Relaxing Tuscan break in delightful Vinci
We had a lovely, warm welcome from Chiara & Ian after an adventurous introduction to Italian motoring from Pisa! It was a relief to stop and take in the amazing view of Vinci from the terrace in front of our accommodation.
Our apartment, Chiocciola" was clean & well equipped - the bedroom upstairs had a great view & the bed was very comfortable. The kitchen/ living room downstairs is compact. The weather was lovely so we spent most of our time outside, either at the table under the covered terrace at the apartment, or down by the pool.
Chiara & Ian provided us with a welcome gift of 2 bottles of wine from their own vineyard & some of their homegrown olive oil. Both were delicious - a lovely gesture. One or other of them were at hand if we needed assistance at any time.
We were charmed by their little herd of rescued donkeys & goats, not to mention the endless variety of cats dozing here & there.
We found Vinci a very interesting place. We visited the Leonardo museum which was fascinating and climbed up the tower to look over the surrounding countryside. We enjoyed a few walks around Vinci, including one up to Leonardo's birthplace. The audio-visual display was very informative & gave us a feel for his life & works. The walking routes are marked with red & white signs but on occasion you have to guess your route!
There is a small Coop for most of your grocery needs and a good variety of other small shops.
Our favourite restaurant in Vinci was Borga Allegra - friendly service & delicious food with an imaginative twist on the usual Italian menu.
We have no hesitation in recommending Podere Zollaio to our family & friends.
It is a great touring base for Florence, Pisa & Sienna - plus the charming hilltop towns on San Gimignano & Voltera.
We hope to visit again in the not too distant future - we just loved it!
