousness and earthy elegance. Its thick walls, ceiling fans, and ocean breezes coming up the ridge keep it refreshingly cool inside even when it’s hot outside. Enjoy lounging on the deck as you watch and listen to the wildlife.

Once you fly in to, San Jose, the capital, you can either drive to Ojochal (through Quepos or San Isidro de el General, a 3 1/2 – 4 1/2 hour drive, depending on traffic), or you can take a secondary 45-minute flight to Palmar Sur (a twenty minute drive from Ojochal). There are many major airlines that fly in to San Jose. If you choose to fly in to Palmar Sur, there are daily flights, and the cost is around $75 each way.
All the major car rental companies are located in San Jose, along with some smaller, Costa Rican companies. You can also find rental car companies that charge considerably less money for their fleet of used cars. If you choose to fly in to Palmar Sur, you can arrange to have a rental car delivered there, usually for a surcharge.
We recommend visitors rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle (like a Toyota Rav-4 or something larger, depending on your taste and desire for comfort), especially if you plan to do any sightseeing. Many of the roads in Costa Rica are unpaved or full of potholes, and in the rainy season, they can get quite muddy. The roads from San Jose to Ojochal, via the mountain pass, are paved and mostly quite good, with dirt roads only in the town of Ojochal, making this trip fine for a front-wheel drive vehicle in the dry season.

We are both world travelers and lived abroad in Europe for many years. We love to discover and enjoy local culture, people and food and explore natural landscapes and urban neighborhoods.

We traveled around Costa Rica early in our relationship in 2001 and fell in love with the people, the amazing and wild natural world, and the 'Pura Vida' way of life. When we visited Ojochal, we loved that it was off the beaten path, but not so far off that we couldn't get there or get supplies easily. We are also foodies and world travelers and there is a wonderful international community and diverse restaurants representative of this. When we decided to purchase land in Costa Rica, we wanted to start with raw land and build ourselves. We were very fortunate to get this 55+ acre ridge top property close to everything, but very private. A dream for us...
This property is amazingly private and serene, like your own private oasis, but still conveniently located in relation to beaches, shops, restaurants and other activities. The sustainably-built home is a work of art with a wonderful relaxing feel. We love knowing our jungle home is so enjoyed by other travelers!
