A Little Disappointed

We, a party of 6 have just returned from 11 nights at Maaya. Immediately the views across the Indian Ocean dominate the 2 main bedrooms.
There was, however, no tv`s in bedrooms, as stated by last reviewer, no fresh flowers, no wifi,no coffee machine, no ice maker, no hair drier, no ironing board, no ,mosquito traps, only nets,no working oven and minimum towels. The third bedroom is well below European standards.
However, once we got used to all the wildlife inside and outside the villa, we loved it!!
Nandhi,Linda and Nihal were marvellous. Nihal, the cook served up whatever we asked for supper. For a set price each night, the 6 of us had many meat and vegetable dishes to sample.Nihal excelled under the cramped conditions. It was amazing, a little throbbing on the lips at times.
Sitting on the wall at the bottom of the garden was just priceless. The odd fisherman plying his trade on the beach, was all we saw, apart from the turtles we saw feeding off the seaweed.
We loved Nandhi and Linda, survivors of the 2004 tsunami, and wanted to bring them home. We shared a tipple or 2 with Nandhi, and my eldest son even bought himself a sarong like Nandhi to wear at the local disco.(He`s 27 !!)
2 tuk tuks were on hand everyday offering tours and general transport.
We had lovely days whale watching with the Sri Lankan Navy, trips to Yala National park, Kogalla lake, Mirissa and the local turtle hatchery. Everywhere we went there were wide beaming smiles.
Maaya villa and the people who run it, touched us deeply, and will always be in our hearts.

A wonderful week to relax & recharge

A wonderful week to relax & recharge

We spent a wonderful week relaxing at Maaya after travelling around Sri Lanka for 12 days.

The property is beautifully maintained - fresh flowers in the rooms, very designery (lots of wood/LED lighting), eco-friendly (solar power) and there are flat screen TVs with DVD players in both bedrooms. There's a computer & a wide selection of DVDs so our kids were happy to have somewhere to escape the sun and chill out. The bedrooms are identical & both have bathrooms (exactly the same as the pictures online).

The cook is great and very helpful (he seemed bemused when we tried to cook some pasta & instantly wanted to do it for us) and the housekeeper immediately put out cushions on the sun loungers when we used the pool, which by the way is clean & warm.

The ocean is so close and breeze is warm & salty. There are lots of towels & the four poster beds have good mattresses. There are mosquito traps in the rooms & there really is an ice maker that makes ice in 3 different sizes!

If you don't want to eat in every night, Unawatuna is a short tuk-tuk ride (£2.50/$4.00) away and a new Bistro & Beach Club has opened literally next door. Prices there are higher than elsewhere in Sri Lanka, but the food/cocktails provide an alternative to standard rice & curry fare for a special night out. When you do choose to eat in, the cook provides excellent meals. And no washing up to do!

For day trips, I recommend a tuk-tuk to Galle (£5/$8), and if you're here November to April then Mirissa is THE place to see Blue Whale.

I understand that the owner will be remodelling parts of the villa shortly to create more space. We hope to return!

Owner's Response: It is nice to hear nice things about the villa.

From the next month we will have 4 rooms while maintaining the exclusive nature if you wish to. The use of the extra rooms will cost only a small amount more

The Dolphin watch/whales would start in November and the best/safest would be to take the Navy craft from Galle much closer to the villa.

Sri Lanka Airlines now has a flight from Colombo to Koggala (only 3-4 Kms away from the villa)

The new Southern Highway will be open in a few weeks and the time taken to drive will be much less.

Beautiful Maaya - a perfect spot in paradise

Our stay at villa Maaya, was a perfect and very relaxing getaway in a beautiful location. The beachfront villa gives unrivalled and stunning views of the Indian Ocean, and we and our children spent many hours 'turtle watching' as they came to feed in the coral reef. A little further along the beach you can see the stilt fishermen at work on their perches. The sea was a little too rough for swimming during our stay, but this did not detract from our fun - the pool is fabulous and very clean, with a jacuzzi seat at one end. Great idea! The rooms and bathrooms were very clean and comfortable - and we were very glad of the A/C units at night. We ate mostly at the villa - enjoying Saman's wonderful cooking everyday - Sri Lankan specialities, but also western style food, delicious seafood, curried crab, huge prawns, and mouthwatering curries. One of our party was vegetarian and certainly enjoyed many local veggie dishes.
The villa was an ideal base to explore from, we visited Galle Fort, the stunning Kogalla Lake and its temple, local spice gardens and the backpacker haven of Unawatuna.
Having not visited Sri Lanka before we did not know what to expect, but Maaya and its wonderful staff, made our holiday very special indeed and we cannot wait to return to this beautiful paradise Isle and its lovely smiling people.

Simple but almost heaven

Maaya is simple but very particular and different from all villas in the neighbourhood.
Located on one of the most beatiful beaches of South coast and near Galle and Unawatuna where you find everything you can need.

From the terrace you can see turtles entering the coral reef.

Mr Jayantha Silva, who comes every morning to prepare breakfast, is a special presence and of great help. We suggest to ask him to prepare dinner. Rice and curry were great.

Massage service is perfect.

Maaya is highly recommended for a holiday in a wonderful and romantic atmosphere...almost in heaven.

Date of stay: 2nd of Aug (2nights)

It was really fantastic place to have full rest.
This villa is just faced blue indian ocean(20meter) and view is really open and wide.
In bed and balcony you can enjoy the beautiful scenery all days.
Villa itself built by wood and all buildings used eco friendly materials.
Inside villa, there are swimming pool and it is perfect place for one or two families.

And during your stay, Mr.Silva will help for your cooking and local tour arrangement.
Especially, I suggest you to have sea food barbaque cooked by Mr.Silva.(You can buy fresh fish with Mr.Silva at the local fish market)

I hope to visit there again in the near future with my family and friends.

Paradise in the Paradise

The paradise Island of Srilanka has another small paradise in the south coast by the name of Maya. We had the fortune to stay in the two bed roomed villa for one night during our visit to Srilanka. This most beautiful villa with its own private swimming pool backs onto the blue Indian ocean with. It has a full time chef who will provide you with excellent freshly prepared local fruit drinks. This is an ideal location for couples who want to have private time away from the hustle and bustle of busy tourist trap hotels. You can watch turtles from your bed room
jostling in the rock pool of the sea near the villa. The chef can cook local as well as western cuisines from fresh produce bought daily from the local markets. It's fun to go to the market with him to buy your own choice of ingredients for your evening meal. We found it value for money."

A week in paradise

Submitted: November 8, 2010 Stayed: September 2010
If you want to enjoy your own corner of paradise and in your own time this is the place for you.

The setting adjacent to a coral reef allows sea bathing all the year round (which is difficult on most parts of this coast). There is a pool too if you prefer that. The food and menu you can choose yourself with the excellent chef-Silva. it is fun to select your food in Galle market with him. The accommodation is clean, unique in design (to a high standard) and eco friendly, being solar powered. There are opportunities to fish, swim and dive with a boat available on the premises. The turtles also use the pools inside the coral reef to feed and we were able to see 5 most days.

I would strongly recommend a visit here for anyone wishing to enjoy an Indian Ocean holiday but wants something different and special.
