We had been thinking of and finally planning a family reunion for almost four years during which time our needs and availability changed. After much searching I found, to our delight, Tenuta Santa Cristina.
TSC is outside the hill town of Magliano Sabina in the most delightful countryside and yet is ONLY an hour from Rome, 45 mins to Orvieto and a little under two hours to Siena.
The estate grows grapes and olives and the views from every window are spectacular! For those of you who are unfamiliar with this area, the countryside has rolling hills with Medieval hill towns perched on top, all reached by roads that wind through the picturesque countryside and along ridge lines offering dramatic views. Step back in time as you walk through narrow roads and arches on cobbled streets barely wide enough for a car to pass and in some cases definitely not! The hill towns of Calvi, (go to the museum and ask to see the nativity) Cottonello and Montebuono are worth a visit - there are so many to choose from but these are on the doorstep of Tenuta Santa Cristina. No matter where you go the people are charming!
I have been learning Italian and was thankful that I could understand most things and make myself understood when needed, no one spoke English. I have to say how wonderful the Italian people are, so warm and friendly (and patient at my humble attempts to speak their language). We arrived late on a Saturday evening, the next day all the shops were closed. I stopped a man in the piazza who took me to a small store owned by Giovanni who sells slices of fresh homemade pizza - Giovanni put chairs outside for my parents to sit on and took me by the arm to his other store which he opened just for us! "Problem Solved" he said! Where else would that happen?
We were fortunate to stay for a whole month (my children & husband joined us mid-way). We got to live the Italian dream, we weren't surrounded by tourists or tourist shops, we were with the locals, shopping with them, eating in local restaurants, really getting the feel of life in Italy. We are all so impressed not just by the beauty of the country but by the people we met.
I'd recommend staying here to anyone, it is so relaxing with the bonus of being so close to Rome yet a million miles away from the hurley burly! Thank you to Laurentia and Daniella for making our stay so wonderful!
