THE VILLAGE: Monterchi, its name derived from 'MONS HERCULIS' (hill of Hercules) whose cult was celebrated here in ancient Etruscan and Roman periods, is home of the famous Renaissance fresco 'The Madonna del Parto' (The Madonna of Childbirth) The mother of Piero della Francesca, the painter of the fresco, was born in Monterchi and the village became famous when in 1888 the fresco, painted in 1446 and considered one of Piero's finest masterpieces, was uncovered in the chapel of the cemetery. This restored fresco is now well displayed in the old village schoolhouse.

Fantastic Week!

We (two couples, no kids) had a fantastic week in this lovely home. The views are truly breathtaking, and there are so many terraces to enjoy them from. The grounds and pool area are really exceptional. We loved the outdoor kitchen. One night we made rosemary potatoes with rosemary that was growing by the pool, and we enjoyed many omelets with fresh eggs from the chicken coop. Also enjoyed a delightful "pizza lunch" cooked for us by Imperia - DO NOT MISS this wonderful treat if you stay here!

We had a nice balance of relaxing at the house and taking day-trips. The Chianti region and Gubbio in Umbria were close enough by car, and we took the train into Florence from Arezzo. Nearby, the hilltown of Anghiari is lovely.

Podere Borgacciano definitely lived up to our fantasy of a perfect Italian villa vacation! We are happy to recommend it!

What a truly magical stay. The owners couldn't have been more helpful with sorting out details of the property (how to get there, etc) and the property itself was everything and more then we could have hoped for. We were 6 adults and 2 babies and Danny & Janette helped provide their personal items (gate, highchair, and bath) for our babies which was such a help. As well, they provided unlimited information on restaurants and towns to visit in the area.

The property itself is truly magical. You feel like you have your own vacation home in Tuscany/Umbria. This property is unlike any other rental where there is a lush garden with unlimited figs and any fruits that are in season. As well, there is a chicken coup where you can grab fresh laid eggs in the morning. As well, drinking the house wine with the property name every night for dinner...what a treat!

The rest of the property would be enough on it's own with the incredible views but when you consider the pool, it just takes this property to a whole new level. It is truly wonderful and the beauty of the country side is second to none. We spent many an afternoon lying by the pool just soaking in the view. But what makes it even more special is the outdoor kitchen and wood burning oven. We had the privilege to have the caretaker (Imperia & her assistant) make 3 meals for us. Her pizza's, pasta's and dessert are spectacular and her company even better. On a visit to neighbouring Citerna, Imperia meet us and showed us around and took us to her home. She took such great care of us and our babies that she made us feel like we were her family.

The town of Monterchi is small but very quaint and everyone is so friendly. The store keeper at the local grocery store heard we were staying at Lesser's villa and invited us for a glass of his local wine. Such great hospitality! The sounding towns are quaint and not over touristed which makes them a pleasure to walk through on any afternoon you can drag yourself away from the beauty of the property.

We did two tours in the surrounding area which were excellent and if you are into fly fishing (Luca Castellini) or truffles (Tartufi Bianconi - spectacular seven course meal) they were just fabulous and we highly recommend them.

If you are looking looking for a property to rent in Tuscany/Umbria that is off the typical tourist path, look no further. You will never find a better property to rent... it is truly magical. We can't wait to come back!

We are so thrilled that "Podere Borgacciano" was able to provide your Family and Friends the perfect holiday, which exceeded your expectations and we look forward to welcoming you back again.

For us, as fortunate owners of this "Angolo di Paradiso", we are always delighted that so many guests from all over the world share our view of "Podere Borgacciano".

As grandparents, recognising that travelling from abroad with baggage limitations, only the minimum baby equipment can be brought, we continually strive to ensure that all our guests' needs are catered for, to make their holiday as relaxing and comfortable as possible.

Nicole and friends -- here's to the next time !!!

Winter Sun in glorious Tuscan Farmhouse!

