All you could ask for ... and more!
What a find! A family home where you stay in the annexe adjacent to the main house. Raquel Pepe and Carmen (and Abuela) could not have been kinder or more welcoming.
There's a large Spanish-style wood and marble kitchen kitted out with everything - even a teapot, which got a lot of use during our stay - except for .... Egg Cups! But we made some out of the inside of a toilet roll.
The front room / diner has all you'd need, and some things you didn't think you'd need, such as the three-heeled local clogs - these became a staple of our evening entertainment!.
Bedrooms and bathrooms are beautifully appointed and the house is enhanced throughout by Raquel and Carmen's lovely paintings.
Outside, the large garden is tended by Pepe to a very high standard. He built everything from the pool to the vine-covered pergola using the local slate and granite to great effect.
The piece de resistance though is the dogs, Runa and Bey (or Beyonce as we christened her after she showed us how bootilicious she was). Hilarious characters who kept us amused every day and who are well-behaved and love children.
Santiso is just minutes away from Lavacolla Airport (not that you'll notice the planes, the double glazing is excellent), and ideally situated for touring all of Galicia. We could get to A Coruna in the north or Vigo in the south in an hour along excellent roads. The grand city of Santiago de Compostela is just ten minutes drive away, with supermarkets on the outskirts which offer fantastic fish and vegetables.
The family keep chickens and sheep and have their own small allotment off to the side of the main garden. They do everything they can to make you feel at home; we were brought eggs, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce - nothing was too much trouble and I can't speak too highly of their kindness and hospitality.
This is a wonderful place for anyone of any age - the only exception would be for people in wheelchairs as the bedrooms are upstairs. The local village has a nice little bar and a great restaurant, Bello, which serves great food cooked to a high standard.
Try the local dish, pulpo (octopus) in one of the many pulperias in the town of Sigueiro. Drive out to Finisterre along the beautiful Costa da Morte. Take a trip down to Cangas and get the boat across to the Islas Ceis for a day in Paradise.
Location, location, location - Casa Bartulo has it in spades.
