Why Karen chose County Meath

Before being rebuilt and restored to its current state in 2005 the building was a farm barn home of Martin Corrigan prized Clydesdale horses In the 19th and early 20th century it was also location for 'American wakes' where family and neighbours gathered together for farewell parties to mark the departure of loved ones emigrating (often to the US and often not expected to return hence the expression 'American Wake').

What makes this barn unique

Glenboy combines rural character (exposed stone walls, antique furniture) with modern comforts (WiFi, underfloor heating, top-of-the-range pocket-sprung beds etc). It is designed to be a perfect base to explore the area but also a place for family and friends to gather and relax. Glenboy offers get away from it all privacy, views across fields to Loughcrew hills and their 5;000 year old megalithic cairns with the convenience of being walking distance from a village that retains the true character of Irish rural living and an hours drive to Dublin. Our most cherished accolade is that a growing number of guests return to stay with us year after year.

Lovely stay at Glenboy Cottage in Oldcastle

We spent Easter at Glenboy Cottage and found it to be perfect for our needs: to be near family in Westmeath and to introduce the in-laws to Ireland. The open plan layout downstairs worked really well and upstairs everyone had their own privacy as each room had an en-suite. The whole cottage was thoughtfully decorated and the standard of the bedrooms was high. The collie dog outside the patio doors was a bonus! We hope to return again soon. Glenboy is a little gem.

Relaxing and charming barn conversion

This lovely accommodation is ideal for a couple or small group looking to chill and unwind. The well lit conversion gave a spacious and relaxing feel, and features like the courtyard seating, underfloor heating and wood burning stove mean that a visit in either summer or winter would be enjoyable. It is walking distance from Oldcastle, which offered a lot more shops and traditional pubs than we had expected, and the local St Patrick's day parade was fun. The hosts were extremely friendly, helpful and unimposing. A perfect base for visiting the local sites, including Loughcrew prehistoric cairns, which are well worth a visit.

Wish We Had Booked Two Weeks Here!

In 9 years of renting properties in Ireland, Glenboy ranks top of our list for quality and value for money.

We loved the "hi-tech" aspects of the barn: superb walk-in power showers and lots of hot water, and appreciated the beautiful and tasteful furnishings throughout the barn. It was a very cosy place to stay during the somewhat inclement August weather (probably one of the wettest on record!). The kitchen was well-equipped for a family. We probably did more cooking than some would whilst on holiday.

Location is excellent. Off the normal tourist trail, Oldcastle is a charming town with small supermarket, butcher, tourist office, a couple of coffee shops and a handful of other shops (clothing, toys, hardware). And there are several pubs, although, as we had two young children with us, we didn't venture into any of them at night.

There is so much to see and do in the area; here follow a few of our favourites:
Closeby lies Loughcrew Gardens which we thoroughly enjoyed visiting, plus the fascinating and atmospheric Loughcrew Cairns (megalithic cemetery).
The small village of Fore, just across the county border in Westmeath is a hidden treasure, known for the Seven Wonders of Fore. This is an old Christian settlement; you can explore the ruined abbey, church and traces of other buildings. A beautiful, peaceful spot.
Belvedere House and Gardens just outside Mullingar are worth a visit; the gardens are beautiful, and the house has some interesting displays. The cafe rather lets it down; we recommend that if it's a nice day, pack a picnic to enjoy down by the lakeside.
Slightly further away, we visited the Hill of Tara and Trim Castle. Both locations were very popular with our children: the Hill of Tara to run around and let off steam, and Trim Castle was a "proper" castle to explore.

This is such a beautiful area with well-known places within easy reach (including Kells, Newgrange and Knowth), and off-the-beaten-track places to discover (Fore and Loughcrew). Beautiful, unspoilt scenery all around; heaven for walkers and fishing folk.

Our only regret: we should have booked two weeks, not only so that we could enjoy the comfort of Glenboy for longer, but also because there is so much to do in this beautiful area.

Many thanks to Karen and Patrick for their warm hospitality.

It was a really great week for all of us. We appreciated Karen's kindliness.
The house is beautiful and perfect. Oldcastle and its pubs excited us from the very beginning. Ireland and the Irish people impressed us deeply. Its only a question of time when we will return to that great place.

Many thanks to our host!

Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing stay in this lovely cottage in a most beautiful location. I would certainly recommend Glenboy with its facilities and up to date installations. Presentation of the cottage was excellent, with the owners close by to answer any questions.
Only minor downside; watch out for the (lack of) signposting for local sites - tends to be a bit haphazard, and we often had to backtrack to locate places of interest. Rather than directions stating '10kms from', would often say '15 minutes from' - (as with Bective Abbey between Cavan & Trim). Often attractions were not signposted. Unbelievably even the 1000 acre Mullaghmeen forest was difficult to locate with many locals unable to give definite directions. Loughcrew Cairns worth visiting, but sort out obtaining access - on the day of asking the local tourist office were unable to advise!
The Woodbine @ Virginia provided good food combined with friendly & efficient service.

Good value

Facility in very good shape. Everything you need for holiday life was available in right number and good shape. Good value in comparison with prize. Room design and furniture selection done with excellent taste. Bathroom architecture excellent (nice, modern and very useful). To have wireless LAN was very convenient. All devices and technical facilities were working. (Nothing was out of order). Bedclothes and towels were okay. Room of living for 6 people was more than enough. Room layout perfect. Very much appreciated was the light living and eating room.
All in all to feel good in holidays.

Meath Holiday at Glenboy

Superb place. lots of nice touches in the design and furnishing and hosts provide great information for things to see, places to eat etc off the beaten track. If you want a holiday without tourist overkill this is a great location. but also easy to get to busier places. We did 2 day trips to Dublin and to donegal but mostly just explored local places, Loughcrew, Newgrange, and some cavan villages full of character. Would have liked to have caught some of the local community festivals later in the summer - but next time!

mixed weather but dvds and games provided did the trick for the young gang on the one day it really rained!

guest book comments showed we were not alone in our appreciation of the place

A week's holiday in Southern Ireland during May

Good standard of accommodation, plenty of space to chill out. However, for the cost of a week's stay I would have expected to have had more than 2 dishwasher tablets supplied and some washing powders.

Also, the beds were not made up as kingsize as requested in our email sent prior to our holiday which was disputed by the owner. Having checked our email on our return we had stipulated all 4 of us wanted kingsize beds.

Unfortunately it was a long drive each day to get to places of interest but we enjoyed them once we got there and the weather was good on the whole. Recommend a visit to Trim Castle.

Food was expensive in the local supermarkets.