Wow! Our expectations were blown away when we finally arrived at Podere Borgacciano.
We (6 adults and 4 young kids) went for the winter half-term break and left a dreary Manchester to arrive mid-afternoon from Pisa after a supermarket shop.
We were so lucky with the weather that we went straight over to the amazing pool complex and cracked open the Prosecco, basking in the glorious Winter sun, while the kids jumped into the pool!
Having chatted to the owners, Danny and Janette, to sort out the deposit and get the info, keys etc, we all had a good vibe about the place even before we arrived. But this time, unlike so many other holiday rentals, the website pictures, do not do the place justice!
The views were incredible, on one side the rolling Apennines into Tuscany, and on the other the Umbrian Tiber Valley! Amazing, especially in the morning when the mist was rising.
We met the housekeeper, Imperia, who was so lovely, and made sure we had everything we needed, and gave us a few great cooking tips!
We and the kids became friendly with the local supermarket owner Marshmello! (Marcello) who has everything. His meats, salamis, sausages and cheeses were excellent. We even got him to vacuum pack some stuff to take home!
The local greengrocer, Papaya, was sensational. We were in the Porcini and Tartufi season, and happily over-indulged! How we now miss the real taste of tomatoes!
The gardener came twice during the week and helped us replenish the wood store for our nightly fires and also our wine stocks! We bought local wines but then sampled the house wine which is a lovely clean Chianti and a fab price too! Thanks Danny!
The house and the rooms all ensuite were clean and comfortable. We also hired the extra studio flat which the kids loved! The rooms are all colour coordinated with bedlinen and towels which is a bit twee but it works.
The kitchen had everything and we really ate well both in and out - some amazing local restaurants. Enoteca Guidi in Sansepulchro especially!
The stereo could be updated but we brought all the right cables to dock our ipods. The Wifi worked well, even up in the hills, and we could stream to the TV.
All in all, we had one of the best holidays! A really comfortable farmhouse in a great location with good walks, food, wine and a chance to relax together.
We'd recommend this place easily and would love to get back at this season and for a summer!
Best Wishes, Leon & Karen Wilkins, family and friends,Tarvin,Cheshire,UK
Owner's Response: Thank you, Leon and Karen, for your praise of "Podere Borgacciano".
We are so delighted that you, your Family and Friends, enjoyed such a good holiday, that you would easily recommend it and plan to return for the 2014 season.
How wonderful that, towards the end of October, the weather was kind enough for all your children to enjoy the pool and for you to "bask in the glorious sun" on the surrounding terraces and gardens, as the south-facing pool complex is always so warm and sheltered - so perfect for a late summer/ autumn and even winter break.
It always gives us so much pleasure to know that others feel as we do about our "Angolo di Paradiso" and that, year after year, we are able to share this beautiful part of the world with so many guests from all over the world.
We certainly look forward to welcoming you and more of your Friends, back again for another memorable visit. Janette and Danny.

La Bella Toscana!

