This is the second summer that Carroll Farm Cottage is on the rental market. The 3000 sq ft house is in an excellent location - tucked in the woods on 12 acres of land that abuts Acadia National Park and the historic Carroll Farm Homestead. Very private setting ( deer siting are not uncommon here) but easily accessible to town, the harbor and many great hikes.
The house is only one mile outside of town and close to many trails and attractions. It is a 5 minute trail walk to the historic Carroll Farm Homestead (part of Acadia). The old Doll trail is walking access to Fernald point road which is where the Causeway golf course is located as well as the trailheads for Flying Mountain and Valley Peak. Flying Mountain is a family friendly hike with breathtaking views of the islands. Valley Cove is a stunning, cliff-lined cove, accessible down a stroller friendly fire road. Town can be reached either by a peaceful 2.5 mile walk over the mill dam, with gorgeous views of the harbor or a quick 1 mile drive down the main road. The town of Southwest Harbor has shops, restaurants, a playground and of course the harbor, where there are numerous tour boat and sailing opportunities. The grocery store is .5 miles away and the ‘Top of the Hill Restaurant’ is at the head of the road as is the Island Explorer bus stop (a 2 minute walk).
The house itself is a 3 bedroom,2 ½ baths with a good sized yard, two porches, and a swing set. Upstairs has two bedrooms, each with a skylight and big window looking out into the woods. One has two twin beds and the other has a full sized bed. Upstairs there is also a full bath with skylight and tub and shower. Also upstairs is a study/sitting area with desk and bookshelves.
Downstairs is a large master bedroom with a private outside access door, a queen size bed and private full bathroom with a shower. There is a living room with a baby grand piano, a dining room (seats 6-8) and game/tv area. Also downstairs is a half bathroom with stacked washer and dryer. The fully equipped kitchen has a breakfast nook that seats 4. The kitchen has all the usual appliances plus a microwave, coffee pot, toaster, food processor, blender and a grill on the porch attached to the kitchen.
The house has satellite TV, wireless internet, DVD player, stereo system, games, books, toys and more. There is a yard and swing set and fire ring for toasting marshmellows and singing songs.
The Island Explorer bus stops at the head of the road.
This is the second time it is on the market as a rental property.
We started building Carroll Farm Cottage together, by hand, just before our eldest child was born. It started with Sig cutting the trees down to make the long driveway and the building site. He cut tree by tree with his chain saw, limbed each one and stacked the logs in a pile. At the time I was going to graduate school an hour away and each day I would come home to see that he would be a little farther along. Next a portable saw mill was used to mill the logs into rough cut lumber, it was this wood that we used to build the original house.
By the time we were ready to put on the roof trusses, our son, Axel, was born. Progress slowed but he quickly became a good helper and would sit and play with us outside while we attempted to work. And Slowly, very slowly we finished the house. :)
Thanksgiving 2006 we finally moved into our home with our 3 year old son and not yet one year old daughter. We love living here, surrounded by woods and privacy but close to the wonderful town of Southwest Harbor. Two years ago we put an addition on the house so that Sig could have a home office for his engineering design work and we would have an extra room for one of our parents if need be.
In addition to working as a hardware design engineer, Sig plays in a local band and has his boat captains license. Anna is also an engineer and teaches physics and sustainable energy at the local college. Axel is 9 and Janey is 6 and both love to play in the woods, walk to the Carroll Homestead, hike, build forts and sail.
We fell in love with this land because of its natural beauty, the peacefulness here, its great location and rich history. It was once owned by a descendant of the Carroll family, for whom our 14 year old golden retriever is named after. The Carroll family lived in the Carroll Farm Homestead in the 1800's. It is now part of Acadia National Park and opened to the public in the summer to learn about that part of island history.
Carroll Farm Cottage is in an excellent location tucked in the woods on 12 acres of land that abuts Acadia National Park and the Carroll Farm Homestead. From our house, it is just a short walk through the woods to the Carroll Farm Homestead. Although it is in a very private setting, the house is easily accessible to town, the harbor and many great hikes. A walk down the dole trail puts you on on Fernald Point Road which has the Causeway Golf Course on one end and the trail heads for Flying Mountain and Valley Cove on the other. Flying Mountain is a family friendly hike with breathtaking views of the islands. Valley Cove is a stunning, cliff lined cove, accessible down a bike and stroller friendly fire road.
Carroll Farm Cottage is located on Carroll Hill Road. At the head of the road is an Island Explorer bus stop as well as 'Top of the Hill' Restaurant. It is a 2.5 mile peaceful walk into town down the dole trail and over the mill dam, with gorgeous views of the harbor or a short 1 mile drive down the main road. The town of Southwest Harbor has shops, restaurants, a playground and of course the harbor, where there are numerous tour boat and sailing opportunities.
Kids love playing in the woods, building fairy houses and forts. It is paradise for dogs who like to run.
Star Gazing and listening to the many sounds of the woods while sitting on the porch is just about as relaxing as you can get.
