A a relaxing home from home ideally located
We had a wonderful snowy week in this warm, comfortable spacious summerhouse. In a quiet location, yet close to good roads to Reykjavik, Thingvellir, Selfoss, Gulfoss, the South coast road, lava caves, etc. The good back road to Gulfoss in the snow covered landscape as the sun rose was particularly dreamy and deserted. Winter there is truly spectacular, and so few tourists in february that it has to be one of the best times to be there, with the daylight hours running 10am to 5 pm and long twilights adding considerably either side of that.
The hot tub is great too, though we were out so much we didn't use it as much as we expected. One of our favourite swimming pools was the one in Selfoss, though all the pools we tried were excellent.
The kitchen has a wide Dane of useful equipment as it is a place used by the owners too so you get much more than the bare minimum and can do decent cooking if you feel like it. There were also a good selection of herbs and spices and some basic ingredients left by previous guests, particularly syrup. The local supermarkets had extensive ranges of ingredients and high quality fresh fruit and vegetables, pretty reasonably priced. Kronan in Selfoss was our favourite, which even runs to a whole food section. Special diets ingredients such as dairy alternatives and gluten free are easy to come by, except for chilled and frozen items as these are hard to import. We put the special diets places we particularly liked to eat and shop at on the BunnyGo website.
We did glimpse a big green halo of the northern lights one night, tho it was cloudy much of the time and there are a fair few street lights nearly everywhere in Iceland where there are houses.
On top of it being a relaxing and excellent value place, the owners were so helpful and accommodating by email and in person on arrival, in a way that simply added to the magic and ease of Iceland. The car they have sounds a nice and convenient option too, though we used Viking car rental who were also excellent. It's certainly worth having a large wheeled four wheel drive in winter for when the compressed snow on the roads gets icy.