What a fantastic week we shared at Podere Borgacciano in late September! Everywhere we looked, there was another place to sit with our espresso or wine and gaze out over marvelous vistas of cornfields, vineyards, cypress, olive trees, hillstowns, and mountain ranges. The farmhouse villa was lovely - comfortable and beautifully decorated. The pool complex was luxurious, and the weather was still warm enough for some swimming. Don said he "felt like Nero" as he lounged alongside the infinity edge. It was a dream to be able to pick fresh figs for breakfast. We were lucky to arrive on the weekend of Monterchi's annual Polenta Fest, and joined the townspeople for an afternoon of reverly - complete with fungi and tomato sauces, homemade sausages, and plenty of vino rosso. The owners of Monti's Supermarket were so friendly and accommodating, trying to meet our every need as we struggled with our Italian. Many ancient hilltowns are within a short drive, and Sansepolcro was wonderful for shopping and lunch at Ristorante Fiorentino. Don was even able to secure a guide to fly fish for brown trout on the Upper Tiber River - a very successful morning and gorgeous fish. - Our housekeeper Imperia's hospitality is not to be missed! She prepared a delicious several course welcome dinner the first night, and we asked her to return to prepare homemade pizza in the forno one afternoon. After caprese salad, 6 kinds of pizza, and a fruit tart, we all went comatose poolside! It was such fun sipping wine with the Podere Borgacciano label and knowing that olive oil Imperia used came from the groves on the property. Nearby restaurants worth going to include La Veccia Osteria and La Pieve Vecchia. We especially enjoyed walks along the road where the farmhouse is located. A hound dog often joined us as our companion/guard, and we took apples to a friendly donkey nearby. Vineyards lining the road were laden with purple grapes, and the lighting on the landscape changed moment by moment. The old chapel down the street was very picturesque and made for some interesting photographs. We are so happy our good friends Linda and Bill could share the week with us at Podere Borgacciano. Although we wish we could keep this paradise a secret, we cannot help ourselves from showing our album and telling favorite tales of our adventures. Thank you, Janette and Danny, for sharing your special spot. We hope to be able to return someday. - Christy, Don, Linda, and Bill - Massachusetts, USA

We are a family of 6 (adults), stayed at Podere Borgacciano last week of September 2010. Excellent holiday home. The views, especially in the early morning, were breathtaking. The farmhouse was very well appointed; we had everything we needed. The pool complex was awesome - great layout and lovely views. Five stars to Imperia and her cooking. She prepared a dinner for 8 one evening - marvelous! The next day we had her return and prepare pasta and pizzas at the pool. Again, simply fabulous. If you visit, definitely have Imperia prepare at least one meal. You will not regret or forget it! Shop (food) in town or visit Sansepolcro (15 minutes away) for larger stores and better selections. All in all it was a week to cherish and remember forever. We had exciting and high expectations before arriving, and they were exceeded in every respect. Five stars to Podere Borgacciano!

Owner's Response: We are overjoyed that April and Alan had such a wonderful and memorable holiday at our "Angolo di Paradiso" and look forward to welcoming them back!!!

When one reads the many pages of glowing descriptions of Podere Borgacciano in our Guest Book:

"Stunning views"
"Exceeded our expectations"
"Fabulous Pool"
"Never forget Imperia's lunch from the Pizza Forno"

are themes that run through most of our guests comments.

This summer we will spend our 4th holiday at Podere Borgacciano. The villa is in a stunning location - overlooking Tuscany in one direction and Umbria in the other. The villa was lovingly renovated down to the smallest detail. We return as often as we can due to the beauty and peacefulness of the villa; its location; and the hospitality of the owners, Janette and Danny. We are positive that if you stay at Podere Borgacciano you will regard it as one of your best vacations ever!

Podere Borgcciano had great views of the countryside and the village of Monterchi. The property has three floors and was very well maintained and clean. The owners and chef/housekeeper were friendly and helpful.
We went in March / April and did not use the pool but the pool complex was lovely. We wanted to see as much of Umbria and Tuscany as possible so went for a drive everyday . It took a good hour to get to Perugia and a bit more to Assisi. Assisi is a must see. We also went to Florence, Sienna, Gubbio, Cortona, etc - all took longer to get too. The local towns were nice for a visit too - Arezzo, Anghari, Sanspolcro.
I would recommend Podere Borgacciano if you want to stay put and relax by the pool and visit a few places in the local area. Otherwise, if you want to visit lots of towns, villages etc be prepared to do a lot of traveling.
We enjoyed eating at a local pizza place(on road to Arezzo) and restaurant just out of Monterchi heading towards Perugia (sorry forgotten names)recommended by the locals. Drinking coffee at a local bar near the market was also good and they charge the right price! Be prepared to pay 3 or 4 times more in Rome or Florence.
Overall our holiday was great. Umbria is green and there are not as many tourists as Tuscany. My only warning would be is to ask the owners about the heating bill in advance - if you are going in winter. We were shocked with the amount we had to pay. Otherwise, enjoy your stay.
