Great apartment, great location, beautiful view
Lovely apartment directly overlooking the Herengracht canal in the Jordaan. It's a 5 minute walk to an Albert Heijn supermarket and an Orange Bicycle bike rental shop, a 10 minute walk to the heart of Amsterdam, the royal palace, and the red light district, and a 15 minute walk to central station. It's hard to imagine a better, more beautiful location for a vacation in Amsterdam! The apartment was spotless clean, very well appointed (including fresh coffee for the coffee maker!), and very nicely decorated with artwork done by the owner. I would stay there again without hesitation.
There are some things to know, however:
The owners speak only a bit of English, and (since I speak no Dutch or German), we struggled to understand each other a little bit. It wasn't a big problem, and we all laughed as we worked to communicate, but it's something to know about beforehand.
Throughout the whole building, and to a minor extent in the apartment itself, the smell of cigarette (or other) smoke was evident. It was no problem at all for me, but if my girlfriend (who has asthma) had been with me, should probably wouldn't have been able to stay there. But Amsterdam in general might not be a great location for sensitive asthmatics anyway, as there was a fair number of smokers everywhere in the city.
Also, there was no internet in the apartment. Although there were upward of 30 WiFi networks I could detect from the front window, they were all password protected. Martin gave me the password for his WiFi, but I was unable to make it work with iPhone, iPad, or laptop. There was an interesting solution, however: There is a small neighborhood coffee shop in the basement of the building that very nicely allowed me to sit and use their WiFi. You just have to brave the haze of cigarette and dope smoke that fills the room. After sitting in there for about half an hour on a Saturday night, my clothes reeked of smoke after leaving. After that, I sat on the front steps to use the network (unfortunately, their WiFi didn't reach all the way up to the apartment).
Lastly - be wary of the ceiling-mounted television in the living room - I banged my head on that thing at least a dozen times.
All of these items were minor, however, and I mention them only as "heads-up". All told, the stay in the apartment was near-ideal, and I would stay there again in a quick second.
