Playa Palo Seco House Rental Photos and Description
Two level, 4 bedroom beach house, on 1/2 acre lot with private pool

The house is fronted by a large teak balcony featuring two hammocks + 4 person dining table - this is the signature location of the house with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. The main living area of the house is located on the upper level; at this level the ocean-view presents itself from all points in the open-concept kitchen, dining and living room areas. Vaulted ceilings, teak beams and numerous windows enhance this area with abundant light and air. The kitchen is well equipped with coffee maker, toaster, pots & pans, cutlery, dishes, glasses, electric stove and fridge. For indoor dining a lunch bar separates the kitchen and living room - there are 6 bar-height, teak chairs. Behind the house is the private pool and rancho with charcoal bar-b-que; a bar in the rancho offers an outside dining option near the pool.

The yard features a huge mango tree, two almond trees, numerous palms and other tropical plants.

Beach, Ocean and Weather are the main attractions at Isla Palo Seco; they are spectacular! Isla Palo Seco is a barrier island, essentially a sand spit, that extends 8 km in length. The sand beach extends the entire length of the Island on the ocean-facing side; approximately 8 km of palm-lined, pristine beach. The ocean water is warm, surprisingly warm. Waves are constant; they are a surfer/boogie boarder's dream. At Dos Gatos we have 3 surf boards (2 long boards and 1 short board) and 2 boogie boards for our guests to use. At high or low tide the beach is breathtaking but if you want to walk the beach low tide is best. At low tide the ocean recedes to uncover a flat, sand strip that extends for more than half of the 100 or so metres between the water and the beach grass and palms. This flat sand is firm and a pleasure to walk. The beach is never crowded with people. Except for weekends and holidays when Tico (Costa Rican) families gather at the beach, it is almost deserted. I once walked the entire length of the Island and encountered only 3 people! The estero located on the back side of the island is extensive and it known for its fishing and sight seeing.

The weather between December 1 and May 1 (summer) is predictable; except for the occasional rainfall in the evening or night - average daytime high temp is 33 c under clear skies and average nighttime lows are 21 c. Even in the green season there is sun on most days from early morning to early afternoon when the clouds roll in with late afternoon showers - the average temps vary only slightly. For more details on climate see www.weather2travel.com/jaco costa rica.

There are several very good restaurants on the beach: 'La Macha 2' is a bar with relaxed atmosphere and good food, 'Beso Del Viento' offers French quesine by reservation, 'Hotel La Isla' has an extensive menu and the newest resort on the Island 'Clandestino Resort' offers more upscale dining at reasonable prices.

We are a Brady Bunch type family - we have 6 adult children between us and 7 grandchildren - this is our family vacation home! The house was designed to accommodate large groups - if the group is larger than this house can accommodate there are nearby over-flow options.

Peter Downing purchased this house in 2012

We were initially attracted to the tropics by the beaches, palm trees and warm breezes. We chose Costa Rica for our vacation home because of its stable government and relative safety - we were attracted to La Isla Palo Seco in particular because of the pristine quiet beach. This is not the place to go for the night life - but if you are looking for a tropical paradise this fits the bill - the house is big enough for family vacations or groups who wish to vacation together with private pool and an essentially private beach! Sunset watching is very popular here - sunsets are different every day and they can be quite spectacular. As you end your day on the balcony (perhaps with a favorite beverage) you will be serenaded by the sounds of the ocean, the breeze in the palms and the cheeping of the gheckos - enjoy.

Our first trip to Costa Rica was in 2013. We had stayed at 5 different B&B's along the way and ended our vacation at Villa Dos Gatos. We loved it so much we returned again this year and rented the home for the entire week. We shared our excitement about our stay with the family, they accompanied us this year and were not disappointed. We were with a party of five and they felt the same as we did. The home is so inviting and the atmosphere is very relaxing. Each morning we had breakfast on the balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean watching the Pelicans surf the waves for fish. Since the home offers the use of surf boards, we had to try it! Each morning we walked along the beach and we may have seen 5 people, it is so private. We spent many hours in the pool and swam in the ocean which was surprisingly very warm and each evening we watched the unbelievable sunsets. We had done most of the cooking at the home, and being so close to the town of Parrita, it made buying groceries very easy, had a good selection of food and a market with fresh fruit. You also have the option of dinning out and have a good selection of local restaurants to choose from. We had the experience of eating at two of the local restaurants and the food was very good. We enjoyed two excursions during our stay. The prices were very reasonable and no concerns with finding the locations. Our hosts had provided a welcome binder which has all the information you need about the home, restaurants, day trips. I have had the opportunity to travel over the years and stay at many different locations. I would have to say Villa Dos Gatos is at the top of my list. You would not be disappointed in renting this home!

We had a very pleasant stay at Villa Dos Gatos. The location is perfect, the house is very well furnished and comfortable, the deck is fantastic. We were 4 adults, 4 teens and we had plenty of room for everybody. I recommand this house to everybody who wants to relax in a great spot as well as visiting the central part of the Pacific coast.

Executive Summary: Can’t beat this house for proximity to what is basically a large private beach – literally 30 seconds from the front door to the water. Owners, Peter and Stephanie, are great to work with – responded quickly and were patient with our newbie questions.

A little more info: Six adults plus our 9-year old were quite comfortable in Villa Dos Gatos. We loved the pool, the bbq grill, the balcony, the hammocks, and the fresh mangos. We spent 2 of our 6 days in Costa Rica just hanging out at the house reading, swimming (pool and ocean), and walking on the beach. We might’ve seen 15 people on the beach during our 5 days there, and 13 of those were on Sunday – this is definitely a “local” beach. Of course, everything in the house worked and it was clean. The tap water was safe to drink even for us soft Americans.

Note that Villa Dos Gatos is quite remote and the last few miles of road leading to the house are pretty rough and frustrating to negotiate, so plan your outings efficiently – you probably won’t want to be driving back and forth multiple times per day. There are 2 good restaurants on the same road as the house - just a few minutes drive away.

One last note: Bring 1 large can of bug spray and 1 large can of sun screen for each member of your group for each week you’ll be in Costa Rica. We ran out and had to buy Off! for $10/can. Obviously that’s a tropical country situation unrelated to Villa Dos Gatos.
Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments Ken - the stretch of road from Parrita is an definitely an adventure to navigate (we are told that the fix will happen soon -- we'll see) - slow is the only way to travel it - especially in a small car which is what we drive - sorry for the bug situation but ordinarily they are an issue for 1 - 1 1/2 hr at dawn and dusk - bug spray is effective and advised - we use it too and we also bring it with us to avoid the expensive option in CR --- Peter
