A lovely apartment
We returned home yesterday after a lovely 1 week stay in this apartment. There were 4 adults in our group. I agree with everything the previous reviewers have written on this site - the apartment is exactly as described and the photos provide a true impression of what it's like.
Before we arrived, we weren't sure exactly where on the Val d'Ajuda, the apartment was situated - but if you look on a map, it is more or less behind the 'Melia Madeira Mare' hotel, and the photo taken from the apartment balcony is the 'Enotel' (previously known as Tivoli).
Cath arranged transport to & from the airport, met us at the apartment upon our arrival, and provided a really nice welcome pack (fruit, wine, bread, water, cheese, ham, eggs, butter) - which was greatly appreciated.
The apartment was very clean, well maintained and well equipped with a variety of kitchen utensils, plates, plenty glasses etc. We enjoyed the space of the apartment - especially with 2 bathrooms - and we sat in the sun on the balcony - even in January!
The apartment is well located for buses - just a few mins walk to the bus stop to and from Funchal town. The wine shop next to the Yacht Club sells bus tickets - & the staff there are helpful if you need a bit of advice on bus travel.
We visited the local coffee shop (called Ravioli) several times and we loved it too.
Try the 'jeep' tours if you like the scenery - you get to see some amazing views of the island.
We went on the 'Santa Maria' boat trip (30 euros pp for 3 hours) and we saw lots of dolphins - amazing!!
The 'Forum' shopping centre is an easy 10 mins walk - and close by is a restaurant called 'Rubi' - someone recommended it to us - at first sight it looked more like a cafe than a restaurant, but the food was fabulous, cheaper than most tourist restaurants, big portions, delicious, and the wine's well priced too!
We also ate at a local restaurant called 'O Dragoiero', we sat in the garden in a January evening (lovely!) and had a 3 course set menu for 23 euros - good food - and there were several other restaurants to choose from too - all looked good.
We also liked 'Petiscos' restaurant near the Melia Madeira Mare, we liked 'O Fort' in the old town, 'Real Canoe' near the Grand Hotel - in fact everywhere was good!!
Try the 'passion fruit pudding' - we chose this nearly every time - it is different in every restaurant - but always delicious.
There are a couple of good supermarkets within walking distance too.
A lovely place
