A friendly working farm in a beautiful location
A wonderful place to stay. We were in the Coach House which was bright, clean, sunny, and looked out over the farm, with swallows nesting under the eaves, and a lovely terrace outside on which to eat. Our three children (aged 14,14, and 10) thought it was marvellous, particularly our ten-year old son who was allowed to help on the farm, learning how to milk the cows, feed them, bring them in from the fields and, the undoubted highlight of the stay, drive a tractor. It was harvest time and we were also out in the fields as dusk as the wheat was being brought in, and had a real sense of what farming life was like.
The location was superb, close but not too close to a good supermarket and bakery (perhaps 300 metres), we rented bikes in the village, and cycled all over the place, with good nature reserves, nice villages, and the occasional small town all within easy and pleasant reach. Canoeing at Nieuwkoop thorugh the flooded polders was great fun (if easy to get lost...). Perhaps most striking was that on the last day we left on the bus (we didn't have a car and didn't need one, public transport being excellent), and within an hour were amazed to find ourselves in central Amsterdam, despite feeling for the whole holiday that we were in deepest rural Holland.
Gerard, the owner, whose grandfather originally bought the farm, made us feel wonderfully at home, and knew exactly how to make a small boy enjoy being on a farm!
The other families on the farm were very international (French, Italian, German) and obviously all enjoyed it a lot as well, and it didn't feel crowded, everyone having their own individual spaces.
Five-stars all round.
